When is the best time to visit Andorra la Vella?
Link to this answerGo from late June to mid-September for hiking, valley walks and long evenings, or from December to early April for skiing, when Grandvalira plans to open from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. May, October and November are quieter but changeable. Avoid 1 January, 14 March, 8 September and 25 December if shopping matters.
Andorra la Vella is a mountain capital, so the season decides what the trip is: snow sports in winter, trails and festivals in summer, and quiet shopping weeks in between. Our monthly temperature normals come from the national weather service, meteo.ad, which compares each month with its 1991–2020 average at the reference station at FEDA’s hydroelectric plant in the central valley.
The calendar matters as much as the weather. French school holidays shape the busiest ski weeks, and Andorra Turisme says the country’s more than 1,000 shops close only four days a year. Once your dates are set, compare bases in where to stay in Andorra la Vella and plan the days with the 3-day itinerary.
- Best for hiking and long days: late June to mid-September
- Best for skiing: January to March (season planned 4 Dec 2026–4 Apr 2027)
- Quietest: May, October and November
- Stormiest: July and August afternoons
- Shops closed: 1 January, 14 March, 8 September and 25 December
What is the weather like in Andorra la Vella month by month?
Link to this answerIn the central valley, the 1991–2020 average temperature runs from about 3°C in January to 19.4°C in July and 19.1°C in August, according to meteo.ad. Winter storms can bring snow to the valley floor, summers bring afternoon thunderstorms, and the high mountains around town are far colder than the capital.
Meteo.ad does not publish a monthly normals table online that we could find, but each monthly bulletin gives the mean temperature at FEDA’s plant and its anomaly from the 1991–2020 normal. We derived each month’s normal by subtracting the anomaly; the September 2026 bulletin states the July and August normals directly, and November comes from the autumn 2025 seasonal anomaly, so treat it as approximate.
Altitude changes everything. On 8 January 2026 the highest reading was 13°C at the Roc de Sant Pere station, at 1,105 metres, while the lowest that month was −17.8°C at Fonts d’Arinsal, at 2,681 metres. The recent readings in the table, from bulletins such as February 2026, March 2026 and December 2025, show how far a single month can stray from the average; in December 2025, snow reached the floor of the central valley on Christmas Day.

| February | 4.1 | Feb 2026: 6.5°C; over three times the usual precipitation | Ski peak; French winter holidays |
| March | 6.8 | Mar 2026: 7.5°C; normal rainfall | Ski continues; shops shut 14 March |
| April | 8.8 | Apr 2026: 12.6°C, warmest April since 1950 | Ski season ends; spring storms |
| May | 12.4 | May 2026: 13.9°C; dry | Quiet shoulder season |
| June | 16.5 | Jun 2026: 20.4°C; 44% of usual rain | Hiking starts; Sant Joan fires |

When is ski season, and how does it affect Andorra la Vella?
Link to this answerGrandvalira’s 2026–27 season is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, weather permitting, with slopes open 9am to 5pm. Demand peaks over Christmas and in February, when French winter holidays run by zone; Toulouse’s zone C is off from 6 to 22 February 2027. Book rooms early for those weeks.
Grandvalira says both dates are subject to weather and snow. Andorra Turisme lists its sectors as Pas de la Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp, alongside Pal Arinsal, with 63 km of slopes, Ordino Arcalís, with 30.5 km, and Naturland’s 15 km of cross-country trails above 2,000 metres. From the capital, the Funicamp in Encamp reaches the Solanelles slopes in about 25 minutes.
School calendars drive the busiest weeks. French Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 in every zone, and French winter holidays are staggered between 6 February and 8 March 2027, franceinfo reports. Snow is never guaranteed, but last winter was generous: the 2025–26 winter bulletin recorded 220% of normal precipitation at FEDA’s plant, the wettest winter since 1997.
Check meteo.ad’s avalanche bulletin before going off-piste, and remember the FCDO rule that drivers must use winter tyres or carry snow chains from 1 November to 15 May. For a first ski trip, read our ski trip planning guide for beginners.
Is summer a good time to visit Andorra la Vella?
Link to this answerYes, for hiking, festivals and long evenings, but expect heat and storms. July and August average about 19°C in the central valley, yet July 2026 averaged 23.7°C with 23 days of 30°C or more. Afternoon thunderstorms are part of the pattern, and August 2026 brought more than double its usual rain.
Summer has its own events. Cirque du Soleil’s Ràdio Andorra played from 3 July to 2 August 2026, Tuesday to Saturday at 10pm, in a tent opposite the government building in the centre, and Altaveu reported in August 2026 that the company will return in 2027 on dates that avoid the capital’s Festa Major. The Funicamp ran its summer season from 11 July to 8 September 2026, 10am to 4pm. On Sant Joan’s night, the falles fire tradition is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, Andorra Turisme notes.
Storms can be intense. The August 2026 bulletin describes 24.4 mm of rain in 30 minutes at La Comella on 8 August, and a storm on 15 August that hit Pas de la Casa, with 65.4 mm at the Envalira-Antenes station. Start hikes early, check meteo.ad’s warnings, and be off exposed ridges by mid-afternoon.
Heat is a newer risk. The September 2026 bulletin recorded the country’s first September heatwave, from 3 to 7 September, and a September record of 35.9°C at Borda Vidal on 4 September.
Are spring and autumn good for a quieter trip?
Link to this answerThey are the quietest windows, with trade-offs. May and October are usually mild in the valley, with May 2026 averaging 13.9°C and October 2025 12.4°C, but ski lifts are closed and summer lift services have not started or have ended. In April and November, snow can still fall high up.
Spring swings fast. April 2026 was the warmest April since 1950, yet its first day brought more than 40 cm of snow above 2,000 metres and gusts of 171 km/h on the Tosa dels Espiolets. May 2026 settled into sunny mornings and afternoon storms.
Autumn is drier and calmer in the valley. October 2025 had only 38% of its usual rain and the snow line stayed above 2,400 metres, while the autumn bulletin dates the first proper snowfall of the season to 6 November and records a 192 km/h gust above Soldeu on 14 November. Andorra Turisme also lists a Shop in Andorra Festival every autumn.
Shoulder seasons suit museum days, but check hours: Andorra’s national museums close on Mondays all year and on Sundays from October to May.
Which holidays and school breaks affect Andorra la Vella?
Link to this answerAndorra’s shops close only four days a year: 1 January, 14 March (Constitution Day), 8 September (Our Lady of Meritxell) and 25 December. Crowds follow neighbouring school calendars instead: French Christmas holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, and French winter holidays fall between 6 February and 8 March 2027.
The four closure days come from Andorra Turisme. School dates come from franceinfo’s 2026–27 calendar: zone C, which includes the Toulouse and Montpellier académies, has winter holidays from 6 to 22 February and spring holidays from 3 to 19 April 2027, while zone B runs from 20 February to 8 March.
Shopping trips also carry rules on the way out. Andorra Turisme says allowances apply to goods taken back into the EU, and the FCDO warns that France and Spain are strict about tobacco from Andorra.
| Date | Occasion | Effect on your trip |
|---|---|---|
| 19 Dec 2026–4 Jan 2027 | French Christmas holidays | Busy ski weeks |
| 25 Dec 2026 and 1 Jan 2027 | Christmas Day, New Year’s Day | Shops closed |
| 6–22 Feb 2027 | French winter holidays, zone C (Toulouse) | Peak ski demand |
| 20 Feb–8 Mar 2027 | French winter holidays, zone B | Ski demand stays high |
| 14 Mar 2027 | Constitution Day | Shops closed |
| 3–19 Apr 2027 | French spring holidays, zone C | Busier after ski season |
| 8 Sep 2027 | Our Lady of Meritxell | National holiday; shops closed |
What does the tourist tax add, and is it changing?
Link to this answerAndorra charges a stay tax per person per night for the first seven nights: €3 in five-star hotels, €2 in four-star hotels and tourist flats, €1.50 in two- and three-star hotels and €1 elsewhere. Under-16s and Andorran residents are exempt. A proposal to nearly double it in high season had not become law when we checked.
Rates and exemptions come from Law 19/2022, which requires the tax to appear separately on your invoice and exempts nights beyond the seventh in the same property; VilaWeb reported that collection began on 1 July 2022.
In May 2026, Altaveu reported that the tourism minister had proposed a seasonal tax that would nearly double rates from December to March and in August, leaving low-season rates unchanged; it would need a change in the law and could take effect in late 2026 or 2027. We quote no room prices, so compare final totals including the tax for your dates.
What weather and road risks should you plan for?
Link to this answerSnow, wind and summer storms. From 1 November to 15 May, drivers must use winter tyres or carry snow chains, the FCDO says, and meteo.ad publishes warnings and an avalanche bulletin. Gusts can be violent on the ridges, reaching 192 km/h above Soldeu in November 2025, so check forecasts before lifts and hikes.
The FCDO adds that Andorra’s drink-driving limits are stricter than the UK’s, with fines of up to €600 and a two-month ban, and that hire companies may ask for a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age or an International Driving Permit. It describes street crime as rare but advises buying your own drinks and keeping them in sight.
Winter storms can disrupt travel in and out. The 2025–26 winter bulletin lists 13 named storms between early December and mid-February, three of them with an orange impact level in Andorra. Andorra has no airport, so most visitors arrive by coach from Barcelona or Toulouse, Andorra Turisme says; leave slack in your plans when snow is forecast.
Summer’s risk is different: the June and July 2026 bulletins describe heatwaves and storm-driven, patchy rain, with small forest fires on 9 and 26 July.
When should skiers, hikers, shoppers and families go?
Link to this answerSkiers should aim for January to March, avoiding French February holidays if they dislike queues. Hikers do best from late June to September, starting early to beat storms. Shoppers can come any time except the four closure days, and families should weigh summer festivals against busy ski holidays.
These picks combine the meteo.ad normals with the season and holiday dates above; they are not based on room-price data. Museum-goers should avoid Mondays and, from October to May, Sundays, when the national museums close.
For a short first visit, the Andorra la Vella 3-day itinerary works in any season, and things to do in Andorra la Vella adds ideas; the Andorra la Vella destination guide has the overview.

What is the verdict on the best time to visit Andorra la Vella?
Link to this answerFor most visitors, mid-June to mid-September is the best time: warm valley days, open high trails and the summer festival calendar. Choose January to March for skiing, May or October for quiet shopping and museums, and avoid the four shop-closure days. Whatever the season, plan around fast-changing mountain weather.
In one line: July for festivals, September for the best walking, February for snow and crowds, and October for calm. Check the latest meteo.ad forecast and warnings in the days before you travel, and the Grandvalira season page if you ski.
