Where to stay in Manama: Bab Al Bahrain, Bahrain Bay, Seef, Juffair, Adliya, Muharraq, Amwaj and Zallaq compared by airport bus, water taxi and walkability.

Key takeaways

Where should you stay in Manama?

Link to this answer

For a first visit, stay around Bab Al Bahrain or the Bahrain Bay waterfront: airport buses reach Manama Bus Terminal, and the souq, museums and water taxis are close. Choose Seef for malls, Juffair or Adliya for dining and nightlife, Muharraq for heritage near the airport, and Amwaj or Zallaq for beach resorts.

Manama is built around cars; Bahrain Tourism’s transport guide says walking is generally not recommended and points visitors to taxis, buses and car hire. Where you sleep decides how many taxi rides each day needs, so pick the area where you will spend the most daylight hours.

Bahrain Tourism’s accommodation search filters hotels by Adliya, Al Juffair, Amwaj Islands, Manama, Muharraq, Diyar Al Muharraq, Seef District, Zallaq and other areas. The table below sets eight of them side by side on buses, boats, walking and noise; we have not ranked or inspected any hotel. Dated guest scores are on Manama hotels.

How do Manama’s main areas compare?

Link to this answer

Bab Al Bahrain and Bahrain Bay win on buses, water taxis and walkable sights. Seef suits malls and resort stays, Juffair and Adliya suit dining and nightlife, and Muharraq suits heritage-first trips near the airport. Amwaj is a quiet island resort base, and Zallaq is for beach resorts and race weekends.

Transport notes come from Bahrain International Airport’s bus page, which lists routes A1, A2, 10 and 11, and Bahrain Tourism’s water taxi guide. Price feel is relative and qualitative; check live totals for your dates.

Heat sets the limits. The WMO averages for Bahrain reach 37.9°C highs in July with nights above 30°C, so even the most walkable areas become taxi areas from May to September.

Is the Bab Al Bahrain and souq area the best first-time base?

Link to this answer

Usually, yes. Both main airport routes stop at Manama Bus Terminal, the souq and Bab Al Bahrain are on foot, and Beit Al Quran and Al Fateh Grand Mosque are a short taxi ride away. The trade-offs are older buildings, busier streets and the FCDO’s caution about central Manama.

According to Bahrain Tourism, the souq has traded since the early 19th century and the gate went up in the 1940s as the arrival point from the nearby port; the souq opens 8.30am to 10pm daily. Its museums guide places the Bahrain Post Museum behind the gate and the Kanoo Museum in old Manama.

The water taxi stops at Bahrain Financial Harbour, which Bahrain Tourism calls the stop closest to Bab Al Bahrain, so you can cross to Muharraq or Bahrain Bay without a car. Beit Al Quran in Hoora and Al Fateh Grand Mosque both close to visitors on Fridays, so plan a weekday for them.

On safety, the FCDO reports that on 20 July the US Embassy in Manama warned Iran may seek to target unspecified locations in the city centre. The FCDO does not advise against travel, but check its latest update and local news before choosing a central base.

Should you stay at Bahrain Bay or in Seef?

Link to this answer

Choose Bahrain Bay for a polished waterfront with a promenade, The Avenues mall and water-taxi stops, close to the old centre around Bab Al Bahrain. Choose Seef for malls, a city beach resort and the A2 airport bus. Both are newer and quieter than the souq area, but most sightseeing still needs a taxi.

Bahrain Tourism describes Bahrain Bay as a mixed-use waterfront in three parts, The Wharf, The Gardens and The Park, with a jogging loop, paddleboarding and kayaking, and the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. The Avenues stretches 1.5 km along the bay with about 130 stores, and the water taxi stops at The Avenues, the Four Seasons and Bahrain Financial Harbour.

Seef District is served by the A2 airport bus, which the airport calls the fastest route into Manama, via City Centre and Seef. Bahrain Tourism’s resort guide describes a Seef resort with a private beach and villas, for travellers who want sand without leaving the city.

For culture, the Bahrain National Museum stands on a peninsula overlooking Muharraq, next to the Bahrain National Theatre, and opens 9am to 8pm except Tuesdays. It is a short ride from either base; in the cooler months, Bahrain Bay’s promenade is the more pleasant place to walk.

What about Juffair and Adliya for dining and nightlife?

Link to this answer

Juffair suits travellers who want hotel bars, a seafront and the water taxi’s starting point on their doorstep. Adliya suits food lovers, with Block 338’s restaurants, galleries and murals packed into walkable lanes. Both are livelier at night than other areas, and Adliya appears on the FCDO’s list of past protest locations.

Bahrain Tourism’s water taxi guide puts the service’s first stop, Manama East Coast, in Juffair beside the Marina beach area, Coral Bay Resort and Dolphin Park. Its accommodation search lists Al Juffair as a hotel area in its own right, alongside Manama, Seef and Adliya.

Alcohol is legal in Bahrain, the FCDO says, but drunken public behaviour is an offence that can lead to fines, prison or deportation, and airport staff will not tolerate passengers believed to be drunk. Bahrain Tourism’s FAQ says alcohol is available in licensed restaurants and hotels.

Bahrain Tourism calls Block 338 the epicentre of Bahrain’s food and cultural scene. Adliya is also on the FCDO’s list of past protest sites, and its advice is to move away from any large gathering, so follow local news if you stay there. See Manama eats for food ideas.

Should you stay in Muharraq, on Amwaj or in Zallaq?

Link to this answer

Stay in Muharraq for heritage on your doorstep and the shortest airport ride, with the A1 bus and the Sa’ada Marina water taxi. Amwaj Islands suits a quiet resort stay with boat operators at its marina. Zallaq suits beach resorts, Grand Prix weekends and trips to the south of the island.

Muharraq, the former capital, holds the UNESCO-listed Pearling Path, Souq Al Qaisariya and restored merchant houses, which Bahrain Tourism’s walking route links in three to four hours. The airport sends A1 buses to Muharraq Bus Terminal and runs loop routes 10 and 11 via Arad, Hidd and Muharraq; Arad Fort, open 9am to 5pm except Fridays, is on the Arad coast.

Amwaj Islands appears as a hotel area in Bahrain Tourism’s accommodation search, and its snorkelling guide lists a boat operator at Amwaj Marina. Expect a resort rhythm and taxis for everything else.

Zallaq is minutes from the Bahrain International Circuit, according to Bahrain Tourism’s circuit guide, which names beach resorts, a water park and Bilaj Al Jazayer beach nearby. It is the natural base for the 12–14 March 2027 Grand Prix, but a long drive from the souq.

How do you get from Bahrain International Airport to each area?

Link to this answer

Buses leave from zone 4A outside exit 4 on the arrivals level. Route A2, the fastest into Manama, serves Manama Bus Terminal, City Centre and Seef; A1 serves Muharraq Bus Terminal and Manama; loops 10 and 11 serve Arad, Hidd and Muharraq. Taxis start at BHD 2, plus a BHD 2 airport charge.

The airport’s bus page says a single ticket bought from the driver costs BHD 0.300, or BHD 0.275 with a GO Card, which costs BHD 0.500 at any of three bus stations, with daily spending capped at BHD 0.700. Its taxi page gives the metered BHD 2 starting charge and BHD 2 pickup fee, and puts the Careem and Uber meeting point next to Gate 1.

With heavy luggage or a late arrival, a taxi or ride-hailing car is simpler than the bus. If the flight itself goes wrong, our Bahrain flight delay compensation guide covers what you are owed.

How do you get around between areas?

Combine metered taxis or ride-hailing for most trips, red Bahrain Bus routes on main roads every 10 to 20 minutes, and the water taxi between Juffair, Bahrain Bay, Bahrain Financial Harbour and Muharraq’s Sa’ada Marina. Hire a car mainly for the south, and avoid long walks in the heat.

Taxis run on government-set meters and cost a little more at night, on Fridays and Saturdays and on holidays, says Bahrain Tourism’s transport guide, which adds that Uber operates and that buses come every 10 to 20 minutes on main routes, with seven-day passes at BHD 3 and 28-day passes at BHD 12. Bahrain Bus lists its fares, and the FCDO advises using only reputable taxi companies.

The water taxi runs Sunday to Thursday from 2.30pm to 9.45pm and Friday and Saturday from 12pm to midnight, at BHD 0.8 a stop or BHD 2.5 for a full day, booked through the Masar app. Boats are subject to a 6.30pm–4am curfew on Bahrain’s waterways, the FCDO says, so check with the operator before planning an evening crossing.

For the south, car hire helps. The FCDO says a UK photocard licence is valid for driving for up to three months, and Bahrain Tourism says the minimum hire age is 21. The Manama 7-day itinerary shows which days suit a car.

Is Manama safe, and which local rules affect your stay?

Link to this answer

Generally, yes: the FCDO describes crime as low in most areas and does not advise against travel, though it reports regional strikes, including in Bahrain, since 8 July, and protests that can flare with little warning. Carry photo ID, dress modestly, follow Ramadan rules and drink only in licensed venues.

Beyond the regional warning, the FCDO’s Bahrain page asks visitors to keep departure plans under review and avoid areas around military and security sites. By law you must carry photo ID such as a passport, its safety section adds, and you can be fined if you cannot produce it.

On conduct, the FCDO asks visitors to dress conservatively, with women’s clothing covering shoulders and knees, and says some hotels may ask couples for proof of marriage, depending on the hotel’s policy. Filming or photographing security and military sites is prohibited. Read the religious site etiquette guide before visiting mosques and Ramadan travel planning for the holy month.

When are rooms in demand, and what should you check before booking?

Link to this answer

Demand peaks around the Grand Prix on 12–14 March 2027 and during late-November exhibitions such as Jewellery Arabia. Look at the full price rather than the headline rate, match the address to a bus route or water-taxi stop, ask about the hotel’s policy on couples if relevant, and keep free cancellation while regional advice is changeable.

Jewellery Arabia and Cityscape Bahrain both run at Exhibition World Bahrain on 24–28 November 2026, according to Bahrain Tourism’s calendar, and Formula 1 lists the 2027 race for 12–14 March. Exhibition World Bahrain is near the circuit in Sakhir, according to Bahrain Tourism’s circuit guide.
