Where should you stay in Cape Town?
Link to this answerStay in the City Bowl or Gardens for a first visit: several MyCiTi routes, the main museums and the Bo-Kaap are close. Pick the V&A Waterfront for easy evenings and Robben Island ferries, Sea Point or Camps Bay for the Atlantic, Constantia for Kirstenbosch and wine, or the False Bay villages for penguins and quiet.
Cape Town wraps around Table Mountain, so your base decides whether a day starts with a bus, a short e-hailing ride or a long drive. We compared eight areas using MyCiTi’s route list, the cableway, SANBI, Iziko Museums, South African Tourism and the FCDO, all checked on 17 October 2026.
We do not name, rank or claim to have stayed in any hotel; the price feel in the table is a qualitative comparison, not a quote. Shortlist properties on the Cape Town hotels page, and see the Cape Town destination guide for the wider picture.
Dates change the choice. South Africa’s summer school holidays run from 9–11 December 2026 to 11–13 January 2027 (school calendar), which we treat as peak season for beach areas, while June is the wettest month at 92.3 mm (WMO normals), when a base near indoor sights helps. How do Cape Town’s main areas compare?
Link to this answerThe City Bowl, Gardens, the Waterfront, Sea Point and Camps Bay all sit on MyCiTi routes, and the FCDO lists MyCiTi in the city centre and on the Atlantic Seaboard as generally safer transport. Constantia and the False Bay villages are car or e-hailing territory. Sea views and beaches cost more than the centre.
MyCiTi’s timetable list includes routes 101 and 111 (Vredehoek–Gardens–Civic Centre), 103 (Oranjezicht–Gardens–Civic Centre), 104 and 113 to the Waterfront, 105 (Sea Point–Fresnaye–Civic Centre), 106 and 107 (Camps Bay–Civic Centre) and 108, 109 and 118 linking Hout Bay with Sea Point. Load a myconnect card; MyCiTi sells multi-day packages for unlimited travel (MyCiTi).
The FCDO lists MyCiTi in the CBD and Atlantic Seaboard, and e-hailing confirmed in the app, as generally safer options, but advises against taking MyCiTi to townships and against waiting in the street for a car. It also says the threat of violent crime is higher after dark.
| Area | Best for | Getting around | Walkability | Noise and nightlife | Price feel | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| City Bowl (CBD) | First visits on a budget, museums, Bo-Kaap | MyCiTi hub at the Civic Centre | Good by day | Busy by day; some bars | Lower to mid | Quiet streets after dark; use e-hailing at night |
| Gardens, Tamboerskloof and Oranjezicht | First visits, restaurants, mountain views | MyCiTi 101, 103, 104, 111 and 113 | Good but hilly | Moderate | Mid | Steep streets; check parking |
| V&A Waterfront | Families, easy evenings, Robben Island ferries | MyCiTi 104, 113 and T01 | Easy within the precinct | Lively but managed | High | Tourist pricing |
| Green Point and De Waterkant | Restaurants and walks to the Waterfront | Short e-hailing rides to the centre and Waterfront | Good on the flat | Lively in De Waterkant | Mid to high | Event-day crowds near the stadium |
| Sea Point | Seafront promenade, longer stays | MyCiTi 105, 108, 109 and 118 | Flat seafront | Moderate | Mid | Busy Main Road |
| Camps Bay | Beach and sunsets | MyCiTi 106 and 107 | Beachfront strip | Busy in summer | High | Swim only between the flags |
| Constantia and the Southern Suburbs | Kirstenbosch, wine, quiet | Car or e-hailing | Limited | Quiet | Mid to high | Car-dependent; far from Atlantic beaches |
| False Bay (Muizenberg to Simon’s Town) | Penguins and a quiet coast | Car or e-hailing | Village centres | Quiet | Lower to mid | Long drive to the centre; seals can carry rabies |
Should you stay in the City Bowl or Gardens?
Link to this answerFor most first visits, yes. The City Bowl and Gardens put Iziko’s South African Museum, the Bo-Kaap Museum and the District Six Museum within a short walk or ride, and MyCiTi buses run to the Waterfront and the Atlantic beaches. Gardens and Oranjezicht are leafier and hillier; the centre is cheaper but quieter at night.
The Iziko South African Museum, at 25 Queen Victoria Street in Gardens, holds more than 1.5 million specimens and opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00. The Bo-Kaap Museum, at 71 Wale Street, is one of the oldest homes in the Bo-Kaap and opens Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00. The District Six Museum, at 25A Buitenkant Street, opens Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 16:00.
Routes 101, 103, 111 and 113 serve Vredehoek, Gardens, Oranjezicht and Upper Kloof Street, and route 104 runs from Oranjezicht through Gardens to the Waterfront (MyCiTi). For the mountain, the cableway’s first car up leaves at 08:00 from November to April and 08:30 from May to October (cableway), so an early night pays off.
The FCDO says the threat of violent crime is higher after dark and advises against walking alone in remote areas. In the centre, use e-hailing for evening trips and wait somewhere safe, not in the street, until your car arrives.
Is the V&A Waterfront or Green Point the better base?
Link to this answerChoose the Waterfront for convenience: Robben Island ferries leave from the Nelson Mandela Gateway, Zeitz MOCAA is in the Silo District, and MyCiTi routes 104, 113 and T01 run there. Choose Green Point or De Waterkant for a neighbourhood feel and more independent restaurants, a short ride from the Waterfront and the centre.
Robben Island Museum says its ferries depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront and that a tour takes about three and a half hours, including the crossing. Zeitz MOCAA, in the Silo District, opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:30 and free one-hour tours at 12:30 on weekdays.
The Waterfront suits families and late arrivals, because dinner is a short walk away within a managed precinct. The trade-offs are price and a tourist-focused feel. Green Point and De Waterkant suit couples and repeat visitors who want to walk to dinner and still reach the Waterfront, the centre and Sea Point quickly.
In winter, the Waterfront’s indoor options make it the easiest base when the weather turns: June averages 92.3 mm of rain over about ten days (WMO normals).
Should you stay in Sea Point or Camps Bay?
Link to this answerStay in Sea Point for a flat seafront promenade, frequent MyCiTi links and better value on longer stays; choose Camps Bay for the beach and sunsets at higher prices. Both suit summer. The FCDO advises swimming only between the red and yellow flags and avoiding deserted beaches, especially after dark.
MyCiTi route 105 runs from Sea Point through Fresnaye to the Civic Centre, routes 106 and 107 loop between Camps Bay and the Civic Centre, and routes 108, 109 and 118 link Hout Bay to Sea Point (MyCiTi). The FCDO lists MyCiTi on the Atlantic Seaboard among the generally safer options.
Both areas sit below Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, where the FCDO reports violent attacks and muggings against hikers. If you plan to hike, go on busy days, stay on marked trails and walk in groups of four or more; Wilderness Search and Rescue is on +27 21 937 0300.
Summer is peak season on this coast. Highs average 25.8–27.3°C from December to February (WMO normals), and the FCDO notes that wildfires can happen in hot, dry weather around Cape Town; follow any evacuation orders.
Is Constantia or the Southern Suburbs a good base?
Link to this answerYes, if you have a car and want gardens, wine and quiet. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden opens daily from 08:00, until 19:00 in summer and 18:00 in winter, and Iziko runs a museum at Groot Constantia. You lose easy bus links and beach evenings, so the area suits second visits and drivers.
SANBI opens Kirstenbosch every day from 08:00 to 19:00 between September and March and from 08:00 to 18:00 between April and August. International adults pay R270, children aged 6–17 R40 and under-sixes nothing; cash is no longer accepted, tickets can be bought online through Webtickets, and gates 1, 2 and 3 have free parking.
Iziko Museums lists a museum at Groot Constantia in the Constantia valley, which makes this area a natural base for a wine-and-gardens trip. None of MyCiTi’s listed routes serves Constantia (MyCiTi), so plan on a hire car or e-hailing.
If you drive, the FCDO recommends smash-and-grab film on hire-car windows, keeping windows closed at junctions and valuables out of sight, and physically checking that doors are locked. Read renting a car in South Africa before you book.
What about Muizenberg, Kalk Bay or Simon’s Town?
Link to this answerStay on False Bay if penguins, quiet and sea air matter more than city sights. Simon’s Town is beside Boulders, where South African Tourism describes boardwalks over an African penguin colony that began in 1983. Expect long drives to the centre and the cableway, and plan dinners close to your accommodation.
South African Tourism says Boulders has a SANParks-managed information centre and boardwalks, that the African penguin has been listed as endangered since May 2010, and that breeding runs from February to August. It also lists Boulders, Cape Point and Silvermine among the sections of Table Mountain National Park.
The FCDO notes that rabies has been detected in seals along the Cape Peninsula coastline: keep your distance, and get medical help and notify the authorities after any bite. It also advises swimming only between the red and yellow flags and avoiding isolated beaches.
From the Atlantic side, Chapman’s Peak Drive, a 9 km toll road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, is the scenic link (South African Tourism), but it closes as a precaution in severe wind or rain. Its status page showed it closed on the evening of 16 October 2026, so check before you drive.
How do you get from Cape Town airport to your area?
Link to this answerPre-book a transfer or use e-hailing, confirming the driver in the app. MyCiTi’s airport route, A01, was listed as temporarily suspended in October 2026. The FCDO advises staying on the M3 and N2 rather than the R300, using the Airport Approach Road at N2 exit 16, and ignoring GPS detours off main roads.
MyCiTi’s airport page said the airport service was temporarily suspended when we checked on 17 October 2026, with no restart date given. Until it returns, every area in this guide is reached from the airport by road.
The FCDO reports violent crime and targeted attacks on roads to and from the airport, including on visitors in hire cars, and advises against Borcherd’s Quarry Road towards Nyanga. It also warns of unregulated drivers posing as app-based taxi drivers at airports, so check the registration and driver details before you get in.
Entry paperwork has changed too: since 1 July 2026, travellers entering or leaving South Africa must complete an online traveller declaration before travelling (FCDO entry requirements). British visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa, with a passport valid for at least 30 days after departure and two blank pages.
What safety and power issues should affect your choice?
Link to this answerChoose a base where you can reach dinner and your bed without walking alone after dark, ask how the property copes with power cuts, and avoid isolated beaches. The FCDO says planned power cuts have fallen sharply but can still happen, and that crime risk can rise where security systems or lighting fail.
The FCDO says most violent crime happens in townships, informal settlements and other high-density areas, and advises visiting townships only with a responsible, reliable guide. At ATMs, it advises hiding your PIN and being wary of strangers who offer help.
Ask your accommodation whether it has backup power, whether gates, alarms and outside lighting keep working during a cut, and how guests arrive after dark. The FCDO suggests checking Eskom’s website or a loadshedding app for planned cuts.
- An address on a MyCiTi route, or a short e-hailing ride to your main sights
- Backup power for lights, gates and Wi-Fi
- Secure parking if you hire a car
- A pre-booked airport transfer while the MyCiTi airport bus is suspended
- A free-cancellation deadline that covers school-holiday price swings
Where should you book in Cape Town?
Link to this answerBook Gardens or the City Bowl for a first trip without a car, the Waterfront for families, Sea Point for longer stays, Camps Bay for beach holidays, and Constantia or False Bay if you are driving. Confirm the address, power backup, parking and free-cancellation deadline, especially for school-holiday dates.
Match the base to the plan. The Cape Town 3-day itinerary starts with the cableway and the Bo-Kaap, which suits Gardens or the City Bowl; the 7-day itinerary adds Robben Island, the winelands and the whale coast, which suits the Waterfront or Green Point with a driver or hire car for the day trips.
