Jakarta to Yogyakarta by train, plane, bus or car: KAI trains from Gambir and Pasar Senen, CGK–YIA flights, the YIA airport train and a door-to-door table.
Key takeaways
- Take the train unless time is very tight. Executive trains from Gambir reach Yogyakarta station, near Malioboro, in about six hours with no airport transfers.
- From Gambir, Executive trains include the Taksaka, Argo Dwipangga, Argo Lawu, Argo Semeru, Bima, Gajayana and Manahan, taking six to seven hours.
- Use Gambir for Executive, Luxury and Compartment trains and Pasar Senen for cheaper mixed and Economy trains.
- Only a little, and only from the right airport.
- Take the KA Bandara YIA train from the airport station to Yogyakarta station: the non-stop Xpress takes about 35 minutes, and the Reguler stops at Wates.
What is the best way to get from Jakarta to Yogyakarta?
Link to this answerTake the train unless time is very tight. Executive trains from Gambir reach Yogyakarta station, near Malioboro, in about six hours with no airport transfers. Flying from Soekarno–Hatta to YIA is quicker door to door, roughly four and a half to five and a half hours, but involves more handovers. Buses and driving are slower.
The table adds up each stage from a central Jakarta start to central Yogyakarta, using KAI’s booking site, live airline schedules and operators’ own information checked on 16 October 2026. The main-leg times are sourced; the totals add our stated allowances for reaching the departure point and for buffers, so adjust them for your hotel and luggage.
The train wins for most visitors because it starts and ends in city centres. Gambir (Open in Google Maps) is a short ride from central Jakarta hotels, and Yogyakarta station (Open in Google Maps) is near Malioboro, so the six-hour ride is most of the journey. A flight saves an hour or two only if you start near Soekarno–Hatta or are connecting from an international arrival, because YIA is in Kulon Progo regency, west of the city, and needs its own train.
Buses and cars suit specific needs: a bus if trains are sold out or you want an overnight seat, a car with driver if you are a group stopping at Borobudur on the way. Plan the city end with our Yogyakarta guide and the start with the Jakarta guide.

Which trains run from Jakarta to Yogyakarta?
Link to this answerFrom Gambir, Executive trains include the Taksaka, Argo Dwipangga, Argo Lawu, Argo Semeru, Bima, Gajayana and Manahan, taking six to seven hours. From Pasar Senen, mixed Executive and Economy trains such as the Fajar Utama, Senja Utama, Bogowonto and Mataram take seven to eight. Search KAI for your date.
We searched booking.kai.id on 16 October 2026 for Tuesday 10 November. Gambir had ten departures to Yogyakarta between 06:20 and 22:50, all Executive, several with Luxury or Compartment cars attached. Pasar Senen had trains to Yogyakarta station from 05:40 to 21:40 and to Lempuyangan from 07:55 to 23:20, many carrying both Executive and Economy cars.
Fares on that date started at Rp670,000 in Executive from Gambir, Rp950,000 in the Luxury cars of the Taksaka, Argo Dwipangga and Argo Lawu, and about Rp1.7 million for Compartment cars on the Argo Semeru and Bima. From Pasar Senen, Economy started at Rp330,000 on the overnight Progo, and the subsidised Bengawan was Rp74,000 for a daytime run of just over eight hours to Lempuyangan. Fares rise as cheaper sub-classes sell out.
Overnight trains save a hotel night but arrive at awkward hours: the Argo Lawu reached Yogyakarta at 02:47 and the night Taksaka at 03:30. A morning departure from Gambir arrives by mid-afternoon, leaving daylight for check-in and Malioboro. Read our Indonesia train guide for passport, luggage and boarding rules before you buy.

Gambir or Pasar Senen, and Yogyakarta or Lempuyangan: which stations should you use?
Link to this answerUse Gambir for Executive, Luxury and Compartment trains and Pasar Senen for cheaper mixed and Economy trains. In Yogyakarta, the main station, also called Tugu, is closest to Malioboro and is where the airport train starts; Lempuyangan, a little east, handles many Economy arrivals. Match the station on your ticket.
Gambir is in central Jakarta beside the National Monument, and on our search every Gambir–Yogyakarta train was Executive or above. Pasar Senen, also in Central Jakarta, served the Fajar Utama, Senja Utama, Bogowonto and Mataram as well as Economy-only evening and overnight trains such as the Jayakarta and Progo. A booking that says only “Jakarta” on an agent site can mean either station, so read the station name.
At the Yogyakarta end, the main station is Yogyakarta, often called Tugu. It is the city terminus of the YIA airport train and an easy walk or short ride from Malioboro. Lempuyangan lies east of the main station; many Pasar Senen Economy trains, including the Progo, Jayakarta and Bengawan, end or stop there. Some trains continue to Solo or Surabaya, so set an alarm on night trains.
Book the hotel once you know the arrival station and time. A 03:30 arrival suits a hotel that confirms early check-in or lets you leave bags; otherwise you will be waiting in the station. Save these map links before you travel so a driver can find the right entrance.

Is it faster to fly from Jakarta to Yogyakarta?
Link to this answerOnly a little, and only from the right airport. Garuda, Citilink, Batik Air, Super Air Jet and TransNusa fly Soekarno–Hatta to YIA in about 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20. From Halim, Citilink turboprops fly to Adisutjipto, the older airport near the city; we found no Halim–YIA flights.
FlightAware’s live listings on 16 October 2026 showed CGK–YIA flights by Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, Batik Air, Super Air Jet and TransNusa, with scheduled times of 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. The same tool showed no Halim–YIA flights, which fits Batik Air’s move of all its Halim–YIA flights to Soekarno–Hatta from 1 August 2025 (Kontan).
Halim still has a Yogyakarta option: Citilink ATR flights to Adisutjipto (JOG), scheduled at about 1 hour 25 minutes (HLP–JOG). Adisutjipto (Open in Google Maps) sits on the eastern edge of the city, whereas YIA (Open in Google Maps) is in Kulon Progo to the west, so the airport you land at changes the last leg completely.
Before choosing a flight, add the airport legs. KAI Commuter advised passengers to be at their departure station at least two hours before a domestic flight (Antara, 31 October 2024), and at YIA you still need the 35-minute Xpress train or a road transfer. Flying wins if you are already at Soekarno–Hatta, connecting from abroad, or travelling at Lebaran when trains sell out. Compare checked-bag allowances, which differ by airline and fare.
Compare the departure airport (CGK or HLP), the arrival airport (YIA or JOG), checked-bag allowance and change rules alongside the fare. Add the airport train or taxi at both ends before deciding a flight beats a six-hour train.

How do you get from Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) to the city?
Link to this answerTake the KA Bandara YIA train from the airport station to Yogyakarta station: the non-stop Xpress takes about 35 minutes, and the Reguler stops at Wates. Railink quoted fares from Rp20,000 Reguler and Rp50,000 Xpress in August 2026. The last train left YIA at 21:30, so late arrivals need a road transfer.
PT Railink (KAI Bandara) told RRI on 1 August 2026 that its timetable and fares changed from 1 July 2026: trains leave Yogyakarta station from 04:20 to 20:12 and YIA from 05:16 to 21:30. It quoted Reguler fares of Rp20,000 to or from YIA, Xpress from Rp50,000, and Xpress Flexi from Rp80,000 including VIP lounge access. Tickets are sold in Access by KAI, the KA Bandara app and on reservation.railink.co.id.
The Xpress skips Wates and took 35 minutes at its April 2023 launch (Kompas TV, 7 April 2023); the Reguler is cheaper and slower. Either way you arrive at Yogyakarta station, near Malioboro, so most central hotels are a short taxi or ride-hail away. DAMRI also runs airport buses; check its route directory for the stop nearest your hotel.
For a late flight, book an airport taxi or hotel transfer in advance and confirm the pick-up point. The FCDO advises using registered taxi companies such as Bluebird, Silverbird or Express and checking the driver’s identity (gov.uk). If you fly into Adisutjipto from Halim instead, you are already on the city’s edge and a taxi is the simple option.

Is there a bus from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, and is it worth it?
Link to this answerYes. DAMRI runs Jakarta–Yogyakarta coaches over the Trans-Java toll road from Kemayoran, Ciputat and Pulo Gebang, and Cititrans Busline links Jakarta with Yogyakarta via Semarang, Solo and Klaten. Expect a long day or a full night on board. Coaches suit sold-out trains, overnight travel or tight budgets, not visitors short of time.
DAMRI launched its Jakarta–Yogyakarta service with departures from Stasiun DAMRI Kemayoran, Stasiun DAMRI Ciputat and Terminal Pulo Gebang to Stasiun DAMRI Yogyakarta, stopping at Semarang, Salatiga, Solo, Boyolali and Klaten, and announced fares from Rp225,000 (Kontan, 5 September 2025). Book on damri.co.id or the DAMRI app, and check the current timetable in its route directory.
Cititrans, which says it is backed by Bluebird group service standards, runs a premium Busline on Tangerang–Jakarta–Semarang–Solo–Klaten–Yogyakarta with Suites and Super Executive seats, according to its Busline page. Several other long-distance coach companies sell through terminals and online agents. One executive coach we saw listed on 16 October 2026 was timed at 12 hours 50 minutes, roughly double the fastest train.
A coach makes sense if trains are sold out at Lebaran, if you want to sleep through the trip on a reclining seat, or if your Jakarta base is far from Gambir and Pasar Senen but near a DAMRI or Cititrans pick-up point. Read recent reviews of the specific operator before booking through an agent, and expect toll-road traffic to stretch schedules at weekends and holidays.

Should you drive yourself from Jakarta to Yogyakarta?
Link to this answerMost visitors should not. The Trans-Java toll route is about 568 km and takes seven to eight hours in normal traffic, and the UK government warns that a UK driving licence alone is not valid in Indonesia. If you want road flexibility, hire a car with a driver and plan rest breaks.
Fortune IDN’s breakdown puts the toll route at about 568 km, running Jakarta–Cikampek, Cikampek–Palimanan, the Semarang sections and Semarang–Solo before the Solo–Yogyakarta toll, with seven to eight hours of driving depending on traffic, speed and rest stops (Fortune IDN, 25 March 2026). Tolls on that route add up to several hundred thousand rupiah each way for a car; check the current tariff before you go.
The FCDO says you cannot drive in Indonesia on a UK licence alone and need a UK-issued International Driving Permit. It describes traffic discipline as very poor and suggests considering a private driver, because foreigners involved in minor incidents may face extortion. Visitors from other countries should check their own government’s advice.
A car with driver makes sense for a group that wants to stop at Borobudur or Semarang on the way, or for a family with a lot of luggage. Agree the total price, tolls, fuel, the driver’s meals and any overnight costs in writing, and avoid the days around Lebaran, when police and toll operators use contraflow and one-way schemes on the main toll roads.
How far ahead should you book Jakarta–Yogyakarta tickets, and what should you check?
Link to this answerBook as soon as KAI’s 45-day window opens for Fridays, Sundays and holidays. For an ordinary Monday, our search three days ahead still found seats on every Gambir train except one Luxury car. Check station names, sub-class fare and passport details, and compare any agent’s total with booking.kai.id before paying.
KAI opens long-distance sales 45 days before departure (FAQ). For Lebaran 2027, Idul Fitri falls on 10–11 March, with collective leave on 9, 12 and 15 March (Setneg), so early-March trains go on sale in mid to late January; our Indonesia train guide lists the dates. Christmas, New Year and long weekends are busy too.
Before paying, check that the departure station is the one you meant (Gambir or Pasar Senen), whether the train ends at Yogyakarta or Lempuyangan, and that each passenger’s name and passport number match exactly, because KAI cannot correct names after booking. On 16 October 2026 the same Executive seat on the Manahan was Rp600,000 on booking.kai.id and IDR 699,426 on 12Go for Monday 19 October.
For coaches, check the pick-up point, luggage allowance and refund rules; for flights, the arrival airport (YIA or Adisutjipto) and bags. Keep your e-ticket available offline, and leave slack before fixed plans such as a Borobudur sunrise tour.
12Go lists KAI trains from Gambir and Pasar Senen as well as long-distance coaches. Compare its total with the same train and sub-class on booking.kai.id (about 16% higher in our 16 October 2026 check), and confirm the boarding station, arrival station and passport details before paying.
