Desk-researched comparison, checked 17 October 2026; not a personally tested journey. Train times are Konkan Railway’s monsoon timetable, in force until 20 October 2026; faster non-monsoon times were not yet shown. The flight time is IndiGo’s published shortest. Buffers marked as assumptions are ours.

Is the train or the plane better from Mumbai to Goa?
Link to this answerFly if time matters: IndiGo gives 1 hour as the shortest Mumbai–Goa flight time and runs about five direct flights. Take the Konkan Railway for the coast and a centre-to-centre trip. On the monsoon timetable in force until 20 October 2026, the fastest train from CSMT, the Vande Bharat, takes 10 hours 35 minutes to Madgaon.
Konkan Railway runs a slower monsoon timetable every year. For 2026 it was in force from 15 June to 20 October, with sectional speed restrictions across the route (Konkan Railway). When we checked its train schedule portal on 17 October 2026 it still showed the monsoon times, so the faster winter timings due from 21 October were not yet available to quote.
On those monsoon times, the Vande Bharat leaves Mumbai CSMT at 05:25 and reaches Thivim at 14:20 and Madgaon at 16:00. The air alternative is IndiGo’s 435 km hop, which its route page says takes 1 hour at its quickest (IndiGo).

- Monsoon timetable: 15 June to 20 October 2026 (Konkan Railway)
- Vande Bharat 22229: CSMT 05:25 → Thivim 14:20 → Madgaon 16:00 (monsoon)
- Jan Shatabdi 12051: CSMT 05:10 → Thivim 15:30 → Madgaon 16:40, daily (monsoon)
- Flight: 1 hour at its shortest, about five direct IndiGo flights (IndiGo)
- IndiGo counter check-in closes 60 minutes before domestic departures
How long does Mumbai to Goa take door to door?
Link to this answerBy train from CSMT on the monsoon timetable, 9 hours 15 minutes to Thivim or 10 hours 55 minutes to Madgaon on the Vande Bharat, counting a 20-minute boarding buffer. By air, the airport buffer, flight and bag wait come to 2 hours 50 minutes, so the plane wins unless the transfers at both ends top 6 hours 25 minutes.
Rail: 20 minutes to board at CSMT (our assumption) + the Vande Bharat’s monsoon run, 05:25 to 14:20 at Thivim (8 hours 55 minutes) or 16:00 at Madgaon (10 hours 35 minutes) (Konkan Railway schedule, checked 17 October 2026) = 9 hours 15 minutes to north Goa or 10 hours 55 minutes to Madgaon. The daily Jan Shatabdi, 05:10 to 16:40 at Madgaon, comes to 11 hours 50 minutes on the same basis.
Air: the Aqua Line metro from its CSMT station to the airport, which MMRCL lists among its stations as CSMIA-T2 (MMRCL), for which we found no published ride time + 90 minutes at the airport (our assumption; IndiGo closes counter check-in 60 minutes before domestic departures) + 60 minutes in the air (IndiGo) + 20 minutes for bags (our assumption) + a road transfer from whichever Goa airport you use = 2 hours 50 minutes plus the two transfers.
What dominates on the train is the Konkan line itself, slowed by monsoon speed limits until 20 October. On the plane it is the ground at both ends, and Goa has two airports, so the one printed on your ticket can matter more than the flight time; check it against your hotel before you book.
| Leg | Train: CSMT → Thivim / Madgaon (monsoon timetable) | Flight: Mumbai → Goa |
|---|---|---|
| Centre to departure point | 0 min (start at CSMT) | Aqua Line from CSMT Metro to the airport; no published ride time (MMRCL) |
| Buffer before departure | 20 min (our assumption) | 90 min (our assumption); counter check-in closes 60 min before (IndiGo) |
| Scheduled journey | 8h55 to Thivim, 10h35 to Madgaon on the Vande Bharat | 1 hour at its shortest (IndiGo) |
| Arrival to your base | Thivim for north Goa, Madgaon for the south | 20 min for bags (our assumption) + road from Dabolim or Mopa |
| Door to door | 9h15 to Thivim, 10h55 to Madgaon | 2h50 plus both transfers |
Which trains run from Mumbai to Goa, and when?
Link to this answerKonkan Railway’s portal listed five useful trains from Mumbai CSMT on the monsoon timetable: the Vande Bharat, Tejas Express, Jan Shatabdi and Mandovi Express by day, and the Konkan Kanya overnight. The day trains reached Madgaon in 10 hours 35 minutes to 14 hours 45 minutes; the Konkan Kanya leaves at 23:02 and arrives at 11:40.
All five sets of times in the table are Konkan Railway’s monsoon timetable as its schedule portal showed it on 17 October 2026. Every one of these trains also calls at Dadar, Thane and Panvel on the way out of Mumbai, so you can board nearer your base.
Outside the monsoon the Vande Bharat runs more often: a February 2026 ministry answer lists 22229/22230 as running six days a week (PIB), and Konkan Railway’s 2024 notice put it back to every day except Friday after that year’s monsoon (Konkan Railway). Check the running days for your date.
Pick the Goa station by your base: Thivim and Karmali for the north and the Panaji side, Madgaon for the south. The overnight Konkan Kanya is the only one of the five that saves a hotel night, and it reaches north Goa mid-morning.
| Train | Runs (monsoon) | Leaves CSMT | North Goa stop | Madgaon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22229 Vande Bharat | Mon, Wed, Fri | 05:25 | Thivim 14:20 | 16:00 |
| 22119 Tejas Express | Tue, Thu, Sat | 05:50 | Karmali 16:20 | 17:20 |
| 12051 Jan Shatabdi | Daily | 05:10 | Thivim 15:30 | 16:40 |
| 10103 Mandovi Express | Daily | 07:10 | Thivim 19:46, Karmali 20:20 | 21:55 |
| 20111 Konkan Kanya | Daily | 23:02 | Thivim 10:06, Karmali 10:28 (next day) | 11:40 (next day) |
How much does the monsoon slow the Konkan Railway?
Link to this answerEnough to plan around. Konkan Railway ran its 2026 monsoon timetable from 15 June to 20 October, with speed restrictions on sections of the route. Its safety rules tell drivers to slow to 40 km/h in poor visibility and to stop if water rises more than 100 mm above the rails, suspending services until it recedes.
Konkan Railway’s 2026 monsoon notice sets out those measures, and a 28 May 2026 statement repeated the 15 June to 20 October dates and asked passengers to check timings before setting out. That check matters: a train’s monsoon departure time can differ from the one you remember from a dry-season trip.
Fewer trains run on some days, too. On the monsoon timetable the Vande Bharat ran only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and the Tejas Express on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while the Jan Shatabdi, Mandovi Express and Konkan Kanya stayed daily.
If you travel between June and October, weigh the scenery against a slower, thinner service, and compare it with the city’s own monsoon disruption risks in best time to visit Mumbai. From 21 October the non-monsoon timetable should bring faster timings; read them on the portal once they appear.
When is flying to Goa the better choice?
Link to this answerFor short breaks, for travellers starting near the airport, and for anyone heading to a beach far from Thivim or Madgaon. IndiGo runs about five direct flights on the route with a shortest time of 1 hour. Check which of Goa’s two airports your fare uses before you arrange the transfer.
IndiGo’s route page puts the aerial distance at 435 km and the quickest direct flight at 1 hour (IndiGo). Its airport list names both “Goa Airport” and “North Goa Airport” (IndiGo), so the code on your ticket matters; Dabolim is run by the Airports Authority of India.
In Mumbai, Metro Line 3, the Aqua Line, links its CSMT Metro station with the airport (MMRCL), which takes some of the risk out of the roads. IndiGo’s counter and web check-in both close 60 minutes before domestic departures (IndiGo).

How do Konkan Railway bookings work?
Link to this answerReserved trains open 60 days before travel, not counting the journey date, under rules in force since 1 November 2024, while foreign tourists can still book a year out. Weekend and holiday departures to Goa are worth booking once your dates are settled, especially the overnight Konkan Kanya, which saves a hotel night.
Indian Railways halved its advance reservation period from 120 to 60 days on 1 November 2024 to cut cancellations and no-shows, the Ministry of Railways said, and left the 365-day limit for foreign tourists unchanged. Tickets bought earlier under the old rule stayed valid.
Tickets are sold through IRCTC, Indian Railways’ online ticketing arm, and by resellers such as our partner 12Go, which add their own fees and support. Check the boarding station on the ticket: these trains start at CSMT but also call at Dadar, Thane and Panvel.
Watch the timetable changeover. A ticket bought during the monsoon for travel after 20 October runs on the non-monsoon timetable, so check the departure time printed on it against the current schedule before you set an alarm.

Is the train easier than the plane with luggage?
Link to this answerUsually, yes. A 2018 ministry answer to Parliament set the free allowance at 40 kg in AC Chair Car and AC 3-tier and 50 kg in AC 2-tier, carried in the compartment. IndiGo’s cabin allowance is one bag of up to 7 kg within 55 × 35 × 25 cm.
The ministry’s figures run from 35 kg free in Second Class to 70 kg in First AC, and excess luggage can be carried up to each class’s maximum at 1.5 times the luggage rate. A family with beach gear will find that more forgiving than an airline’s weight checks.
On the flight, IndiGo counts handles and wheels in its 115 cm limit for the cabin bag (IndiGo). Test yours in our cabin bag size checker and compare carriers with airline carry-on sizes.
On the train, a long day in a chair car is easier with a small bag at your feet for food, water and a charger, and the main case in the rack. In the monsoon months, pack a waterproof layer for the platform at either end.
Who should take the Konkan Railway, and who should fly?
Link to this answerTake the train if you want the Konkan coast from the window, are staying near Thivim, Karmali or Madgaon, or travel with heavy bags. Fly if you have a long weekend, are staying far from a Konkan station, or are travelling in the monsoon and cannot spare a full day.
The train suits travellers who see the journey as part of the holiday and those staying in Margao, beside Madgaon station, or within easy reach of Thivim or Karmali. Leaving CSMT before dawn on the Vande Bharat or Jan Shatabdi gets you to Thivim by mid-afternoon even on monsoon timings.
The plane suits short breaks and anyone whose hotel is far from the railway. Choose the airport by your base: our quick rule is to match north Goa hotels with the northern airport and south Goa with Dabolim, then check the transfer time with the hotel.
