Where to stay in Stockholm: Norrmalm, Gamla Stan, Södermalm, Östermalm, Kungsholmen and Vasastan compared by metro, noise and Arlanda airport access.

Key takeaways

Where should you stay in Stockholm?

Stay in Norrmalm for a first visit: Stockholm Central and T-Centralen put the Arlanda Express and every metro line on your doorstep. Choose Gamla Stan for atmosphere, Södermalm for bars and cafés, Östermalm for upscale dining near Djurgården, and Kungsholmen or Vasastan for quieter residential streets with good transport.

Stockholm’s centre is spread over islands and peninsulas, but the main visitor districts sit close together. The real differences are atmosphere and noise: Gamla Stan’s old lanes, Södermalm’s nightlife, Östermalm’s polish and the residential calm of Kungsholmen and Vasastan.

We compared six bases using Visit Stockholm’s district guides, SL’s ticket and network pages, Arlanda Express fares and the UK government’s safety advice, all checked on 16 October 2026. We have not stayed in or inspected any hotel. For property shortlists with dated guest scores, see Stockholm hotels.

Pair this page with best time to visit Stockholm and the Stockholm 3-day itinerary, which runs from Gamla Stan to Djurgården and Skeppsholmen, so you can see which base keeps your days shortest.

How do Stockholm’s best neighbourhoods compare?

Link to this answer

The table compares six bases by nearest metro or rail station, walkability, noise and airport access. Norrmalm wins on transport, Gamla Stan on atmosphere and Södermalm on nightlife, while Östermalm, Kungsholmen and Vasastan trade a little centrality for calmer streets. Price feel is relative within Stockholm, not a quote.

District character comes from Visit Stockholm, which sums up Gamla Stan as “innovation in historical surroundings”, Norrmalm as “the beating heart of the city”, Södermalm as “trendy shops and bustling nightlife” and Vasastan as “culture on every street”. SL’s network covers the metro, commuter rail, commuter ferries, trams, light railways and buses (SL).

The stations named are the closest for each area; check the exact walk from your hotel, because hills, stairs and bridges can make a short map distance feel longer, especially in snow or with luggage.

Is Norrmalm the best base for a first visit?

Link to this answer

For convenience, yes. Norrmalm holds Stockholm Central Station, the Arlanda Express terminus and T-Centralen, so arrival is one train and most sights are one stop or a walk away. Visit Stockholm calls it “the beating heart of the city”. The trade-off is a busier, more commercial feel than the islands.

Visit Stockholm says Norrmalm has shifted from a place people passed through on their commute to a lively district for culture and restaurants, with the area around Sergels torg known for cultural institutions, music venues and well-known restaurants and bars (Visit Stockholm). It is also where you will find T-Centralen and Stockholm Central Station.

The airport link is the clincher. The Arlanda Express runs to Stockholm Central in 18 minutes, every 12 to 15 minutes, and Flygbussarna coaches stop at the City Terminal next to Central Station after a 35 to 45-minute ride (Visit Stockholm). For the full comparison, see Arlanda to Stockholm by train or transfer.

Choose a hotel a few blocks from the station rather than on the busiest streets if you want quieter nights. Gamla Stan is a short walk south across the water, and Nationalmuseum on Blasieholmen is close by to the east.

Should you stay in Gamla Stan?

Link to this answer

Stay in Gamla Stan if waking up in Stockholm’s oldest district matters more than quiet daytime streets. Founded in the 13th century, it puts the Royal Palace, Stortorget and the Nobel Prize Museum outside your door. Expect cobbles, steps and daytime crowds, so pack light and check lift access.

Visit Stockholm describes Gamla Stan as “at the crossroads of past and present”, with historic buildings holding boutiques and modern restaurants and some of the city’s oldest businesses around the Royal Palace (Visit Stockholm). Its main streets are Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan (Visit Stockholm).

The Nobel Prize Museum sits at Stortorget 2, and Gamla stan metro station, on the red and green lines, is on the island’s western side, one stop from both T-Centralen and Slussen. Note that the Visit Gamla stan visitor centre opens only in the summer months (Visit Stockholm).

The trade-offs are practical. The lanes are busy with visitors through the day, and older buildings may have narrow stairs, so confirm lift access and luggage arrangements before booking. If you are arriving late or with heavy bags, a Norrmalm hotel and a short walk over is a sensible alternative.

Is Södermalm a good place to stay in Stockholm?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you want cafés, second-hand shops and bustling nightlife. Once a cramped, poor district, Södermalm is now where Visit Stockholm points visitors for the city’s latest trends. Slussen links it to Gamla Stan in one stop, but expect weekend noise near the bars and some steep walks.

Visit Stockholm notes that Södermalm was a “cramped and impoverished part of Stockholm” in the early 20th century and is now known for trendy shops, cafés, restaurants and nightlife, with local tips pointing to Ringvägen for international food, the Nytorget area and second-hand shops (Visit Stockholm). Fotografiska, on the Stadsgårdshamnen waterfront, opens until 11pm daily.

Transport is straightforward. Slussen is on the red and green metro lines, one stop from Gamla stan, and Medborgarplatsen (green) and Mariatorget (red) serve the middle of the island. Djurgården ferries leave from Slussen (Visit Stockholm), which makes Södermalm a good base for day 2 of the 3-day itinerary.

The trade-offs are noise and hills. Streets near bars and restaurants stay busy at weekends, and some walks involve steep climbs, so check the route from the station before booking with heavy luggage. Arlanda trains also usually mean a metro ride to T-Centralen first.

Why choose Östermalm?

Link to this answer

Choose Östermalm for upscale shopping and fine dining, leafy parks and quick access to Djurgården’s museums, with ferries from Nybroviken and red-line metro stations at Östermalmstorg and Karlaplan. It is the most polished and usually the priciest base. Nightlife exists, but most streets are calmer than Södermalm’s.

Visit Stockholm describes Östermalm as “long synonymous with upscale shopping and fine dining”, alongside great culture and lush inner-city parks; it is home to Sweden’s national library, the national theatre stage and Stockholm’s oldest cinema (Visit Stockholm).

For Djurgården, ferries leave from Nybroviken as well as Slussen (Visit Stockholm), and Visit Stockholm says nowhere in the city has a higher concentration of popular attractions and museums than the island, from Skansen to ABBA The Museum and Gröna Lund (Visit Stockholm). SL tickets are valid on the Djurgården ferry, line 82 (SL).

Choose a hotel near Östermalmstorg for the shortest walks to the market hall, the metro and the waterfront. The main drawback is price, and for Arlanda you will usually ride the metro to T-Centralen first or take a Flygbussarna coach from the City Terminal.

Are Kungsholmen and Vasastan good bases?

Link to this answer

Yes, for travellers who prefer residential calm and local restaurants to old-town crowds. Kungsholmen, the westernmost inner-city district, is home to City Hall and served by the blue line at Rådhuset and Fridhemsplan. Vasastan centres on Vasaparken and has its own commuter-rail station, Stockholm Odenplan.

Visit Stockholm describes Kungsholmen as mainly residential, with municipal and government buildings whose workers support a good number of restaurants and cafés, and City Hall as one of the city’s “most important and iconic buildings” (Visit Stockholm). It suits repeat visitors and anyone who wants quieter evenings.

Vasastan is Stockholm’s northernmost district, with the Public Library, art museums, theatres and cinemas, and Vasaparken, “one of Stockholm’s most beloved parks”, used for summer picnics and winter ice skating (Visit Stockholm). Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan are on the green metro line, and SL commuter trains stop at Stockholm Odenplan (SL).

The trade-off for both is a metro ride, rather than a walk, to Gamla Stan and Djurgården. From Kungsholmen, Rådhuset’s blue line and Fridhemsplan’s blue and green lines reach T-Centralen quickly; from Vasastan, the green line runs south through T-Centralen to Gamla stan and Slussen.

Which area is best for Arlanda, and how do you get into town?

Link to this answer

Norrmalm is best: the Arlanda Express reaches Stockholm Central in 18 minutes, and Flygbussarna coaches stop at the City Terminal next door. The SL commuter train takes 43 minutes and runs twice an hour, with a passage fee for adults at Arlanda on top of the SL fare. Taxi fares are not regulated, so compare prices first.

The Arlanda Express charges SEK 340 for an adult single, SEK 460 for two adults travelling together and SEK 160 for travellers aged 18 to 25, and children up to 17 travel free with a paying adult; early-bird fares of SEK 199 are also advertised. Trains take 18 minutes and leave every 12 to 15 minutes (Arlanda Express).

Visit Stockholm gives the SL commuter train from Arlanda C as twice an hour and 43 minutes to Stockholm Central, Flygbussarna as 35 to 45 minutes to the City Terminal, and a taxi as about 40 minutes depending on traffic (Visit Stockholm). SL confirms the passage fee at Arlanda for adults on top of an SL ticket; under-18s do not pay it (SL).

Bromma, the city airport, is 20 minutes from the centre by Flygbussarna (Visit Stockholm). Wherever you stay, check the last trains and coaches against your arrival time, and see Arlanda to Stockholm by train or transfer for door-to-door options.

How do season and safety affect where you stay in Stockholm?

Link to this answer

In summer, waterfront bases in Södermalm and Östermalm make the most of long evenings and Djurgården ferries; in winter, a hotel close to a metro station matters more. On safety, the UK government warns that pickpockets target tourists in major Swedish cities and that gang-related crime has been reported in Stockholm.

Seasonal opening hours change how much you use the islands. Skansen on Djurgården opens 10am to 6pm from 31 May to 29 August 2027 but only until 3pm on winter weekdays (Skansen), so a base near the Djurgården ferries pays off more in summer. In winter, being close to museums with late openings, such as Fotografiska until 11pm daily (Fotografiska), matters more.

The UK government’s Sweden advice says “pickpockets often target tourists for passports and cash”, reports gang-related crime including shootings and explosions in Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenburg, and says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Sweden. Keep valuables secure in crowded places and plan your route home after late evenings.

Midsummer is the main holiday to check. Midsummer Eve falls on Friday 25 June 2027, when Skansen stays open until 10pm (Skansen); see best time to visit Stockholm for how holidays change the city.
