Best time to visit San Juan, from NOAA 1991–2020 normals: March is driest, December still has 20 rain days, plus 2027 festival dates and storm-season advice.

Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit San Juan?

Link to this answer

For most visitors, February to early April is the best time to visit San Juan. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals make March the driest month, and the period sits outside the hurricane season. December and January are drier than summer, not dry: expect frequent, mostly light showers. Come in late January for the San Sebastián street festival.

San Juan is warm all year, so the real choice is about rain, storms and crowds. At Luis Muñoz Marín airport, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals give average highs between 28.4°C (83.2°F) in January and 31.8°C (89.2°F) in September, while monthly rainfall ranges from 55mm in March to 187mm in November (NOAA NCEI).

This guide uses that NOAA station for every weather number, the US National Hurricane Center for the storm season, the University of South Florida for sargassum, and organisers, the National Park Service and official calendars for dates, all checked on 16 October 2026. Where a 2027 date had not been published, we say so rather than guess.

Once you have dates, pick a base with where to stay in San Juan, then pace the trip with the San Juan 3-day itinerary or the 7-day plan. The San Juan destination hub has the wider overview.

What is San Juan’s weather like month by month?

The table uses NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for San Juan’s airport. Highs move only from about 28°C to 32°C, so rain decides the season: March is driest at 55mm over 13 rainy days, and November wettest at 187mm over 21. Even the drier months average at least 13 days with measurable rain.

Figures are from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information monthly normals for station RQW00011641, San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín airport (NOAA NCEI). “Rain days” counts days with at least 0.01in (0.25mm) of rain, so a two-minute shower counts. The verdict column is our reading of the numbers and the event calendar, not a forecast.

A second NOAA measure shows how light most winter rain is. Days with at least 1in (25mm) average 0.3 in February and March and 0.6 in January, against 1.8 in November and 1.6 in May. In winter it rains often but lightly; from April to November, heavy downpours become more common.

Is December to April really San Juan’s dry season?

Link to this answer

Drier, not dry. NOAA counts 20.2 days with measurable rain in an average December and 18.4 in January, compared with 13.1 in March. What changes is intensity: heavy-rain days of 25mm or more fall below one a month from December to March. Pack a light rain jacket and keep an indoor back-up for each day.

The idea of a December-to-April dry season is broadly right but easy to overstate. NOAA’s normals give 123mm of rain in December and 103mm in January, more than in June (118mm), while February (66mm) and March (55mm) are genuinely drier (NOAA NCEI). If you want the lowest odds of a washed-out beach day, aim for late February to early April.

The difference shows in heavy downpours. Days with at least 25mm average 0.3 in February and March and 0.9 in December, rising to between 1.1 and 1.8 in every month from April to November (NOAA NCEI). Winter rain tends to arrive as more frequent but lighter showers, which are easier to plan around than the heavier rain of summer and autumn.

Old San Juan’s forts make good use of the drier months. The National Park Service opens San Juan National Historic Site daily from 9am to 5pm, and a $10 pass covers both forts for 24 hours, so you can split visits around a shower (NPS hours, NPS fees). The San Juan 3-day itinerary builds in rainy-day swaps.

How hot does San Juan get, and when is the heat hardest?

Link to this answer

Warm every month and hot from June to October. NOAA’s average highs run from 28.4°C in January to 31.8°C in September, and average lows stay above 22°C all year, peaking at 25.4°C in August. February has the coolest nights. Summer combines the hottest days with more rain, so plan outdoor sightseeing early.

The spread between the coolest and hottest months is small: 3.4°C in average highs (NOAA NCEI). What changes more is the relief after dark, with average lows of about 25°C from June to September against about 22°C from January to March.

Much of a fort visit is outdoors, on walls and open ground. The National Park Service says both forts can be explored every day from 9am to 5pm (NPS), so in summer be at El Morro for opening time, carry water, and keep the early afternoon for indoor stops such as the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in Santurce, which opens Wednesday to Sunday (MAPR).

For a beach-led trip the heat is rarely the main issue; storms and seaweed matter more. Both are covered in the next two sections, and both favour the same answer: if you have a free choice of dates, late winter and spring beat late summer.

When is hurricane season in San Juan, and how risky is it?

Link to this answer

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and the National Hurricane Center puts its peak on 10 September, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. If you travel then, book flexibly, buy insurance that covers weather disruption, and follow official forecasts and local instructions.

Based on 1991–2020, the National Hurricane Center says an average Atlantic season brings 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The first hurricane typically forms in early to mid-August and the first major hurricane in late August or early September (NHC). Those are basin-wide figures, not a count of storms that reach Puerto Rico.

The UK Foreign Office’s USA advice, which also covers Puerto Rico, says hurricanes can affect coastal regions and advises monitoring approaching storms on the National Hurricane Center website (FCDO). It reports that NOAA’s seasonal outlook predicted a below-normal Atlantic season for 2026 (FCDO). A quiet forecast does not rule out a damaging storm, so keep plans flexible until the season ends.

If you travel between June and November, choose free-cancellation rooms, check that your policy covers missed flights and cancelled trips caused by storms, and leave a spare day before flying home. Our best travel insurance guide explains what to look for.

Does sargassum seaweed affect San Juan’s beaches?

Link to this answer

It can, mostly in summer. The University of South Florida’s satellite bulletins show Caribbean sargassum usually builds through spring, peaks around June or July and declines towards November. 2025 was the record year and 2026 the second largest. Its bulletins are regional, so they cannot tell you whether a particular San Juan beach will be affected.

The USF Optical Oceanography Lab’s monthly outlooks tracked 2026 closely. Caribbean sargassum rose from 0.45 million tonnes in December 2025 to 1.7 million in January 2026, a record for January (USF, January 2026). By July the lab called 2026 the second-largest year after 2025, and in September it expected amounts to keep falling until about November (USF, July 2026, September 2026).

The lab warns that its bulletins should not be used to predict conditions at a specific beach (USF). In practice, San Juan is less exposed to a ruined trip than a pure beach resort, because the forts, museums and old town still work when the sand does not. If the beach is the priority, look at recent guest photos in the week before you travel.

Rip currents are the other sea hazard. The National Weather Service office in San Juan publishes a beach forecast, and the NWS advises checking the local beach forecast before you go, talking to the lifeguard and swimming only at beaches with lifeguards (NWS San Juan, NWS rip currents).

Which festivals and holidays affect San Juan’s crowds and prices?

The Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián fill Old San Juan from 21 to 24 January 2027. US holiday weekends add demand: Martin Luther King Jr Day on 18 January and Washington’s Birthday on 15 February 2027, and Thanksgiving on 26 November 2026. The UK Easter weekend runs from 26 to 29 March 2027.

San Juan’s mayor announced the 2027 dates for the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, known as SanSe, in March 2026, after the 2026 edition drew an estimated 1,083,881 people over four days (El Nuevo Día, 12 March 2026). If you want the festival, book an old-town room early; if you do not, avoid that weekend for a quiet first visit.

US federal holidays can push up demand on flights from the mainland. In the 2027 calendar, Martin Luther King Jr Day falls on Monday 18 January, Washington’s Birthday on Monday 15 February and Memorial Day on Monday 31 May; Thanksgiving 2026 is on Thursday 26 November (OPM). The UK’s Easter bank holidays are Good Friday 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March 2027 (GOV.UK).

Classical music fans should watch the Casals Festival: its 2026 edition ran from 23 May to 6 June, and 2027 dates had not been published when we checked (Orquesta Sinfónica de Puerto Rico). The forts close on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (NPS hours).

Who should visit San Juan when?

Link to this answer

Beach-first travellers should aim for February to early April, the driest stretch. Festival lovers should come for SanSe in late January and book early. Families tied to summer holidays can still go, but should expect heat, more rain and hurricane season. November is the wettest month, so avoid it if you can.

History-focused travellers are the most flexible. The forts open every day except three holidays, and indoor stops such as the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico give cover when it rains, so a showery December week still works (NPS hours, MAPR). Thursday evenings at the museum are free from 5pm to 8pm.

Families tied to school holidays have less choice of month, so the useful lever is the time of day: forts at opening time, a pool or museum after lunch, and the beach when the forecast allows. In hurricane season, book refundable rooms and keep the first and last days light.

Nature lovers heading to El Yunque, in Río Grande east of the city, should check the forest’s current entry rules before setting out; when online reservations were dropped in August 2023, entry became first come, first served with a 200-car limit (News is my Business, August 2023). The 7-day itinerary has room for it.

What should you check before booking flights to San Juan?

Check entry rules, the festival and holiday calendar, and your cancellation terms. Puerto Rico is covered by US entry rules, so British visitors need an approved ESTA or a visa. Then compare your dates with SanSe, US long weekends and hurricane season, and book rooms with free cancellation until flights are paid.

The FCDO’s USA travel advice says it also covers Puerto Rico, and that to enter or transit through the US you must have either an ESTA or a visa (FCDO, entry requirements). Our ESTA guide for UK travellers walks through the application.

On the ground, the $10 National Park Service pass covers both forts for 24 hours, children aged 15 and under go free, and the park does not accept cash (NPS fees). US citizens and residents also get free entry on NPS fee-free days, which in 2026 include Veterans Day on 11 November.

For flights, compare fares across several days either side of your preferred week, especially around US holiday weekends, and check the total with bags before you pay.

So when should you go to San Juan?

Link to this answer

Go in February or March for the driest weather and comfortable heat, outside the hurricane and peak sargassum seasons. Choose late January if SanSe is the reason for your trip. December and April are good second choices, with more showers. Leave September to November to flexible travellers with good insurance.

Whatever the month, book rooms with free cancellation until flights are confirmed and compare the final total, including taxes and fees. For neighbourhood choice, use where to stay in San Juan; for property shortlists with dated guest scores, see our San Juan hotel comparison.
