When is the best time to visit Berlin?

May, June and September suit most visitors: the DWD’s Tempelhof averages put mean temperatures at 14.8°C to 18.1°C, with more than 160 hours of sunshine a month. Choose late November to December for Christmas markets and February for the Berlinale. Book early, or avoid, ITB in March and marathon weekend in September.

Berlin’s climate is continental and fairly dry. The German Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals for Berlin-Tempelhof, at 47.7 metres, give a mean of 1.2°C in January and 20.2°C in July, 572mm of rain a year and 1,736 hours of sunshine (DWD temperature, rain, sunshine, station list). The real swing is light: July has more than five times December’s sunshine.

Summers are getting hotter. The DWD says Berlin averaged 20.0°C in summer 2026 and that Tempelhof set a new capital-city record of 39.9°C on 27 June (DWD). That makes late spring and September the comfortable windows for long days on foot.

What is Berlin’s weather like month by month?

Mean temperatures run from 1.2°C in January to 20.2°C in July. July is also the wettest month, with 71.7mm, while April is the driest, with 29.3mm. Sunshine climbs from 41 hours in December to 237 in July, and frost is likely on about half the days from December to February.

Three things stand out. Summer rain comes in short, heavy bursts, which is why July is both the warmest and the wettest month. Hot days of 30°C or more are still uncommon in the averages, 12.7 a year, mostly in July and August (DWD). And winter is dark rather than snowy, with 67.6 frost days a year but under two hours of sunshine a day in December.

Pack layers in every season: even in May and September, evenings fall well below the daytime highs that the monthly means hide.

Is spring a good time to visit Berlin?

Yes, from mid-April. April is the driest month and May brings 224 hours of sunshine and a 14.8°C mean, good for cycling and long walks. March is still cold, with 10.6 frost days, and ITB fills hotels from 16 to 18 March 2027. The Karneval der Kulturen takes over Kreuzberg at Pentecost.

The DWD’s Tempelhof normals show spring warming fast: from a 5.2°C mean in March to 10.4°C in April and 14.8°C in May, while frost days fall from 10.6 to none (DWD). April’s 29.3mm makes it the driest month of the year (DWD).

Messe Berlin’s ITB travel trade show runs from 16 to 18 March 2027 (ITB), so book refundable rooms early for that week. berlin.de lists the Karneval der Kulturen for 14 to 17 May 2027, over the Pentecost weekend, when Pentecost Sunday falls on 16 May (berlin.de).

Museum lovers should note a date at the end of spring: the Staatliche Museen say the Pergamonmuseum’s renovated north wing and central building, including the Pergamon Altar, reopen on 4 June 2027 (SMB). Expect queues in the first weeks.

What is Berlin like in summer?

Warm, long and lively, with July averaging a 20.2°C mean and 15.5 days of 25°C or more. But it is also the wettest season, with sudden storms, and recent summers have broken records: Tempelhof reached 39.9°C on 27 June 2026. Pride, open-air concerts and lakeside days define the season.

The DWD’s summer 2026 summary records a Berlin mean of 20.0°C and about 756 hours of sunshine, 14% above normal, while rainfall reached only 81% of average. Germany as a whole averaged about 22 days of 30°C or more that summer (DWD), far above Tempelhof’s long-term norm of 12.7 a year (DWD).

berlin.de’s yearly overview lists the Fête de la Musique in June and the Christopher Street Day parade in July 2027, without fixed dates yet (berlin.de). The UK government notes that in July 2026 one person was killed and 29 injured when a vehicle drove into crowds at Christopher Street Day (FCDO), so stay aware at big gatherings.

In heat, plan museums for the afternoon and outdoor sites for the morning. Museum Island’s state museums open from 10am to 6pm from Tuesday to Sunday (SMB), and the Topography of Terror stays open to 8pm every day (Topography of Terror). The Memorial to the Murdered Jews closed its Information Centre early on two very hot days in June 2026 (Stiftung Denkmal), so check before you go.

Should you visit Berlin in autumn?

September is the best month of autumn, with a 15.2°C mean and 167 hours of sunshine, but IFA on 3–7 September and the marathon on 26 September 2027 fill hotels. October is cooler but brings the Festival of Lights, and November turns dark quickly, with 55 hours of sunshine, before the Christmas markets open.

The DWD’s normals put October at a 10.2°C mean and November at 5.4°C, with sunshine falling from 115 hours to 55 (DWD). Frost returns in November, with 7.7 frost days on average (DWD).

IFA, the consumer-electronics fair, runs at Messe Berlin from 3 to 7 September 2027 (IFA), and visitBerlin lists the Berlin Marathon for 26 September 2027, with roads closed in Tiergarten and Mitte (visitBerlin). The Festival of Lights ran from 9 to 18 October 2026, with projections from 7pm to 11pm (Festival of Lights); check its site for 2027 dates.

Note maintenance closures as well: the Reichstag dome closes from 19 to 30 October 2026 for cleaning, though its roof terrace stays open (Bundestag). On 9 November, the anniversary of the fall of the Wall, the Berlin Wall Memorial’s centres open from 10am to 6pm (Berlin Wall Memorial).

Is winter a good time to visit Berlin?

Yes, if Christmas markets, museums and the Berlinale appeal more than daylight. Tempelhof averages 41 hours of sunshine in December and 16.8 frost days in January. Most markets run from 23 November 2026, some to early January, and the Berlinale runs from 10 to 21 February 2027, with two public audience days.

visitBerlin lists the 2026 markets: the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt from 23 November to 31 December, Charlottenburg Palace to 27 December, the Rotes Rathaus and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church to 3 January 2027, and the winter market at the Humboldt Forum from 18 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (visitBerlin). The UK government lists markets among possible terrorist targets in Germany (FCDO).

The 77th Berlinale runs from 10 to 21 February 2027, opening a day earlier than usual, with the awards on Friday 19 February and the festival’s first two audience days on 20 and 21 February (Berlinale). Expect higher demand in Mitte and around Potsdamer Platz that fortnight.

Plan for holiday closures. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews’ Information Centre closes from 24 to 26 December (Stiftung Denkmal), the Reichstag dome on 24 December and from 4pm on 31 December (Bundestag), and the Bernauer Straße centres on 24, 25 and 31 December (Berlin Wall Memorial).

Which Berlin events change prices and crowds?

The biggest pressure points are the Berlinale in February, ITB in March, IFA and the marathon in September, Christmas market weekends and New Year’s Eve. Karneval der Kulturen and Pride weekends fill central districts too. Book refundable rooms early for those dates and check the City Tax in the total.

What costs and closures should you plan around in each season?

Every stay adds Berlin’s City Tax of 7.5% of the net room price, and transport costs €4.00 for an AB single in 2026. Museum Island closes on Mondays all year, the Pergamonmuseum until 4 June 2027, and the Reichstag dome for maintenance from 19 to 30 October 2026. Christmas brings short closures everywhere.

Service Berlin confirms the 7.5% City Tax rate (Service Berlin). The VBB’s 2026 fares put an AB 24-hour ticket at €11.20 and an ABC single, needed from BER airport, at €5.00, and 7-day tickets are no longer sold (VBB, VBB press release).

Which month suits your kind of Berlin trip?

First-timers should aim for May, June or September. Film fans pick February for the Berlinale, Christmas lovers late November to mid-December, and museum lovers can come any time outside Mondays, ideally after the Pergamon reopens in June 2027. Budget travellers should look at January and early March, avoiding fair weeks.

So when should you visit Berlin?

Go in May or September for the best balance of warmth, light and calm, or June 2027 to see the reopened Pergamonmuseum. Choose December for Christmas markets and February for the Berlinale. Summer is lively but increasingly hot and stormy. Whatever the month, avoid Monday museum days and check the trade-fair calendar.

If your dates are flexible, the strongest single choice is late May to mid-June on weekdays: the DWD averages give 224 to 230 hours of sunshine and means of 15°C to 18°C (DWD, temperature), the parks are at their best, and from 4 June 2027 the Pergamon Altar is back on view (SMB).
