When is the best time to visit Cartagena?
Link to this answerFor most visitors, December to April is the best time to visit Cartagena. IDEAM’s 1991–2020 averages show almost no rain from January to March, while temperatures barely change all year. January is packed with festivals, so book early; late February to mid-March gives the same dry weather with no major festival in our calendar.
Cartagena’s climate is simpler than most cities’: it is hot every month, and the real variable is rain. At Rafael Núñez airport, IDEAM’s 1991–2020 normals give an average of 0.5mm in January and 0.3mm in February, against 236.5mm in October (IDEAM). Average daily highs move only between 31.1°C and 32.3°C across the year.
This guide uses those IDEAM figures for every rain and temperature number, Colombia Travel and the organisers for events, and the FCDO and the US National Hurricane Center for safety and storm season, all checked on 16 October 2026. Where an organiser had not published 2027 dates, we leave the event out rather than guess.
Once you have dates, choose a base with where to stay in Cartagena, then pace the trip with the Cartagena 3-day itinerary or the 7-day plan. The Cartagena destination hub has the wider overview.
What is Cartagena’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerThe table shows IDEAM’s 1991–2020 averages for Rafael Núñez airport. Highs stay between 31°C and 32°C all year and average lows never drop below 24°C. Rain makes the difference: under 4mm a month from January to March, a jump in May, and a peak of 236mm over about 12 rainy days in October.
Figures come from IDEAM’s standard 1991–2020 climate normals for the Aeropuerto Rafael Núñez station (IDEAM). “Rain days” counts days with at least 1mm. The verdict column is our reading of those numbers alongside the event calendar; it is not a forecast.
Colombia Travel describes the same pattern for the Caribbean coast: rainy periods between May and November, often in the afternoons, and sunnier weather from December to April (Colombia Travel). The national tourism board recommends late November to late April as the drier, fresher season for Cartagena (Colombia Travel).

Why is December to April the best season for most travellers?
Link to this answerBecause it is reliably dry. IDEAM records an average of just 0.5mm of rain in January, 0.3mm in February and 3.2mm in March, with fewer than one rainy day a month. That makes island boat days, rampart sunsets and long walks easy to plan, though you trade the weather for higher demand and prices.
January to March is the driest stretch of the year at the airport station, with April still light at 18.6mm (IDEAM). December is the shoulder: rain falls to 44.7mm on average over 2.6 rainy days, far fewer than in November. IDEAM’s sunshine records for the same station peak in January and are lowest in September and October.
The flip side is cost and company. Colombia Travel notes that the rainy periods can bring more affordable prices (Colombia Travel), which implies the reverse in the dry months. January also holds two big cultural events, the music festival and the Hay Festival, so central hotels can fill early.
For the best balance, aim for February or the first half of March: still essentially rainless, after the January festivals and before the April film festival. Our Cartagena 7-day itinerary assumes this kind of settled weather for its island and Barú days.
Is it worth visiting Cartagena in the rainy season?
Link to this answerYes, if you are flexible. From May to September, IDEAM averages seven to ten rainy days a month, and Colombia Travel says coastal rain tends to fall in the afternoons, so mornings usually stay usable. October is the exception: 236.5mm over about 12 rainy days makes it the month to avoid if island trips matter.
The wet season builds in steps. May jumps to 117.4mm, June eases slightly to 92.5mm, then July to September sit between 121mm and 133mm before October peaks and November stays wet at 178.3mm (IDEAM). Colombia Travel adds that even in the rainy months, days are often clear (Colombia Travel).
A useful long-term detail: IDEAM’s comparison tables show November has become wetter, rising from 122.1mm in 1961–1990 to 178.3mm in 1991–2020, while the annual total rose by about 51mm. Average daily highs are 0.5°C to 0.8°C warmer than in 1971–2000, depending on the month (IDEAM). Treat older advice that November is already dry with caution.
In the wet season, keep museums and shaded courtyards for the afternoon and put walking and boat trips in the morning. The Museo Histórico de Cartagena in the Palace of the Inquisition opens every day, with shorter hours on Sundays and holidays, which makes it a dependable rain stop (MUHCA).
How hot is Cartagena, and when is the heat hardest?
Link to this answerHot all year. IDEAM’s average daily highs range only from 31.1°C in January to 32.3°C in June, and average lows from 24.0°C in January to 26.1°C in May and June. January and February feel easiest, which fits Colombia Travel’s description of a drier, fresher season. Plan walks for early morning and late afternoon.
Because temperatures vary so little, the choice is less about heat than about how much rain you will tolerate. Colombia Travel gives Cartagena an average temperature of 27°C through the year and describes typical days on the coast as mostly sunny, at 28°C to 32°C (Colombia Travel, weather).
The walled city is best walked early. Colombia Travel suggests at least two hours for the historic centre (Colombia Travel); split that into a morning loop and a sunset walk on the walls, and spend the hottest hours indoors or in shade. Castillo San Felipe stands on San Lázaro hill outside the walls, so go first thing.
Pack for sun rather than cold: light, breathable clothes, a hat and high-factor sunscreen. Colombia Travel’s Barú page reminds visitors to bring sunglasses and sunblock and to drink water often (Colombia Travel).
Which festivals and events affect Cartagena’s prices and crowds?
Link to this answerJanuary is the busiest cultural month, with the Cartagena Music Festival from 9 to 17 January 2027 and the Hay Festival from 28 to 31 January 2027. The FICCI film festival runs from 6 to 11 April 2027. In November, the Independence festivities peak with the grand parade on 12 November 2026.
The Cartagena Music Festival holds its 2027 edition from 9 to 17 January, with concerts in churches, theatres, plazas and heritage hotels. The Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias follows from 28 to 31 January 2027. Both use venues in and around the walled city, so if you are going for either, book a central room early.
The FICCI film festival holds its 66th edition from 6 to 11 April 2027, and Colombia Travel notes that it includes free screenings (Colombia Travel). The city’s 2026 Independence programme runs from 2 October to 16 November, with the Gran Desfile de Independencia on Avenida Santander on Thursday 12 November, a nautical festival on 13 and 14 November and the Cabildo de Getsemaní on 15 November (IPCC).
Cruise calls shape daytime crowds in the old town: Colombia Travel says about 200 cruise ships dock in Cartagena in high season (Colombia Travel). On busy port days, visit the main plazas early or late and keep museum visits for the middle of the day.
| Event | Dates | What it means for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Cartagena Music Festival | 9–17 Jan 2027 | Concerts across the historic centre; book central rooms early |
| Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias | 28–31 Jan 2027 | Literary events in and around the walled city |
| FICCI film festival (66th edition) | 6–11 Apr 2027 | Screenings around the city, some free |
| Independence festivities programme | 2 Oct–16 Nov 2026 | Weeks of cultural events, busiest in mid-November |
| Gran Desfile de Independencia | 12 Nov 2026, 10am–12pm | Parade on Avenida Santander; plan transport around it |
| Festival Náutico de la Independencia | 13–14 Nov 2026 | Boat events in the bay; check island-trip timings |
| Cabildo de Getsemaní | 15 Nov 2026 | Festivity centred on Getsemaní; light sleepers should stay elsewhere |
Do hurricanes and rough seas affect Cartagena?
Link to this answerRarely, but they can. The FCDO says that, although uncommon, hurricanes and tropical storms can affect the Caribbean coast, and the Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November. For Rosario Islands trips, boats return according to port authority rules and sea conditions, so keep island days flexible in the wet months.
The UK Foreign Office’s wording is careful: “Although uncommon, hurricanes and tropical storms can affect the Caribbean coast” (FCDO). The US National Hurricane Center gives the Atlantic season as 1 June to 30 November, with a peak on 10 September and most activity from mid-August to mid-October (NHC).
Island trips are where weather bites. Colombia’s national parks agency says boats to the Corales del Rosario y de San Bernardo park leave between 8am and 10am and return as the port authorities and sea conditions allow (Parques Nacionales). Book these days with free cancellation and avoid the last day of your trip.
Check the FCDO’s Colombia page before you travel. At the time of writing it does not include Cartagena in any area it advises against; its only Bolívar warning covers the southern part of the department (FCDO). Insurance that covers weather disruption is worth having in any month; see best travel insurance.
Who should visit Cartagena when?
Link to this answerFirst-time visitors and beach-and-islands travellers should aim for February to April. Culture lovers should target January for the music festival and Hay Festival, accepting busier streets. Budget travellers who can live with afternoon showers can try May, June or early December. Avoid October if island days are the main point of your trip.
Families tied to school holidays have less choice of month, so the useful lever is the time of day: walls and forts in the morning, pool or museum time after lunch, and the island trip early in the stay so there is a spare day if the sea is rough.
Remote workers and longer stays can use the wet season’s more affordable prices, which Colombia Travel associates with the rainy periods (Colombia Travel). For long stays, our Colombia digital nomad visa guide covers the visa route; British visitors can otherwise stay up to 90 days without a visa (FCDO).
November visitors get the Independence festivities, but IDEAM’s 178.3mm average makes it one of the wettest months, so build in indoor time and keep boat trips flexible (IDEAM).
What should you check before you book flights to Cartagena?
Link to this answerCheck entry rules and the event calendar before paying. British visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa, must show an onward or return ticket and can speed up arrival with the optional Check-MIG form. Then compare your dates with January’s festivals and November’s Independence week, which can affect hotel demand.
The FCDO says the officer on arrival decides your permitted stay, up to 90 days, and that you cannot stay more than 180 days in any 12-month period. The Check-MIG migration form is optional but can speed up entry; submit it between 72 hours and one hour before travel. Colombian authorities recommend at least six months’ passport validity after your planned departure (FCDO entry requirements).
Flights arrive at Rafael Núñez International Airport, which Colombia Travel says has direct services from international airlines (Colombia Travel). Compare total fares including bags, and aim to arrive at least a day before any fixed booking such as a festival ticket or an island boat.
So when should you go to Cartagena?
Link to this answerGo in February or the first half of March for the most reliable dry weather without January’s festival rush. Choose January if the music festival or Hay Festival is your reason to travel. Choose May, June or early December for lower demand and still-workable weather. Leave October for another trip if you want boat days.
Whatever the month, book rooms with free cancellation until flights are confirmed, and compare the final total including taxes and fees. For neighbourhood choice, use where to stay in Cartagena; for a property shortlist with dated guest scores, see our Cartagena hotel comparison.
