Where to stay in Luxor: East Bank corniche, Karnak, station area, southern resorts, West Bank villages and Nile boats compared by access, noise and walkability.

Where should you stay in Luxor?

Link to this answer

Stay on the East Bank corniche near Luxor Temple for a first visit: you can walk to the temple, the Luxor Museum and plenty of restaurants. Choose the West Bank for quiet nights close to the tombs, the station area for budget rooms and trains, and the southern resort strip for pools and calm.

Luxor is a two-sided city. The East Bank holds the modern town, Karnak, Luxor Temple, the museums, the railway station and the airport; the West Bank holds the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, Medinet Habu and farming villages. The side you sleep on decides whether your evenings or your dawns are easier.

We compared seven options using the Ministry’s opening hours on egymonuments.com, Experience Egypt’s practical information and the FCDO’s safety advice. We have not stayed in or inspected any hotel for this page; for property-level notes, see Luxor hotels.

Plan the days first with the Luxor 3-day itinerary or the Luxor 7-day itinerary, and check best time to visit Luxor: in summer, a short walk to an evening site matters far more than in winter.

How do Luxor’s areas compare?

Link to this answer

The table compares seven bases on what each suits, how you reach the main sites, how walkable it is, likely noise and a relative price feel. The East Bank wins on evenings and restaurants; the West Bank wins on quiet and dawn starts at the tombs. Prices are qualitative and relative within Luxor, not quotes.

Opening times drive the table. Luxor Temple admits visitors until 19:00, so East Bank bases make for easy evenings; the Valley of the Kings opens at 06:00, so West Bank bases make for easy dawns.

Crossing the Nile is part of daily life: local boats and the road bridge south of town link the two banks, so ask how your hotel arranges crossings and drivers before you book a West Bank stay.

Is the East Bank corniche the best base for a first visit?

Link to this answer

For most first visits, yes. Staying between Luxor Temple and the Luxor Museum puts the temple’s evening opening, the museums’ split hours and a wide choice of restaurants within walking distance, with Karnak about three kilometres north. Expect traffic and persistent touts near the temple, and agree prices before any carriage or felucca ride.

The anchor is Luxor Temple, open until 20:00 with last entry at 19:00 (egymonuments.com). The Mummification Museum and the Luxor Museum both run morning and evening sessions, so a corniche base lets you visit in the cooler hours without a taxi.

The Ministry’s heritage page places Luxor Temple about three kilometres south of Karnak, once linked to it by a sphinx-lined processional way, so Karnak is a short taxi ride or a long, flat walk away.

The FCDO warns that touts and scammers target foreign visitors at tourist sites. Use metered taxis: Experience Egypt says the meter must be working and switched on at the start of the ride.

Should you stay near Karnak?

Link to this answer

Stay near Karnak if early starts at the temple and calmer river views matter more than a choice of evening restaurants. You can be at Karnak’s gate for its 06:00 opening, and the Sound and Light show at 20:00 is close by. The trade-off is a taxi ride to the Luxor Temple area for most dinners.

Karnak opens at 06:00 with last entry at 16:00, and tickets cost EGP 600. The Sound and Light show runs daily with an English performance at 20:00, so a northern base lets you see the temple twice in a day without long transfers.

If you stay at the northern end, plan at least one evening in the corniche area for dinner and Luxor Temple, then return by metered taxi. Check the hotel’s distance from Karnak’s entrance rather than from the river, because the complex is large.

Is the station and Television Street area good for budget stays?

Link to this answer

Yes, if price and train connections matter most. The streets inland from the corniche, around Luxor railway station and Television Street, have smaller, simpler hotels and guesthouses within a walk or short taxi of Luxor Temple. Expect traffic noise and basic rooms, and check reviews for air conditioning and hot water.

Trains are the reason to stay here. Experience Egypt describes air-conditioned services south to Luxor and Aswan, first-class carriages and sleeper cars, and says seats can be reserved up to seven days ahead; tickets are sold through Egyptian National Railways’ online portal.

Inland streets are less scenic and can be loud, so ask for a room away from the road. The FCDO notes there have been fatal train collisions and derailments in Egypt; read its latest advice before choosing rail for long journeys.

When do the southern resorts and Crocodile Island make sense?

Link to this answer

Choose the resort strip south of the town centre or Crocodile Island if you want gardens, pools and calm between early sightseeing starts, especially in hot months or with children. Almost everything requires a taxi or hotel transport, so budget for it and arrange a driver for the West Bank days.

From April to October, Luxor’s average high is 35°C or more (Egyptian Meteorological Authority via WMO), so a pool and shade turn the midday break into something useful rather than a luxury.

Check how far the hotel is from the corniche and whether it runs transport into town. A cheap resort rate loses its advantage if every outing needs a return taxi, so compare the final total, including transfers, before you pay.

Should you stay on the West Bank?

Link to this answer

Yes, if dawn tomb visits and quiet evenings matter more than restaurants. Gezira and Al-Bairat, near the river landing, mix village life with easy boat access; Qurna and Kom Lolah sit closer to Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens. Evenings are quiet, and you will need transport or a boat for most things.

The West Bank sites open early: the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Medinet Habu and the Valley of the Queens all open at 06:00. Sleeping nearby means you can reach the gate first without a pre-dawn crossing, which helps most in summer.

Expect small guesthouses and family-run hotels set among fields, and read reviews for air conditioning, mosquito screens and how the hotel arranges drivers. The FCDO names the Valley of the Kings among the exceptions to its Western Desert advice, so the West Bank sites are not under a travel warning.

Dinner on the East Bank means a crossing each way. On a week-long trip, consider splitting your stay: two or three West Bank nights for the tomb days and the rest on the East Bank for Karnak, the museums and restaurants.

Can a Nile cruise boat or dahabiya be your Luxor base?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you want to see Luxor and then sail on to Aswan. Experience Egypt says most cruise ships run between Luxor and Aswan on three- to seven-night trips, and dahabiyas sail the same stretch on a smaller scale. The FCDO warns about safety standards on some Nile cruises, so choose the operator carefully.

Experience Egypt describes three- to seven-night cruises between Luxor and Aswan, and its cruising page notes that a private dahabiya can be chartered to stop at quieter places along the river. A cruise replaces a hotel and some transport, which suits travellers who would rather not drive to Edfu and Kom Ombo.

The FCDO says overcrowding and poor safety standards have caused accidents on Nile cruises and advises booking through approved agents or tour operators. Ask for the boat’s name and operator, check the cabin deck and included excursions, and keep a night or two on land if you want independent time in Luxor.

How do you get from Luxor Airport to your hotel, and how safe is Luxor?

Link to this answer

Luxor International Airport is on the East Bank, so corniche and Karnak hotels are a short taxi ride away, while West Bank stays add a river or bridge crossing. Use a metered taxi or agree the fare in advance. The FCDO has no travel warning for Luxor; touts and scams are the everyday risk.

Experience Egypt lists Luxor International Airport among the airports served by EgyptAir, Nile Air and Air Cairo, with most domestic flights taking about an hour. If your hotel offers an airport pick-up, ask for the price in writing before you arrive.

The FCDO names Luxor, Aswan and the Valley of the Kings as exceptions to its Western Desert advice. Its safety page advises carrying your passport and visa or a copy, reporting crime to the tourist police on 126 and, for women travelling alone, sharing taxi details and your live location with someone.

If your flight is disrupted, see Egypt flight delay compensation; for entry rules, read Egypt visa on arrival. Continuing to the capital? Compare bases in where to stay in Cairo.

How should you book a hotel in Luxor?

Link to this answer

Decide your bank first, then compare the final total, including taxes and fees, for two or three properties in that area. Check the air conditioning, how the hotel arranges river crossings and airport transfers, and the cancellation deadline. In summer, prioritise a pool or a short walk to the evening sites.

On a three-day trip, one East Bank base is simplest. On a week, consider two bases: West Bank nights for the tomb days and East Bank nights for Karnak and the museums. Read the newest reviews for noise, hot water and air conditioning, which vary more by building than by area.

The Ministry describes winter as Luxor’s main season and marks the governorate’s national day on 4 November (MoTA), while the solar alignment at Karnak on 21 December drew thousands of visitors in 2024 (MoTA). Book early and keep rates refundable around those dates.
