Desk-researched guide, checked 16 October 2026; not a personally tested trip. Climate figures are the Italian Air Force’s 1971–2000 station normals, the latest published for Bologna, and recent summers have run hotter. 2027 dates are included only where organisers had published them.

Best time to visit Bologna by month: Air Force climate normals, winter fog, the record 2026 summer, flood risk, and 2027 trade-fair dates that fill hotels.

Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Bologna?

Link to this answer

The best time to visit Bologna is from late April to early June or from mid-September to October. Highs of 18–27°C suit long days under the porticoes and the walk up to San Luca. July and August are now very hot, December and January cold and foggy, and big trade fairs can fill hotels in any season.

Bologna sits inland at the southern edge of the Po Valley, so its winters are far colder than those of Italy’s southern coasts. The Italian Air Force’s normals for Bologna Borgo Panigale airport give a January average of 6.0°C by day and −0.5°C at night, against 13.0°C by day in Naples, while July reaches 30.4°C (WMO World Weather Information Service: Bologna, Naples).

This guide uses those official normals for every climate figure, the Comune di Bologna’s statistics office for the 2026 summer, and organisers’ pages for fairs and festivals, all checked on 16 October 2026. Where a 2027 date had not been published, we say so rather than guess.

Once you have dates, choose a base in where to stay in Bologna, pace the visit with the Bologna 3-day itinerary or the 7-day plan, and shortlist sights from things to do in Bologna.

What is Bologna’s weather like month by month?

Link to this answer

Bologna has cold, foggy winters and hot, humid summers. Borgo Panigale airport averages a 6.0°C high and a −0.5°C low in January, and a 30.4°C high in July. Rain is spread through the year, about 670mm in total, with April and October the wettest months and January the driest.

The table uses the Aeronautica Militare’s 1971–2000 normals for Bologna Borgo Panigale, the airport station 37m above sea level, published on the WMO World Weather Information Service and in the Air Force’s climate atlas sheet for the station. Rainy days are days with more than 1mm; fog days are days with fog reported at the station. These are the latest official station normals we could find for Bologna.

Treat the summer columns as conservative. The Comune di Bologna’s statistics office reported that the city’s average daily maximum in summer 2026 ran 3.7°C above the 1991–2020 average, and nationally the Air Force called it Italy’s hottest summer since its records began in 1961 (I numeri di Bologna, Meteo Aeronautica Militare).

The atlas counts an average of 18.8 days of 30°C or more in July and 16.9 in August, against 6.6 in June and 2.7 in September. At the other end, January averages 16.6 nights at or below freezing and December 13.6, and the station’s record low is −17.0°C, set in January 1979 (Aeronautica Militare).

How cold and foggy is Bologna in winter?

Link to this answer

Cold by Italian standards and often grey. January averages a 6°C high, about 17 frosty nights and 17 foggy days at the airport station. Winter still works for a food-and-museum break, because 62km of porticoes keep you dry and the big exhibitions run into spring, but save the San Luca walk for a clear day.

Fog is the Po Valley speciality. The Air Force atlas records an average of 16.7 foggy days in January, 13.2 in December, 10.5 in November and 10.4 in February at Borgo Panigale, about 70 a year in total, against fewer than one a month from June to August (Aeronautica Militare). A foggy morning can still clear by afternoon, so keep viewpoints flexible.

Bologna’s porticoes, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021, cover a total of 62km (UNESCO), so most of the centre can be walked under cover. The 2026–27 exhibition season helps too: “From Gaudí to Picasso” runs at Palazzo Albergati to 29 March 2027, “Tutankhamun” at Palazzo Belloni to 2 May 2027, and an Elliott Erwitt show at the Museo Civico Archeologico to 28 February 2027 (Bologna Welcome).

December is Bologna’s festive month. The ancient Santa Lucia fair fills Strada Maggiore from 6 November to 27 December 2026, the Porta Galliera market runs from 19 November to 6 January 2027, and an Epiphany fair takes over Via Indipendenza, Via Rizzoli and Via Ugo Bassi from 2 to 6 January 2027 (Bologna Welcome).

How hot does Bologna get in summer?

Link to this answer

Very hot in recent years. The 1971–2000 normals give a July high of 30.4°C, but in summer 2026 the city recorded 82 days above 30°C and 83 tropical nights above 20°C across June, July and August. Plan sightseeing for mornings and evenings, and choose accommodation with air conditioning.

Those 2026 figures come from the Comune di Bologna’s statistics office, which counts “hot days” as maximums above 30°C and “tropical nights” as minimums above 20°C. The same report put average maximums 3.7°C and average minimums 7.8°C above the 1991–2020 baseline, and noted that July brought 91.5mm of rain in only five days (I numeri di Bologna). Summer storms can be short and heavy.

Summer evenings are when the city comes alive. Bologna Estate, the city’s summer programme, ran from 15 May to 27 September in 2026 (Bologna Estate). The free outdoor cinema “Sotto le stelle del cinema” filled Piazza Maggiore from 15 June to 14 August 2026, and the archive film festival Il Cinema Ritrovato returns from 19 to 27 June 2027 (Cineteca di Bologna, Il Cinema Ritrovato).

Shade matters. The porticoes keep most central walks out of the sun, but the 3.5km portico climb to the San Luca sanctuary from Porta Saragozza is best started early (Bologna Welcome). The UK government also warns that wildfires are a risk during Italy’s extended summer months (FCDO), relevant if you head into the Apennine hills.

Why are spring and autumn the sweet spots?

Link to this answer

Because the porticoes, markets and hills are at their best without summer heat or winter fog. May averages 23.0°C and September 25.4°C. April and October are the wettest months, at 72–74mm, but rain falls on only seven or eight days. Autumn adds the jazz festival, truffle fairs in the hills and the patron-saint day.

Spring warms quickly: highs climb from 14.2°C in March to 23.0°C in May, and fog days drop from almost six in March to two in May (Aeronautica Militare). Easter falls on 28 March 2027, with Easter Monday a holiday on 29 March (GOV.UK holiday calendar), and the spring trade fairs below add demand on specific weeks.

Autumn has the richer calendar. The Bologna Jazz Festival runs from 13 October to 8 November 2026 (Bologna Welcome), Tartufesta brings white-truffle markets to towns in the Bolognese Apennines from 10 October to 8 November 2026, and Zola Predosa held its “Mortadella, Please!” festival on 9–11 October (Bologna Welcome).

San Petronio, the city’s patron saint, is celebrated on 4 October, when the Archiginnasio library is closed (Archiginnasio). By late October fog starts to return, averaging 5.9 days in the month, so the second half of September and early October are the safest autumn bet for clear views.

Which trade fairs and events should you check before booking?

Link to this answer

Check the big BolognaFiere shows before you book. Arte Fiera runs on 5–7 February 2027, Cosmoprof on 18–21 March, the Children’s Book Fair on 5–8 April and Cersaie from 27 September to 1 October 2027. Each brings international exhibitors to a compact city, so search a week either side if your dates are flexible.

Dates come from the organisers: Arte Fiera, Cosmoprof, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and Cersaie. Cersaie, the ceramics and bathroom show, ran from 21 to 25 September in 2026. We could not open BolognaFiere’s master calendar, so dates for other shows, including the EIMA agricultural machinery fair, are not listed here.

If a fair overlaps your dates, book a refundable room early and compare the total with the tourist tax, which rises with the nightly price. Alternatively, stay in another city on the high-speed line: the fastest Italo trains reach Bologna from Florence in 37 minutes (Italo).

Free events change the atmosphere more than the bill. The summer cinema fills Piazza Maggiore on most evenings from mid-June to mid-August, the Christmas fairs run under the porticoes from November, and San Petronio’s day on 4 October closes the Archiginnasio library.

What weather risks should you plan for in Bologna?

Link to this answer

Heavy rain, heat and fog are the risks to plan for. Floods hit Bologna and its province in May 2023 and October 2024, and the steep Bregoli footpath to San Luca was still unusable in late 2025. Summer storms can be intense, and the UK government warns that Italian transport strikes are often called at short notice.

The Comune describes the May 2023 floods as hitting Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Modena and other provinces, and has set up funds for victims of the October 2024 flood in the metropolitan area (Comune di Bologna 2023, 2024). Landslide repairs in the hills, including Via Monte Albano near San Luca, were completed on 13 March 2026 (Comune di Bologna).

Bologna Welcome noted in October 2025 that the Bregoli path up to San Luca from Parco della Chiusa was unusable after the floods, while the main portico and the Via Panoramica route remain options (Bologna Welcome). The FCDO adds that heavy rainfall is common in winter and can cause local flooding (FCDO).

Strikes are the other planning risk. The FCDO says transport strikes are often called at short notice, and TPER’s timetables state that buses are guaranteed during strikes from the start of service to 8.30am and from 4.30pm to 7.30pm (TPER line 58 timetable). Keep a walking plan for the centre and leave buffer time for flights.

What should you budget for tax and getting in from the airport?

Link to this answer

Bologna’s tourist tax depends on the nightly price per person: €4 up to €30.99, €5.80 up to €70.99, €6.50 up to €120.99 and €7 above that, for at most five consecutive nights. Under-14s are exempt. From the airport, the Marconi Express monorail reaches Centrale station in seven minutes for €12.80 one way.

The Comune di Bologna tax page adds a flat €2.80 per night for hostels and campsites, and 10.5% of the price, capped at €7 per person per night, for short lets booked through intermediaries or portals. Compare totals including tax, and note that a higher nightly price per person moves a booking into a higher band.

The Marconi Express runs from 5.40am to midnight, about every 7 minutes at peak times and every 15 minutes otherwise, stopping at Lazzaretto in both directions (timetable). A return costs €23.30 (fares). You can tap a contactless card or phone at the gates, but you must tap out too, or the full €12.80 is charged (Pay&Go). Between midnight and 5.40am, bus Q links the airport and the station.

Non-EU visitors should expect the EU’s Entry/Exit System at the border; the UK government says it is now being implemented across the Schengen area (FCDO entry requirements).

Which month suits which kind of Bologna trip?

Link to this answer

First-timers should aim for May, June or September. Christmas-market fans want late November to mid-December; film lovers the free summer screenings in Piazza Maggiore; food lovers any month outside big fairs. Heat-sensitive travellers should skip July and August, and anyone who wants views from San Luca should avoid the foggiest months, December and January.

Bologna is also a rail hub, which changes the timing question. Italo’s fastest trains reach Florence in 37 minutes, Milan in 1 hour 2 minutes and Venice in 1 hour 19 minutes (Florence, Milan, Venice). If you are combining cities, compare Florence, Venice and Milan timing too.

Families should weigh heat against fog: June and September are kindest. The former FICO food park, now Grand Tour Italia, opens Thursday to Sunday with free entry (Grand Tour Italia), a useful option on a wet weekend. Food-focused travellers can pair a visit with autumn truffle season in the hills.

  • Best overall: late April to early June, mid-September to October
  • Christmas fairs: 6 November to 27 December 2026 on Strada Maggiore
  • Free outdoor cinema: mid-June to mid-August
  • Avoid for heat: July and August
  • Avoid for fog: December and January
  • Check before booking: Arte Fiera, Cosmoprof, Children’s Book Fair, Cersaie
