How should you spend 3 days in Vancouver?

Spend day 1 on the downtown waterfront, Coal Harbour seawall and Stanley Park, ending at English Bay. Give day 2 to the North Shore: Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain. Use day 3 for False Creek, Granville Island and Kitsilano. Avoid Tuesday for day 1, when the Vancouver Art Gallery closes.

Vancouver works best as three geographies: the downtown peninsula with Stanley Park, the mountains across Burrard Inlet on the North Shore, and the False Creek shoreline with Granville Island and Kitsilano. Keeping each day in one area means fewer transfers and more time outside when the weather allows.

What does the 3-day Vancouver plan look like at a glance?

Each day stays in one area and has one anchor. Day 1 is the downtown waterfront and Stanley Park, day 2 the North Shore with Capilano and Grouse, and day 3 False Creek, Granville Island and Kitsilano. The table lists what to book, closed days and an indoor swap for each day.

Treat timings as a sketch. In summer, start outdoor sections early and save galleries for the afternoon; in winter, when the airport averages around 20 wet days a month from November to January, keep outdoor stretches short and the indoor swaps ready (ECCC).

The days can run in any order. The one fixed rule is to keep the Vancouver Art Gallery off a Tuesday; in winter, also remember that the Bill Reid Gallery keeps Tuesday-to-Saturday hours, so Sunday or Monday suits the North Shore day.

Which transit ticket works best for 3 days in Vancouver?

For most visitors, tapping a contactless card or a Compass Card per trip is simplest, with a $12.55 DayPass for the busiest day. All trips after 6:30pm on weekdays and all weekend trips count as one zone. Starting a journey at the airport stations adds a $6.50 AddFare.

TransLink’s fares are $2.85 for one zone, $4.20 for two and $5.40 for three on a Compass Card, or $3.50, $5.10 and $6.70 by contactless card or cash. A DayPass costs $12.55 and covers all zones (TransLink fares). On SkyTrain and SeaBus you tap in and out; on buses you tap only when boarding (TransLink).

A DayPass rarely pays off on a walking day, but it can on day 2 if you combine the SeaBus with North Shore buses rather than Capilano’s free shuttle. A Compass Ticket gives unlimited transfers for 90 minutes from tap-in, valid on the day of purchase (TransLink).

Ferries fill the gaps. The SeaBus crosses to Lonsdale Quay in 12 minutes, every 15 minutes during the day (TransLink SeaBus), and Aquabus ferries hop around False Creek (Destination Vancouver), which makes day 3 easier on the legs.

Day 1: how do you see the waterfront and Stanley Park?

Start at Waterfront and walk or cycle the seawall west through Coal Harbour into Stanley Park, then loop round to English Bay and the West End for sunset. If it rains, swap the park for the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Bill Reid Gallery, both on Hornby Street.

Destination Vancouver describes the Coal Harbour seawall as suited to cycling and leisurely walks, with marinas, mountain views and the occasional eagle, leading to “the city’s crown jewel, Stanley Park” (Destination Vancouver). Allow a full morning: the park’s forest and shoreline reward slow going.

Finish in the West End around Davie Village, a few steps from Sunset Beach with easy access to English Bay (Destination Vancouver), and eat there before heading back. In winter, Destination Vancouver suggests seawall walks between rain showers rather than whole days outdoors (Destination Vancouver).

The rain plan is two galleries close together. The Vancouver Art Gallery at 750 Hornby Street opens 10am to 5pm, until 8pm on Fridays, closes on Tuesdays and charges $35 general admission for visitors from outside B.C.; it is free on the first Friday of the month from 4pm. The Bill Reid Gallery at 639 Hornby Street keeps winter hours of Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.

Day 2: how do you see Capilano and Grouse Mountain?

Take Capilano’s free shuttle from Canada Place, about 20 minutes, for a timed morning entry, then continue to Grouse Mountain for the Skyride and views. Return by SeaBus from Lonsdale Quay if you want the harbour crossing. Book Capilano ahead, and note the Grouse Grind trail is closed until 10 November 2026.

Capilano Suspension Bridge Park sells single-day tickets for a date and arrival window, in 30-minute slots at weekends and holidays and one-hour slots on weekdays, and you can stay as long as you like once inside. Hours change through the season: 10am to 5pm from 2 to 19 November 2026, then 11am to 9pm for Canyon Lights from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with the park closed on 25 December.

The free shuttle runs year round from stops near Canada Place and downtown hotels and takes about 20 minutes; seats are first come, first served for park guests. The park warns that tickets bought from unauthorised third-party sellers may be invalid or refused at entry, so buy from the park or an authorised partner.

From Capilano, continue to Grouse Mountain, which lists mountain access daily from 7:30am to 9pm (Grouse Mountain hours) and runs the Red Skyride. Its Grouse Grind trail is closed for annual maintenance until Tuesday 10 November 2026, with the BCMC Trail open instead. Use TransLink’s trip planner for the bus between the two, then return via Lonsdale Quay and the SeaBus.

Day 3: how do you combine False Creek, Granville Island and Kitsilano?

Walk the False Creek seawall from Yaletown, cross to Granville Island by Aquabus ferry for the public market, then continue west to Kitsilano Beach. Head back downtown for an evening in Gastown and Chinatown. On a wet day, spend longer in the indoor market and finish with dim sum in Chinatown.

Start at Yaletown–Roundhouse on the Canada Line and walk the seawall along False Creek, which Destination Vancouver recommends for a morning run or a scenic walk (Destination Vancouver). Cross the water by Aquabus ferry, which hops around False Creek (Destination Vancouver).

Granville Island’s public market opened in repurposed warehouses on 12 July 1979 and still has six original tenants; Destination Vancouver says the island draws 10.5 million visitors a year, so arrive in the morning (Destination Vancouver). It is about 15 minutes’ walk on to Kitsilano, where Kits Pool is described as the longest saltwater pool in North America (Destination Vancouver).

Return downtown for the evening. Gastown’s cobblestone streets, Steam Clock and cocktail bars sit about six minutes from Chinatown, which has dim sum restaurants and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden (Gastown, Chinatown). We could not load the garden’s own site when checking, so confirm its hours before you plan around it.

What should you book before a 3-day Vancouver trip?

Book Capilano Suspension Bridge Park first, because tickets are for a set date and arrival window, and reserve early for Canyon Lights evenings in winter. Add dinner reservations for your Gastown or West End night. Galleries can be booked online to save time, and the art gallery’s free First Friday can be reserved too.

Capilano schedules entry in arrival windows, limits reservations for annual passholders at peak event times and advises reserving for Canyon Lights to avoid disappointment (Capilano). Those limits are a good sign of how busy winter evenings get, so book as soon as your dates are firm.

The Vancouver Art Gallery sells tickets online and offers free admission on the first Friday of each month from 4pm to 8pm, when you can reserve ahead or try for walk-in tickets. If you plan to hike beyond the city on a spare day, BC Parks day-use passes are free but are released two days ahead from 7am Pacific time in season.

How should you change the plan for rain, winter or summer?

In rain, move the galleries to the wettest day and keep Granville Island’s indoor market for lunch. In winter, add Canyon Lights and the Christmas Market at Canada Place, and expect short daylight. In summer, start the seawall early and book Bard on the Beach if you want an evening at the theatre.

Rain is the norm from October to March: the airport averages 15.4 wet days in October, 19.6 in November and 20.5 in December, although days with 10mm or more of rain are far fewer, at 4.5, 6.3 and 6.1 (ECCC). Most wet days are walkable with a good jacket; save the indoor swaps for the heavy ones.

Winter adds evening events. The Christmas Market runs at Jack Poole Plaza from 16 November to 24 December 2026, opening from 4pm on weekdays until 4 December, and Canyon Lights runs at Capilano until 10 January 2027. Snow in the city is infrequent, with 2.7 days of measurable snowfall in an average January, while Grouse Mountain runs skiing and snowboarding above the city.

In summer, July and August average 6.2 and 6.4 wet days, so outdoor plans usually hold. Bard on the Beach runs from June to September 2027 at Sen̓áḵw/Vanier Park and fits the evening of day 3. The Honda Celebration of Light fireworks have been cancelled indefinitely (Celebration of Light).

How do you fit arrival and departure days around the plan?

Land, take the Canada Line to downtown in about 25 minutes and spend a short first evening on the Coal Harbour seawall rather than starting day 1 jet-lagged. On departure day, the ride back costs less, because the AddFare applies only to journeys starting at the airport stations; the first train from Waterfront to YVR leaves at 4:48am.

TransLink puts the Canada Line ride from YVR to Waterfront at approximately 25 minutes (TransLink), with trains every 6 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day and the last departure from the airport at 12:54am (TransLink). If your flight lands in the afternoon, drop day 1’s galleries and keep only the seawall and English Bay, then pick up the art gallery on the rainiest of the next two days. Early-morning departures pair best with a hotel near Waterfront or Vancouver City Centre, both on the Canada Line.

Is three days enough for Vancouver?

Three days covers the essentials: the seawall and Stanley Park, one North Shore mountain day and the False Creek shoreline. It does not leave time for Whistler, Vancouver Island or longer hikes, which need a fourth day or more. If rain is forecast, keep the plan but swap the order of days.

The plan is built to bend around the weather rather than fight it. Keep the galleries and Granville Island’s indoor market for the wettest day, and move the North Shore to the clearest one, when the views from Grouse Mountain are worth the ride.
