Desk-researched comparison, checked 17 October 2026; not a personally tested journey. Train times come from HŽPP’s published autumn 2026 timetable pages, and flight times from the Zagreb and Split airport boards for 17 October 2026. Buffers are our assumptions; the 2026/27 timetable starts on 13 December 2026.

Zagreb to Split train vs flight, checked October 2026: one daytime train taking 7h58 against 45–50 minute flights. Door-to-door sums, night train, fares.

Key takeaways

Is it better to take the train or fly from Zagreb to Split?

Link to this answer

Fly, unless you want the journey itself. In autumn 2026 HŽPP ran one daytime train, the 13:49 from Zagreb, which reaches Split at 21:47 after 7 hours 58 minutes. Croatia Airlines flies the route daily in 45 to 50 minutes, four times on the Saturday we checked. Door to door, the plane wins by hours.

The railway to Dalmatia runs inland through Lika rather than along the coast, and the timetable shows how slow that is. HŽPP’s “To the seaside by rail” page, updated on 2 October 2026, lists train 523 from Zagreb Glavni kolodvor at 13:49, calling at Perković at 20:36 and arriving in Split at 21:47, every day. Its bikes page gives the same times.

The air link is quick and regular. Croatia Airlines lists Zagreb–Split as a daily, year-round route, and Zagreb Airport’s departures board for Saturday 17 October 2026 showed OU 650 at 06:45, OU 652 at 14:35, OU 654 at 18:10 and OU 656 at 22:05. Split Airport’s arrival times for the first three put the flight at 45 to 50 minutes.

The train still has a place: as an overnight option on Friday nights, as a scenic day for travellers with time, and for anyone who will not fly. For driving instead, see renting a car in Croatia.

  • Day train: one a day southbound, 13:49–21:47 (7h58)
  • Night train: Friday nights, 22:06–06:53 (8h47), with couchettes and sleepers
  • Flights: Croatia Airlines, daily, 45–50 min; four departures on 17 Oct 2026
  • Door to door: about 8h13 by train; by air, 3h00 plus the airport bus in Split

How long does Zagreb to Split take door to door?

Link to this answer

About 8 hours 13 minutes by train: 15 minutes at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor plus the 7 hour 58 minute ride. By air, the legs we could verify add up to about 3 hours before the bus from Split airport into town, so even a slow transfer leaves the plane around four hours ahead.

Rail: 15 minutes at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor (our assumption; day trains need a seat reservation, so collect or check it first) + 478 minutes on train 523 (HŽPP) = 493 minutes, or 8 hours 13 minutes, arriving at Split station. HŽPP gives the station’s address as Obala kneza Domagoja 9 (HŽPP), on the harbour-front road.

Air: about 40 minutes on the Pleso shuttle from Zagreb’s main bus station, which runs every 30 minutes, so add 15 minutes of average waiting (Zagreb Airport, Pleso prijevoz) + 60 minutes at the airport, Croatia Airlines’ minimum check-in time (Croatia Airlines) + 50 minutes in the air (Zagreb and Split airport boards) + 15 minutes to leave the terminal (our assumption) = 180 minutes, or 3 hours, plus the airport bus into Split.

We could not open a published journey time for the Split airport shuttle or Promet Split’s line 37, and the airport is 20 km from the city (Split Airport). It barely matters: the bus would need to take more than 5 hours for the train to arrive first. What dominates is the eight-hour rail journey, not anything at the airports.

What is the Zagreb to Split train timetable in autumn 2026?

Link to this answer

One daytime train each way and a weekly night train in each direction. Southbound, 523 leaves Zagreb at 13:49 and reaches Split at 21:47 daily, and night train 1821 runs on Friday nights. Northbound, 520 leaves Split at 07:54 except on Sundays and holidays, when 522 leaves at 14:10.

HŽPP’s seaside page, updated on 2 October 2026, lists: 523, Zagreb 13:49 to Split 21:47, daily; 1821, Zagreb 22:06 to Split 06:53, on the Friday-to-Saturday night; 520, Split 07:54 to Zagreb 16:04, not on Sundays or public holidays (but running on 1 November); 522, Split 14:10 to Zagreb 21:24 on Sundays and public holidays; and 1820, Split 21:03 to Zagreb 05:47, on the Sunday-to-Monday night from 4/5 October.

That makes the northbound day train 8 hours 10 minutes on weekdays and 7 hours 14 minutes on Sundays. The current timetable runs from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026 (HŽPP). HŽPP’s catering page, last updated in June 2026, also lists a morning tilting train, 521, leaving Zagreb at 7:02; it is not in the autumn timetable, so 523 is now the only daytime departure from Zagreb.

Change is planned. HŽPP’s 2026 planning document, dated December 2025, said it intended to link Zagreb and Split with new, modern trains in the last quarter of 2026 (HŽPP). The October timetable did not yet show faster trains, so treat that as a plan until HŽPP publishes the times.

Is the Zagreb to Split night train a good alternative?

Link to this answer

For some travellers, yes. Train 1821 leaves Zagreb at 22:06 on Friday nights and reaches Split at 06:53, saving a hotel night and a daytime journey. HŽPP sells couchettes in six-berth compartments for a €7 supplement and sleeping berths for €9, €13 or €25 depending on the compartment size.

The supplements come from HŽPP’s seaside page: a couchette in a six-person compartment costs €7 on top of the ticket, and a sleeping berth €9 in a three-person compartment, €13 in a two-person compartment and €25 alone. Couchettes are sold online or at ticket offices; sleeping berths only at ticket offices, so allow time at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor if you want one.

The return night train, 1820, runs on the Sunday-to-Monday night, leaving Split at 21:03 and reaching Zagreb at 05:47. Together they suit a Friday-to-Sunday weekend on the coast without losing daylight to travel. Arriving in Split before 07:00 means a wait before most hotels allow check-in, so pick one with luggage storage.

Which flights run between Zagreb and Split?

Croatia Airlines operates the route daily, all year. On Saturday 17 October 2026, Zagreb Airport’s board listed departures to Split at 06:45, 14:35, 18:10 and 22:05, and Split’s board put the first three at 45 to 50 minutes. Northbound, five Croatia Airlines flights from Split were due in Zagreb that day.

The Croatia Airlines schedule marks Zagreb–Split as year-round and daily in both its summer and winter 2026/27 tables. Times vary by day: on Friday 16 October the Zagreb departures board showed OU 650 at 11:25, OU 654 at 12:30 and OU 656 at 22:05, plus a Rome flight routed via Split. Northbound on 17 October, flights from Split were due at Zagreb at 07:00, 13:20, 16:45, 20:35 and 23:30 (Zagreb Airport).

Croatia Airlines advises checking in at the airport 120 minutes before departure and requires check-in at least 60 minutes before, unless stated otherwise (Croatia Airlines). Split Airport advises leaving 1.5 hours early in summer because of traffic on the road to the airport (Split Airport).

How do HŽPP fares and reservations work on Zagreb to Split?

Link to this answer

Buy online: HŽPP tickets bought online are 10% cheaper than at the counter, and tickets bought on board cost 10% more. Seats on the daytime Zagreb–Split trains must be reserved, for €1.06. HŽPP’s “To the seaside by rail” offer advertises 40% off journeys to the coast. Interrail passes cover Croatia.

The 10% online discount applies to all domestic routes (HŽPP). The seaside offer, on the page updated on 2 October 2026, is 40% off travel to the coast from any station and does not apply to trips under 25 km; it also sets out the compulsory €1.06 seat reservation on day trains between Zagreb Glavni kolodvor and Split.

Croatia is among the countries covered by Interrail and Eurail passes (HŽPP), but HŽPP’s page does not spell out reservation rules for pass holders, so ask at the ticket office or budget for the reservation fee. Our Interrail vs Eurail guide explains when a pass is worth it.

Coaches also run between Zagreb and Split and are the practical land alternative when the single train does not suit; compare them alongside the train before you book.

How do luggage rules compare on the train and the plane?

Link to this answer

The train is more generous. HŽPP charges €3.58 per item only if a bag weighs more than 30 kg or cannot fit above or below your seat. Croatia Airlines’ cheapest domestic fare includes one 8 kg cabin bag of 55 × 40 × 23 cm and a 4 kg personal item, but no checked bag.

HŽPP’s FAQ sets the €3.58 fee for heavy or oversized items and a €1.99 ticket for bicycles; trains 520, 522 and 523 have bike space, while night trains take folding bikes only. For a beach holiday with a large case, that is simpler than an airline’s bag fees.

On the flight, Croatia Airlines’ fare comparison shows its domestic FlyEasy fare with “only hand baggage”: one cabin bag of up to 8 kg and 55 × 40 × 23 cm plus a personal item of up to 4 kg and 40 × 30 × 10 cm (Croatia Airlines). Check your bag in the cabin bag size checker and see airline carry-on sizes.

Are there engineering works or disruption on the line?

Yes, but they mostly miss the Split trains. HŽ Infrastruktura has buses replacing trains between Split and Dujmovača on 24 and 31 October 2026 from 09:10 to 21:10, and weekday closures between Duga Resa and Oštarije from 19 to 30 October. HŽPP’s bus lists name only local and Rijeka-line trains.

The Dujmovača tunnel works close the Split–Dujmovača section on 24 and 31 October 2026 from 9:10 am until 9:10 pm, with buses instead of trains (HŽ Infrastruktura); HŽPP’s replacement list covers local trains around Split (HŽPP). Train 523 is due in Split at 21:47, after the closure ends, and 520 leaves at 07:54, before it starts.

On the Zagreb side, the line between Duga Resa and Oštarije is closed from 19 to 30 October 2026, except at weekends, between 9:00 am and 1:50 pm (HŽ Infrastruktura). HŽPP’s bus list for those works names only Rijeka-line trains (HŽPP), and the Split trains pass outside that window. Check HŽPP’s notices the day before you travel all the same.

We found no official carbon calculator covering this route from HŽPP or the Croatian government, so we give no CO2 figure rather than borrow one from another corridor.

Who should take the train from Zagreb to Split, and who should fly?

Link to this answer

Fly if you are going city to city and value the day: the plane saves four hours or more door to door. Take the train if you want the inland scenery through Lika, prefer a Friday night sleeper to a hotel night, are carrying bulky luggage or a bike, or do not fly.

The single daytime train leaves at 13:49, so the train costs you an afternoon and evening; the morning flights let you be on a Split beach by lunchtime. The night train is the clever compromise for a long weekend.

If neither suits, a hire car adds flexibility for stops at Plitvice or the coast; see renting a car in Croatia. For flight-search tactics, read cheap flights: 21 ways.

  • Fly: city-to-city trips, tight schedules, morning arrivals
  • Day train: scenery, no airports, bikes and big bags
  • Night train: Friday nights out, Sunday nights back, couchette from €7
  • Check: HŽPP’s new timetable from 13 December 2026
