How to do the Mount Batur sunrise trek
Plan a guided pre-dawn climb of Mount Batur in Bali, from checking the alert level to the hot springs afterwards.
- Check MAGMA Indonesia for Batur’s alert level and exclusion zone a few days before, then again the evening before.
- Book a tour or agency trek that includes a PPPGB association guide, and get the inclusions and pick-up time in writing.
- Pack grippy shoes, a warm layer, a head torch, at least a litre of water, cash and a charged phone.
- Meet your guide at the trailhead before dawn and climb at your own pace on the path, roughly one to two hours to the top.
- Watch sunrise from the summit area, stay back from crater edges and take care on the loose descent.
- Finish with a soak at the Toya Bungkah hot springs, or rest before the drive back.
What is the Mount Batur sunrise trek, and how hard is it?
Link to this answerIt is a short but steep pre-dawn climb up a 1,717-metre active volcano in Bali’s Kintamani highlands, timed for sunrise over Lake Batur. Most reasonably fit adults manage it: detikBali puts the normal ascent at one to two hours from a start around 04:00, on loose sand and rock.
Batur sits inside a large caldera in the Kintamani district of Bangli Regency, north-east Bali, and the caldera joined UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network in 2012, according to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The summit is 1,717 metres above sea level. detikBali’s June 2025 trek report gives a start around 04:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA) and a normal ascent of about one to two hours, on a trail dominated by sand and rock that makes the descent heavy going.
That makes Batur a realistic first volcano for most walkers with basic fitness, including older children used to hiking, but it is not a stroll. The upper section is steep and loose, most of the ascent is in the dark, and in busy months you share the path with many other groups. Walking poles help on the way down if you have weak knees. Tour listings we checked in October 2026 run roughly eight to 12 hours door to door, because of the night-time drive.
Sunrise is not guaranteed. detikBali’s group reached the top at about 06:26 and saw cloud roll in soon after sunrise. A cloudy summit is still a good walk, but set your expectations before paying extra for a “premium” sunrise package.
| Fact | Detail (checked October 2026) |

Do you need a guide to climb Mount Batur?
Link to this answerIn practice, yes. We found no national or provincial law requiring one, but the local trekking guides’ association, PPPGB, controls guided ascents, and guidebooks describe it as holding a monopoly on guided climbs. Book a tour that includes a PPPGB guide, or arrange one through an agency in the Toya Bungkah area.
The association is known as PPPGB (formerly HPPGB). Lonely Planet’s French guide says it holds the monopoly on guided ascents and advises dealing with a trekking agency rather than directly with the association. It also notes that some climbers say they have gone up without a PPPGB guide, but advises against climbing at night that way because of the risk of falls. Tour companies normally build the association guide into their price; ask your operator to confirm this in writing, because a driver or the operator’s own “guide” is not the same thing.
There is a political backdrop. In 2023 Bali’s governor, Wayan Koster, proposed banning tourist climbs on the island’s mountains after a run of bad behaviour. The tourism minister said the plan still needed local parliamentary approval, and Euronews reported in July 2023 that a trekking operator had seen no change on the ground. Sunrise treks have continued since. Batur is sacred to Balinese Hindus, with temples around the caldera, so dress and behave respectfully.
Trail charges are where confusion starts. Reports of the official fee conflict, and Lonely Planet’s published prices are undated, so we do not quote one. Before you pay, ask for a written breakdown: association guide fee, any village or regency entry charge, transport, breakfast and whether hot-spring entry is included. Pay any trail charge at an official counter and keep the receipt.
How do you check Mount Batur’s volcano alert level before you go?
Link to this answerCheck MAGMA Indonesia, run by the national volcanology agency PVMBG, on the day before and the morning of your trek. Indonesia uses four levels, from I (Normal) to IV (Awas). A GoodStats round-up of MAGMA data for 8 September 2026 did not list Batur at Level II or above; levels can change quickly.
MAGMA Indonesia is the official source, published by PVMBG (Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi) under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. It is in Bahasa Indonesia, but the level table is easy to read: Level I (Normal), Level II (Waspada, advisory), Level III (Siaga, watch) and Level IV (Awas, warning). Each volcano report also gives the recommended exclusion zone. The UK FCDO points travellers to MAGMA for daily status and warns that exclusion zones can change at short notice.
The most recent level summary we could find when checking was GoodStats’ round-up of MAGMA data for 8 September 2026, which listed 18 volcanoes at Level II and five at Level III. Batur was not among them; Rinjani, on Lombok, was at Level II. That is a snapshot, not a forecast. If Batur’s level rises, authorities can close the summit or widen the exclusion zone, and a reputable operator will cancel or change the route. Take that seriously rather than looking for someone willing to go anyway.
UK advice changed recently. On 18 September 2026 the FCDO’s Indonesia page said it no longer advises against all travel to volcanoes in Indonesia and instead tells travellers to follow local authorities’ exclusion zones. That puts MAGMA and local instructions, rather than a blanket UK warning, at the centre of your decision.
What should you wear and bring for the Batur sunrise trek?
Link to this answerWear shoes with real grip, not sandals, and bring a warm layer: it is cold and often windy on the summit before dawn, then hot once the sun is up. Carry a head torch, water, a light rain jacket, some cash and a charged phone. Many tours include a torch and breakfast; confirm before you go.
The trail is loose volcanic sand and rock, so trainers with a deep tread or light walking boots work better than smooth soles. Long trousers protect against scrapes if you slip. Pack a fleece or light insulated jacket and a hat for the wait at the top: you will sweat on the climb and then stand still in the wind while you wait for the light.
Bring at least a litre of water per person, a snack, sunscreen for the descent and small rupiah notes for toilets, drinks or tips. A phone torch drains the battery you need for photos and emergencies; a head torch keeps both hands free on the steep sections.
Pack out all litter and leave drones at home unless you have confirmed local permission. Because Batur is sacred, cover shoulders and knees around temples and keep summit photos respectful: in 2023 a tourist was deported after a semi-nude photo on Mount Agung, as Euronews reported.
- Shoes with a deep tread; no sandals or smooth-soled trainers.
- Warm layer and hat for the summit, plus a light rain jacket.
- Head torch, at least a litre of water, snack and sunscreen.
- Small rupiah notes and a charged phone.
How do you get to Mount Batur from Ubud or Seminyak?
Link to this answerThe simplest option is a tour with hotel pick-up in the small hours; listings we checked collect between roughly 01:00 and 03:00, earliest from the south coast. One operator quotes about 1.5 hours by road from Ubud and 2.5 hours from Kuta, next to Seminyak. Staying in Kintamani avoids the night drive.
Batur is in the Kintamani highlands, north-east of Ubud. Tour listings we checked in October 2026 schedule pick-ups from about 01:00 to 03:00 depending on area, with south Bali first. Seminyak is next to Kuta, so allow at least the Kuta time, and more in traffic. Common starting points include the Toya Bungkah area on the lakeshore and the Pura Pasar Agung route, which detikBali calls the easiest way up. Open Mount Batur in Google Maps or Toya Bungkah.
Driving yourself is possible, but unfamiliar mountain roads at 02:00 are not ideal, and you still need an association guide at the trailhead. If you go independently, arrange your return transport before you set off rather than relying on finding a ride afterwards. Our getting around Bali guide compares drivers, scooters and ride-hailing, and our Bali guide helps you choose a base.
To avoid the night transfer, stay a night in Kintamani or by Lake Batur; listings we checked offer later pick-ups for guests already in the area. A lakeside or caldera-rim stay also turns the hot springs into a relaxed afternoon rather than a rushed add-on.

Where can you soak in hot springs after climbing Batur?
Link to this answerHead to Toya Bungkah on the western shore of Lake Batur, where commercial hot-spring pools sit at the foot of the volcano. Batur Natural Hot Spring and the larger Toya Devasya complex are two of the best known. Many tours sell the soak as an add-on; check whether entry is included and confirm current prices locally.
The pools are fed by the same volcanic system you have just climbed and are warm rather than scalding. Facilities range from simple lakeside pools to a resort-style complex with several pools and a café. Published prices differ between sources, so we do not quote them; ask at the counter or check the venue’s own channels.
Map links: Batur Natural Hot Spring and Toya Devasya. Several pools sit close together, so confirm the venue name before paying for a voucher.
Rehydrate and eat before a long soak, lock away valuables, and shower first if the venue asks. If you would rather not drive back south the same day, a night near Lake Batur or on the caldera rim makes the trek an easy overnight.

When is the best time to do the Batur sunrise trek?
Link to this answerGo in the dry season for the best chance of a clear sunrise; BMKG expects the 2026/27 rains to start mostly in November–December and peak from December to February. Treks run year-round unless authorities close the mountain. Weekdays outside school and public holidays are quieter. No date guarantees a cloud-free summit.
BMKG, Indonesia’s meteorological agency, publishes seasonal outlooks rather than a fixed calendar. Its 2026/27 rainy-season outlook, published on 2 October 2026, expects most of Indonesia to enter the rainy season in November or December 2026, with the peak from December to February, and a later, shorter wet season than normal in much of the country because of a very strong El Niño.
In the wet season the path is slipperier and dawn cloud more likely. Check the forecast the evening before and ask your operator how it handles heavy rain: whether it reschedules, refunds or goes regardless.
Sunrise treks are popular, so book ahead for July and August and Indonesian holiday periods. If you are also planning Rinjani on Lombok, do Batur first as a short test of your fitness and footwear; our Mount Rinjani guide explains why Rinjani is a much bigger commitment.
Is the Mount Batur sunrise trek safe?
Link to this answerIt is generally a manageable guided walk, but treat it as a volcano hike, not a viewpoint stroll. The main risks are slips on loose ground in the dark, cold and dehydration, and changes in volcanic activity. Go with an association guide, check MAGMA, stay on the path and turn back if conditions worsen.
Loose sand and scree make the descent the trickiest part, especially in the dark or after rain. Walk at your own pace, use poles if you have them and tell your guide early if you feel unwell. Ask whether your group has more than one guide, so a slower walker can turn back without stopping everyone.
For volcanic hazards, follow the FCDO’s volcano advice: respect exclusion zones, monitor local media and follow local authorities, including any evacuation orders. The FCDO also notes that ash can fall outside exclusion zones and disrupt flights, which matters if you trek the day before flying home.
Insurance: check that your policy covers hiking without an add-on, that any altitude limit is above 1,717 metres, and that it includes emergency medical treatment.
