When is the best time to visit Athens?

The best time to visit Athens is mid-April to early June or mid-September to October. Coastal highs average 20–25°C in spring and 24–29°C in autumn, the Acropolis keeps long daylight hours, and you sidestep the July and August heat that has forced the culture ministry to shut the site at midday.

Athens is an open-air city of marble and rock, so heat shapes a visit more than rain does. The Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and Kerameikos are exposed hillside sites with little shade, and the Hellenic National Meteorological Service’s 1991–2020 normals for Elliniko put average July and August highs at 33°C, with nights around 23–24°C. Rain is concentrated between October and March: the HNMS series published by the World Meteorological Organization shows 69.1 mm in December against 5.8 mm in July.

The calendar matters as much as the climate. State sites close on Orthodox Easter Sunday, 1 May and at Christmas, open free on a handful of days, and switch to shorter winter hours in November. We checked every figure on 16 October 2026 against primary sources: HNMS and WMO climate data, the Greek Ministry of Culture’s official site pages, the museums’ own websites, OASA, the city’s This is Athens guide, the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the UK Foreign Office. We do not quote hotel prices; where demand rises we say so in words and explain why.

What is the weather like in Athens month by month?

Athens is hot and almost rainless from June to September, mild and showery from November to March, with April, May and October in between. The table pairs HNMS 1991–2020 temperature normals for coastal Elliniko with the HNMS rainfall series published by the WMO, plus the Acropolis opening hours for each month.

Temperatures are mean daily highs and lows from the HNMS climate data page for Elliniko, a station on the coast south of the centre, so treat them as a baseline rather than a promise. Rainfall totals and rain days are the 1955–1997 HNMS averages that the WMO World Weather Information Service publishes for Athens. Opening hours are those the Ministry of Culture lists for the Acropolis: 08:00–20:00 in summer and 08:00–17:00 in winter, with closing times stepping down through September and October.

Averages hide extremes. On 8 July 2025, with Athens forecast to reach 38°C, the ministry closed the Acropolis until 17:00, so build slack into any July or August plan. In winter the reverse applies: the site still opens at 08:00, but last entry is 16:30.

Is spring a good time to visit Athens?

Yes. April and May are the most comfortable months for walking the ancient centre: HNMS normals put average highs at 20°C and 25°C, rain is fading, and the Acropolis stays open until 20:00. The one trap is Orthodox Easter, when state sites close on Easter Sunday and keep short hours on Good Friday and Holy Saturday.

Orthodox Easter moves each year, falling in April or early May, so check the date for your year before you book. The ministry’s Acropolis page says all state sites, monuments and museums close on Easter Sunday and on 1 May, and open 12:00–17:00 on Good Friday and 08:30–15:30 on Holy Saturday. The Acropolis Museum keeps its own Easter hours: 12:00–18:00 on Good Friday and 09:00–15:00 on Holy Saturday, closed on Easter Sunday.

Spring also brings two free-entry days at state sites, 18 April (International Monuments Day) and 18 May (International Museums Day), both listed on the Acropolis page. They suit budget travellers who can arrive at opening; if you prefer a calmer visit, pick another day. Note that 25 March, Greek Independence Day, is a closure day for the Acropolis, while the Acropolis Museum lists it as a free-admission day.

Spring is a strong season for Delphi, too. The sanctuary switches to summer hours on 1 April, opening 08:00–20:00, and This is Athens recommends visiting off-season or first thing in the morning in summer. Plan the trip with best day trips from Athens.

How hot does Athens get in summer, and do sites close?

Very hot. HNMS normals give July and August average highs of 33°C at the coast, and heatwaves push well past that. The culture ministry has closed the Acropolis from midday until 17:00 on extreme days, including in July 2025, so plan summer sightseeing around opening time and the evening.

Protothema reported a noon-to-17:00 closure on 17 July 2024 after a forecast of high temperatures, and on 8 July 2025 Al Jazeera reported that the ministry shut the site until 17:00, citing the safety of workers and visitors, with Athens forecast to hit 38°C. Closures are announced at short notice, so check the official Acropolis page on the morning of your visit.

Plan around the heat rather than fighting it. Take the first Acropolis slot at 08:00, spend the hottest hours indoors at the Acropolis Museum, which stays open until 20:00 from Tuesday to Sunday in summer and until 22:00 on Fridays, and save neighbourhood walks for after dark. The ministry’s Delphi page asks summer visitors to bring cool drinking water, a hat and light-coloured clothing that covers the limbs; the same advice suits the Acropolis, where the operating rules list consuming food or beverages among prohibited acts.

Summer is also wildfire season. The FCDO warns of a high risk of wildfires from April to October and advises registering your phone for emergency alerts and calling 112 in an emergency. Fires can reach cultural events: on 31 July 2026 the Athens Epidaurus Festival cancelled a performance at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on the authorities’ instructions because of ongoing wildfires. Is September or October better for visiting Athens?

Both are excellent, with different trade-offs. September keeps summer warmth, with an HNMS average high of 29°C and little rain, while October cools to 24°C but gets wetter and shorter: the Acropolis closes at 18:30 in early October and 18:00 from the 16th. Choose September for swimming, October for walking.

Daylight drives the autumn timetable. The Acropolis closes at 19:30 from 1 to 15 September, 19:00 from 16 to 30 September, 18:30 from 1 to 15 October and 18:00 from 16 to 31 October, with last entry 30 minutes earlier, before switching to winter hours. Rain rises sharply in October: the WMO-published HNMS averages give 52.6 mm, against 13.9 mm in September.

Two autumn dates bring free entry to state sites: the last weekend of September, European Heritage Days, and 28 October, both listed on the ministry’s Acropolis page; This is Athens lists 28 October as the Oxi Day national holiday. In 2027 the heritage weekend falls on 25–26 September. The Athens Epidaurus Festival also runs an autumn strand: its October 2026 programme put theatre at Peiraios 260 and a philosophical walk through the Ancient Agora.

Autumn is a good time for island days because the Saronic ferries run year-round. Is winter a good time to visit Athens?

Winter suits museum-led trips if you accept rain and short days. HNMS normals give January highs of 14°C and lows of 7°C, December is the wettest month in the HNMS series, and the Acropolis runs 08:00–17:00. Several state museums and sites add free entry on the first and third Sundays from November to March.

Check each venue, because winter rules differ. The National Archaeological Museum ran shorter winter hours in 2025–26, 08:30–15:30 from Wednesday to Monday and 13:00–20:00 on Tuesdays, and offers free entry on the first and third Sundays from 1 November to 31 March; Delphi and Sounion list the same Sundays. The Acropolis page does not include those Sundays in its free-admission list, so budget for a full ticket there.

The Acropolis Museum keeps longer winter hours than most: 09:00–17:00 from Monday to Thursday, 09:00–22:00 on Fridays and 09:00–20:00 at weekends, with 09:00–15:00 on 24 and 31 December. Christmas closures are firm, with state sites shut on 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Winter daylight also shortens day trips: Delphi closes at 15:30 from November to March.

November has one big crowd event. The Athens Marathon ran over the weekend of 7–8 November in 2026, finishing in the marble Panathenaic Stadium, with runners from around the world. Which dates change crowds and prices in Athens?

Fixed dates move Athens more than the weather does. Free-entry days make the state sites cheaper, national and religious holidays close them, and the November marathon weekend brings runners from around the world. Check the dates below against your trip before you pay for a non-refundable room.

Site rules come from the Ministry of Culture’s Acropolis page, public holidays from This is Athens and politically significant dates from the FCDO, which notes that demonstrations often gather around Syntagma Square and that strikes can disrupt buses, trains and ferries at short notice.

Prices follow demand rather than the thermometer, and we do not publish rates we cannot verify. One predictable extra applies to every stay: Greece charges a per-room, per-night climate crisis resilience fee that is higher from April to October. Greek City Times reported the 2025 rates as €2 to €15 a night for one- to five-star hotels and €8 for short-term rentals in that season, against €0.50 to €4 and €2 from November to March, charged on departure.

When should different travellers go to Athens?

First-timers who want the Acropolis, the big museums and one island day should aim for late April to early June or mid-September to mid-October. Beach-and-ruins trips suit June or September, museum-led budget trips suit November to March, and runners should target the November marathon weekend.

Families with young children should weigh the summer heat and the exposed climb most heavily; spring and autumn half-terms are kinder than July. Travellers with limited mobility should know the Acropolis has had a lift since 2020, reached by a separate 350 m route north of the main entrance, but the ministry says the service is unavailable in severe weather or strong winds and asks visitors to contact the guards’ office an hour ahead. How far ahead should you book Acropolis tickets and rooms?

Book your Acropolis entry as soon as your dates are firm, because tickets are sold for hourly time slots under a daily cap, and the early slots are the ones worth having in warm months. Book rooms in the historic centre early for spring and autumn, and keep free cancellation while plans settle.

The cap dates from 2023, when Culture Minister Lina Mendoni announced a maximum of 20,000 visitors a day, individuals and groups combined, split into hourly zones between 08:00 and 20:00. Tickets cost €30 (€15 reduced) and are sold at the site and through the ministry’s official e-ticketing service, Hellenic Heritage, according to the Acropolis page. The Acropolis Museum warns that a fraudulent copycat site ending in .org has taken money for fake tickets; its own site ends in .gr.

Rooms in the centre are a fixed pool for now. To Vima reported on 7 September 2026 that new short-term rental registration numbers will stay suspended until 31 December 2027 in Athens’ first, second and third municipal districts, which include Plaka, Kolonaki, Koukaki, Syntagma, Monastiraki and Exarchia. Existing listings carry on, but no new apartments can join the market there, which is one more reason to book central stays early.

Arrival logistics are worth checking too. At the time of writing, This is Athens reports evening works on metro Line 3 from Sunday to Thursday, with airport trains running only from Agia Paraskevi after 21:40 and a replacement X20 bus, and lists flat taxi fares from the airport of €40 to the centre from 05:00 to midnight and €55 overnight. So when should you go to Athens?

Go in the second half of May or the second half of September if you can choose freely. Both windows pair dry, warm weather with Acropolis hours that run into the evening, while avoiding the July and August heat peak and the wettest winter months. Early October and late April are the next best options.

Late May gives average highs of 25°C and late September 29°C on the HNMS normals, with 6.2 and 3.3 average rain days in those months in the WMO-published series. Late September adds the free European Heritage Days weekend at state sites, and late May is always clear of the Orthodox Easter closures.

If you can only travel in July or August, go anyway but plan like a resident: ruins at 08:00, museums at midday, neighbourhoods after dark, and a ferry to Aegina or Hydra on the hottest day.
