Key takeaways

Where should you stay in Andorra la Vella?

Link to this answer

Stay in central Andorra la Vella for buses, shops and the old quarter, or in Escaldes-Engordany next door for Caldea and slightly calmer streets. Skiers should sleep in Encamp, Canillo, Soldeu or Pas de la Casa for Grandvalira, or in La Massana and Ordino for Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís.

Andorra is small, and the capital is the hub of its national bus network: most lines leave the Estació Nacional d’Autobusos, according to the Govern d’Andorra’s timetable, and the only night bus links Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordany and Sant Julià de Lòria, the operator says. So the first question is whether you want evenings in town or mornings on the slopes.

We name no hotels and quote no rates; price feel below is relative within Andorra, and ski holidays raise demand everywhere. Check dates in the best time to visit Andorra la Vella, then compare properties on Andorra la Vella hotels.

How do the main areas compare?

Central Andorra la Vella is the most connected and walkable, Escaldes-Engordany the best for spa breaks, and Sant Julià de Lòria the quiet southern gateway. Encamp suits budget-minded skiers, Canillo and Soldeu put you near Grandvalira’s lifts, La Massana and Ordino are the calmest villages, and Pas de la Casa is a border ski resort.

Bus details come from the September 2026 mid-season timetable and Andorra Turisme’s route list; parish descriptions from Andorra Turisme. Walkability assumes you want to reach the capital’s old quarter and shopping streets.

Price feel is our qualitative read, not a quote: the capital and Escaldes hold the widest range of hotels, and slope-side villages command more in ski season. Single bus fares start at €1.90 within one zone, per the operator.

Is central Andorra la Vella the best base?

Link to this answer

For a first visit without a car, yes. You can walk to Casa de la Vall, the old quarter and the Shopping Mile, and most national bus lines start at the Estació Nacional d’Autobusos. The trade-offs are traffic on the main avenues and busier streets, so ask for a room away from the road if you sleep lightly.

Andorra Turisme describes the Shopping Mile as a modern area with a pedestrian zone linking Avinguda Meritxell, Vivand and Fener Boulevard, with the historic centre’s older streets nearby. Casa de la Vall, built in the late 16th century, was the seat of the Consell General from 1702 to 2011.

The timetable shows the L2, L3, L4, L5, L6 and L7 calling at the Estació Nacional, while the L1 to Sant Julià leaves from Carrer de Na Maria Pla. The operator’s office on Carrer de la Cúria opens Monday to Saturday from 8am to 8pm, per its fares page.

Evenings are easiest here: the night bus runs hourly from the Estació Nacional from 11pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday nights and before holidays, with two late departures on other nights. Plan your days with the Andorra la Vella 3-day itinerary.

Why stay in Escaldes-Engordany?

Link to this answer

Stay in Escaldes-Engordany for Caldea, a quieter feel than the capital’s busiest avenues and an easy walk into Andorra la Vella. The parish, created in 1978, is built around thermal waters and leisure, and the Express bus to Sant Julià starts at Caldea. It suits spa breaks, couples and shoppers who want both towns on foot.

Andorra Turisme describes Escaldes-Engordany as the parish of thermal waters and health tourism, home to the Caldea spa, the church of Sant Miquel d’Engolasters and Engolasters lake. Its interesting facts page puts Caldea’s thermal spa at more than 30,000 m², and its wellness page dates the centre to 1994; check session times before you go.

The Express bus leaves Caldea for Sant Julià every 20 minutes on weekdays from 6:20am to 9pm, and every 30 minutes at weekends, and the night bus serves Escaldes too. Check the walk from your hotel to Caldea and the nearest bus stop before you book.

Is Sant Julià de Lòria or Santa Coloma a good base?

Link to this answer

Choose the south if you arrive from Spain, want lower-key evenings or plan a day at Naturland. Santa Coloma has a Romanesque church and the Espai Columba, and the L1 links both places to the capital every 10 to 20 minutes on weekdays. The trade-off is a long ride to the ski areas in the north and east.

Andorra Turisme calls Sant Julià de Lòria the southern gateway from Spain, with the Naturland adventure park, the village of Auvinyà and the Canòlich sanctuary. In Santa Coloma, the Espai Columba explains Andorra’s medieval painting; entry is €7.

The L1 runs every 10 to 20 minutes on weekdays from 6:30am to 10pm and every 30 minutes at weekends, and the night bus ends in Sant Julià. Drivers from Spain arrive on the N-145 from La Seu d’Urgell, home to Andorra–La Seu airport, Andorra Turisme says.

Should skiers stay in Encamp, Canillo or Soldeu?

Link to this answer

Encamp is the value pick: the Funicamp lift reaches Grandvalira’s Solanelles area in about 25 minutes, and the L2 runs to the capital every 12 to 15 minutes on weekdays. Canillo, Soldeu and El Tarter put you closer to the slopes, but the L3 to Soldeu has no Sunday service, so check the timetable before you book.

The Funicamp, which Grandvalira calls the longest funitel in Europe, climbs above 2,500 metres and has a covered car park for 500 vehicles; in summer 2026 it ran from 11 July to 8 September. Encamp also has the National Automobile Museum and the church of Santa Eulàlia, per Andorra Turisme.

Canillo is the largest parish by territory and one of the least densely populated, with the Meritxell sanctuary and the Roc del Quer viewpoint. By bus, the L4 runs every 30 minutes daily through Canillo towards Pas de la Casa, while the L3 to Soldeu runs every 20 minutes at weekday peaks, every 30 minutes on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays.

Grandvalira’s 2026–27 season is planned from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with slopes open 9am to 5pm. If you drive, the FCDO says winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory from 1 November to 15 May.

Are La Massana and Ordino better for quiet stays?

Link to this answer

Yes. La Massana suits families and active travellers, with Pal Arinsal’s slopes, a bike park and the Comapedrosa nature park, while Ordino is the most picturesque parish, with Casa d’Areny-Plandolit and the Sorteny nature park. Buses link both to the capital, but there is no night bus, so evenings out need planning.

Andorra Turisme lists the Casa Rull museum, the Pal-Arinsal ski area and the Comapedrosa park, whose 2,943-metre peak is Andorra’s highest, in La Massana, and describes Ordino as the most picturesque parish, with the Tristaina solar viewpoint at 2,701 metres. Pal Arinsal has 63 km of slopes and Ordino Arcalís 30.5 km.

The L7 runs from the capital through La Massana to Ordino every 15 minutes on weekdays until about 8pm and every 30 minutes at weekends; the L5 serves Arinsal and the L6 runs to Ordino and La Cortinada every 30 minutes. Casa d’Areny-Plandolit in Ordino costs €7 and follows the national museum hours.

When does Pas de la Casa make sense?

Link to this answer

Stay in Pas de la Casa only if skiing on Grandvalira’s eastern side or arriving from France is the priority. The L4 links it with the capital every 30 minutes daily, from 6:25am to 9:25pm outbound and 6:40am to 9:40pm back, but museums, the old quarter and Caldea are a long ride away.

The L4 timetable also shows a stop at the Envalira tunnel, the high road between the central valleys and the French border. In winter, the FCDO rules on winter tyres and chains apply, and storms can slow the road; the August 2026 bulletin also records a violent summer storm in Pas de la Casa on 15 August.

From France, Andorra Turisme points to the L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre railway station, about 11 km by road from the border, and to coach links with Toulouse.

How do you get there, and is Andorra safe?

Link to this answer

Andorra has no airport, so most visitors take a coach from Barcelona or Toulouse, or fly to Andorra–La Seu just across the Spanish border. The FCDO describes street crime as rare but advises keeping valuables split and drinks in sight. Hotels must register guests with the police, so carry your passport.

From Barcelona, Andorra Direct Bus’s timetable lists departures from Barcelona Airport T1 at 7:30am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5:30pm, 8pm and 11pm. Andorra Turisme says Andorra–La Seu airport has commercial flights by Air Nostrum to Madrid and Palma de Mallorca.

The FCDO notes that Andorra is not in the Schengen area but can only be reached through France or Spain, so your passport must meet Schengen rules. Its safety page warns that drinking alcohol in the street is illegal and that drug laws are zero-tolerance.

How should you book a stay in Andorra la Vella?

Link to this answer

Choose the area by season first: the capital or Escaldes for shopping, museums and evenings, a slope-side village for skiing. Then check the walk to your bus stop, parking if you drive, and the tourist tax of €1 to €3 per person per night for the first seven nights, charged separately on the invoice.

Tax rates come from Law 19/2022: €3 in five-star hotels, €2 in four-star hotels and tourist flats, €1.50 in two- and three-star hotels and €1 elsewhere, with under-16s exempt. A higher high-season rate was proposed in 2026 but had not been adopted when we checked.
