San Juan 7-Day Itinerary: Forts, El Yunque and Culebra

How should you spend 7 days in San Juan?

Spread Old San Juan over two easy days, using the 24-hour fort pass for El Morro one afternoon and San Cristóbal the next morning, then cross to Casa Bacardí. Give day 4 to El Yunque, day 5 to a Culebra or Vieques ferry trip, day 6 to Santurce and the beach, and day 7 to Loíza.

The San Juan 3-day itinerary fits both forts into one day, pairs Casa Bacardí with Santurce’s art museum and leaves one day for the beach or the rainforest. A week lets you slow the old town down, give El Yunque a full day, and add what the short plan cannot: an island day by ferry or small plane, and the Afro-Puerto Rican coast at Loíza.

It is a desk-researched suggested route, not one we have travelled. Fort hours come from the National Park Service, ferry rules from Puerto Rico Ferry, bus routes from the transit authority (ATI), climate figures from NOAA and museum days from the museums, checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. Several official sites blocked our checks, including the US Forest Service and the tourism board, so some details carry a “check before you go”.

What does the 7-day San Juan plan look like at a glance?

Days 1 to 3 stay in and around Old San Juan; days 4 and 5 head east to the rainforest and the islands; days 6 and 7 return to Santurce, the beaches and Loíza near the airport. The art museum closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, so plan day 6 for Wednesday to Sunday, ideally a Thursday.

The table lists each day’s anchor, what to book and the closures that matter. The island day is the hardest to rearrange, because visitors can buy only a limited number of advance ferry seats (Puerto Rico Ferry), so fix it first and build the week around it.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in Santurce opens Wednesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays, Tuesdays and holidays, with free entry on Thursday evenings from 5pm to 8pm (MAPR). The forts open daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day (NPS).

What should you book or check before a week in San Juan?

British visitors need an approved ESTA or a US visa. Then secure ferry seats to Culebra or Vieques online, because visitors cannot rely on the day-of-travel window, and reserve a Casa Bacardí experience. Fort passes are bought on site by card only. Compare hotel totals, since Puerto Rico’s tourism law sets a general 9% room tax.

Puerto Rico Ferry says advance sales for non-residents are limited to its website and app, with a limited number of seats held for advance purchase and the rest sold at the window on the day; all sales are final, though a ticket can be moved to another sailing up to twice, at least an hour before departure (Puerto Rico Ferry). Casa Bacardí recommends reservations, especially on busy days, and limits its experiences to guests aged 18 and over (Casa Bacardí).

The official compilation of Puerto Rico’s 2003 tourism law sets a general room tax of 9%, with a higher rate at hotels with casinos (Government of Puerto Rico), so compare final totals when you book. The National Park Service sells its $10 two-fort pass by card or contactless only (NPS fees).

Days 1 and 2: how do you take Old San Juan slowly?

Keep day 1 to a beach walk near your base and an evening stroll through the old town’s plazas. On day 2, wander the streets in the cooler morning, eat an early lunch, then visit El Morro from about 2pm with the $10 pass, which stays valid for 24 hours and covers San Cristóbal too.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a multilevel fortress rising 140ft (42.67m) above the entrance to San Juan Bay (NPS). The forts open daily from 9am to 5pm (NPS hours), and the $10 adult pass covers both for 24 hours, with children aged 15 and under free (NPS fees). Starting at El Morro in the afternoon means the same receipt still works for San Cristóbal on the morning of day 3.

One older walk is not available: the NPS closed the Paseo del Morro trail beneath the walls until further notice in June 2023 because of a leak in the wall (NPS). Check the park’s alerts on the day for any other closed sections before you plan a loop around the fortifications.

If you land at Luis Muñoz Marín airport with luggage, a taxi is simpler than the bus. ATI’s route 5 runs from the airport to the old town via Santurce every 20 minutes on weekdays, and route 53 follows the beach districts about every 67 minutes, at $0.75 on most routes (ATI).

Day 3: how do you pair San Cristóbal with Casa Bacardí?

Use the second half of your 24-hour pass at Castillo San Cristóbal when it opens at 9am, add the Museo de las Américas in the Cuartel de Ballajá, then take the afternoon ferry from Pier 2 to Cataño for a booked Casa Bacardí experience. The crossing takes about 12 minutes, with a shuttle on to the distillery.

The Museo de las Américas occupies the second floor of the Cuartel de Ballajá and opens Tuesday to Friday from 9am to noon and 1pm to 4pm, and at weekends from 11am to 4pm; adult tickets cost $8. It is a good shaded break between the fort and the ferry.

Puerto Rico Ferry runs San Juan to Cataño sailings from 6am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 11pm at weekends (Puerto Rico Ferry), and describes the crossing as 12 minutes (Puerto Rico Ferry). Casa Bacardí opens daily from 10:30am to 7pm, except on major holidays and during private events, and offers a ferry-and-shuttle connection from Pier 2.

Families with children under 18 can still enter the Casa Bacardí pavilion, shop and food area with an adult, but not the experiences, so they may prefer a second beach afternoon. Back in town, an evening in the old town’s plazas rounds off the history days.

Day 4: how do you spend a full day in El Yunque?

Leave early: when the Forest Service dropped reservations in 2023, entry to the PR-191 recreation corridor became first come, first served from 8am, with the gate closing once 200 cars are inside. Check current trail closures before you go, or book a guided tour that handles access. Fees for El Portal and La Mina are proposed, not yet charged.

In August 2023, News is my Business reported that the Forest Service had ended online reservations for El Yunque’s main corridor, replacing them with first-come entry from 8am, a 5pm closing time and a gate that shuts once 200 vehicles are inside (News is my Business, August 2023). The Forest Service site blocked our checks, so confirm the rules, and which trails are open, before you set out.

In June 2026, Metro Puerto Rico reported that the Forest Service was considering charging for the El Portal visitor centre and the La Mina recreation area, which are currently free: $4 a person, $10 for a three-day pass and $20 for an annual pass; the proposal had not been implemented (Metro, 7 June 2026).

The forest’s best-known stops, including La Coca waterfall and Yokahú Tower, sit along PR-191 (News is my Business). Rain is part of the experience in a rainforest, so pack a light waterproof and grippy shoes, and keep the afternoon flexible. If you want a bioluminescent-bay kayak trip in Fajardo the same evening, choose a licensed tour and check its rules and moon-phase advice before booking.

Day 5: should you take the ferry to Culebra or Vieques?

Yes, if you book early and accept the rules. Ferries from Ceiba take about an hour to Vieques and 90 minutes to Culebra; since May 2026 visitors pay a higher non-resident fare, reported at $11.25 each way. Sales are final and hire cars cannot board. Small planes from Isla Grande airport are the alternative.

Puerto Rico Ferry lists a one-hour crossing from Ceiba to Vieques and an hour and a half to Culebra (Puerto Rico Ferry). It announced that fare increases for non-residents on inter-island routes would take effect on 5 May 2026 (Puerto Rico Ferry), and the Associated Press reported the new one-way fare as $11.25 on both routes, up from $2 and $2.25 (AP via WTOP, 1 April 2026).

Arrive at the Ceiba terminal at least an hour before departure; boarding closes 10 minutes before sailing, each carry-on item on the island routes needs a ticket, and you cannot buy a vehicle ticket for a rental car (Puerto Rico Ferry). That makes the island day a foot-passenger trip: plan on local taxis or walking once you land.

Vieques Air Link runs daily hops between San Juan, Ceiba, Vieques, Culebra and St Thomas, flying from San Juan’s Isla Grande airport, and says most take under 25 minutes (Vieques Air Link). Flying out and taking the ferry back, or staying a night on the island, takes the pressure off the last return sailing.

Days 6 and 7: how do you finish in Santurce, the beaches and Loíza?

Spend day 6 at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in Santurce, ideally a Thursday for free evening entry, with the afternoon on Condado or Ocean Park beach. On day 7, head east past the airport to Piñones and Loíza by car or ATI’s route 45 bus, then fly home from nearby Luis Muñoz Marín.

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico at 299 Avenida de Diego opens Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm, Thursday until 8pm and Sunday from 11am to 5pm, with free entry from 5pm to 8pm on Thursdays. For the beach, check the National Weather Service San Juan beach forecast and swim near a lifeguard where you can (NWS San Juan, NWS rip currents).

ATI’s route 45 runs east from Isla Verde along Avenida Boca de Cangrejos and Carretera 187 to Loíza (ATI), which keeps the last day close to the airport. Allow a generous buffer for the return, because several bus routes run only about hourly.

Two day trips that older itineraries suggest need care in 2026. The Arecibo Observatory’s new science centre opens to the public only on Friday afternoons and Saturdays this autumn, with tickets reserved online at least 24 hours ahead (Arecibo C3). In Ponce, the Museo de Arte de Ponce began restoration works in April 2026 (El Nuevo Día, 28 April 2026), so check its status before planning an art day there.

How should rain, storms and seaweed change a week in San Juan?

Expect showers in every month: NOAA’s normals give about 13 rainy days even in March, the driest month, and 21 in November, the wettest. From June to November, keep the island and rainforest days movable during hurricane season, and check beach forecasts and sargassum, which usually peaks in June and July.

At Luis Muñoz Marín airport, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals give 55mm of rain over 13.1 days in March and 187mm over 20.6 days in November, with average highs from 28.4°C in January to 31.8°C in September (NOAA NCEI). The National Hurricane Center puts the season from 1 June to 30 November, peaking on 10 September (NHC).

Sargassum seaweed usually builds through spring and peaks around June or July; the University of South Florida called 2026 the second-largest year on record (USF, July 2026). The UK government lists Puerto Rico among US areas at higher earthquake risk and advises monitoring hurricanes (FCDO).

The days with cover are 2, 3 and 6, thanks to the forts’ interiors and the museums, so swap them with days 4, 5 and 7 when the forecast turns. Late January brings the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián, from 21 to 24 January 2027, which fills the old town (El Nuevo Día).

How do you get around, and which tours fit a week in San Juan?

Walk inside Old San Juan, use taxis or ride-hailing between districts, and hire a car only for El Yunque and the east, since rental cars cannot use the island ferries. Book at most two guided products: an El Yunque tour if you would rather not drive, and a bioluminescent-bay kayak trip.

ATI lists 32 bus routes at $0.75 for most journeys and the 16-station Tren Urbano, open daily from about 5:30am to 11:30pm with cash-only ticket machines; the train does not reach the old town, Condado or the airport (ATI). Several useful bus routes run roughly hourly, so taxis fill most gaps.

The FCDO says violent crime rarely affects tourists but advises against walking through quieter areas alone at night and warns not to leave passports in rental cars (FCDO).
