Desk-researched seasonal guide, checked 16 October 2026. Climate figures are DMI’s provisional 1991–2020 averages for Denmark as a whole, not forecasts for Copenhagen; event dates and opening seasons can change, so confirm them before booking.

Best time to visit Copenhagen: DMI sunshine, rain and temperature by month, Tivoli seasons, festival dates and Monday closures, with a clear verdict.

Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Copenhagen?

Link to this answer

Late May to early September suits most visitors: DMI’s 1991–2020 averages make May the sunniest month and July and August the warmest, Tivoli’s summer season runs from 30 March to 26 September 2027, and the harbour baths have lifeguards from June to August. For Christmas atmosphere, go between mid-November and early January.

Denmark’s climate is maritime: mild summers, raw rather than brutal winters, and rain in every month. In DMI’s 1991–2020 averages, the national daily high peaks at 21.2°C in July and August and falls to 3.6°C in January, while sunshine swings from 236.6 hours in May to just 42.9 hours in December. Light, more than cold, is what changes a Copenhagen trip.

That leaves a clear split. Summer is for harbour swims, cycling and long evenings; mid-November to early January is for Tivoli’s Christmas season, which runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 (Tivoli); and January to mid-March is the dark, quiet stretch when Tivoli lists no season at all and the museums carry the trip.

We checked this guide on 16 October 2026 against DMI, Tivoli, festival organisers, museum websites, the Copenhagen Metro, DSB and the UK Foreign Office. Pair it with where to stay in Copenhagen for a base and the Copenhagen 3-day itinerary for pacing.

What is Copenhagen’s weather like month by month?

Expect daily highs of about 4°C from December to February and 21°C in July and August, using DMI’s 1991–2020 averages for Denmark. Sunshine climbs from 43 hours in December to 237 in May, the sunniest month. August to October are the wettest months, and frost is common from December to March.

The table uses the national figures in DMI’s annual report Danmarks Klima 2025, which gives 1991–2020 normals as area-weighted averages for the whole of Denmark and notes that they are provisional, with final normals due during 2026. Copenhagen is one coastal city within that average, so read the columns as the shape of the year rather than a city forecast.

Two details are easy to miss. May is sunnier than any summer month, with 236.6 hours against 227.8 in July, yet much cooler, with a 15.6°C average high; and the wettest months by volume are August, September and October, not winter. Snow is occasional: DMI averages 23.8 days a year with snow cover nationally, almost all between December and March.

Frost days, when the temperature dips below 0°C, average 15.3 in January and 14.8 in February, and DMI counts only 12 summer days above 25°C in an average year, five of them in July. Pack layers and a windproof jacket in every season, and gloves from November to March if you plan to cycle.

Is spring a good time to visit Copenhagen?

Link to this answer

Late April and May are excellent: May is Denmark’s sunniest month in DMI’s averages and April its driest, and Tivoli’s summer season opens on 30 March 2027. March is still cold, with frost on a dozen nights on average, but brings CPH:DOX. Easter and the May public holidays add several long weekends.

Spring is when the light returns. In DMI’s 1991–2020 averages sunshine jumps from 69 hours in February to 131 in March, 188 in April and 237 in May, the sunniest month of the year, while average highs climb from 6.4°C to 15.6°C. April is the driest month, with 38.5 mm of rain, and frost days fall from 12.5 in March to 4.2 in April and almost none in May.

Spring is also when Copenhagen reopens. Tivoli runs an Easter season from 19 to 29 March 2027 and its summer season from 30 March, the National Museum opens on Mondays again from April, and Christiansborg’s reception rooms, ruins and kitchen open daily from 30 March (Christiansborg). Reffen, the street-food market, returns for its summer season from mid-March.

Watch the holidays. Øresund Direkt lists Denmark’s 2027 public holidays as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday on 25, 26 and 29 March, Ascension Day on 6 May and Whit Monday on 17 May (Øresund Direkt), and the Copenhagen Marathon runs on 9 May 2027. Earlier, the CPH:DOX documentary festival runs from 10 to 21 March 2027.

What is Copenhagen like in summer?

Summer is Copenhagen at full stretch: highs of 18.5 to 21.2°C, most sights on their longest hours, lifeguards at the harbour baths from 1 June to 31 August and Tivoli’s summer season. It is also festival season, from Distortion in early June to Roskilde Festival and Copenhagen Pride, so book early and expect a wetter August.

DMI’s averages give June, July and August highs of 18.5°C to 21.2°C and lows of 10 to 13°C, with 198 to 228 hours of sunshine a month. Hot days are the exception: DMI counts an average of 12 days a year above 25°C nationally, 5.2 of them in July and 4.3 in August. Rain rises through the season, to 82.1 mm in August.

The harbour is the summer draw. The Islands Brygge harbour bath is free and open from 6am to 10pm every day of the year, with lifeguards from 1 June to 31 August between 10am and 6pm, and Nordhavn’s Sandkaj bathing zone keeps the same lifeguard season. Canal boats start earlier too: Stromma’s first departure moves to 9.30am from 30 May to 20 September.

Festival dates cluster in June and August. VisitDenmark lists Distortion from 2 to 6 June 2027 (VisitDenmark), Roskilde Festival from 26 June to 3 July 2027 (VisitDenmark) and Copenhagen Pride from 14 to 22 August 2027 (VisitDenmark), and Copenhagen Cooking runs from 20 to 29 August 2027. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival had not announced its 2027 summer dates when we checked.

Should you visit Copenhagen in autumn?

Link to this answer

September is the pick of autumn, with a 17.2°C average high and Tivoli’s summer season running to late September. October is Denmark’s wettest month and brings Tivoli’s Halloween season; by November the days are short, frost returns and several museums close on Mondays, but Tivoli’s Christmas season opens mid-month.

September keeps much of summer’s warmth, with a 17.2°C average high in DMI’s figures, but October brings the year’s highest rainfall, 83.4 mm, and sunshine falls from 144 hours in September to 99 in October and 54 in November. By November average highs are down to 7.6°C, and frost days return, averaging six in the month.

Tivoli bridges the season: Halloween from 2 October to 1 November in 2026 and Christmas from 13 November, with no season listed between 2 and 12 November; in 2027 the summer season ends on 26 September (Tivoli). Culture Night, when museums open late, fell on 9 October in 2026; the Glyptotek, for example, opened from 6pm to midnight (Glyptotek).

From November, plan around winter hours. The National Museum closes on Mondays from November to March, Rosenborg closes on Mondays and at 4pm from 2 November to 23 December (Rosenborg), and Reffen closes for the season from November to February. Kronborg in Helsingør also drops to 10am to 4pm and closes on Mondays from November (Kronborg).

Is winter a good time to visit Copenhagen?

Link to this answer

Go between mid-November and early January for Tivoli’s Christmas season and the markets, or in February for Vinterjazz. From January to mid-March Tivoli lists no season, several museums close on Mondays and the Church of Our Saviour’s tower shuts for January, so plan a museum-led trip. Average highs stay around 4°C.

Winter is short on light rather than brutally cold. DMI records average highs of 3.6 to 4.7°C from December to February, lows just below freezing in January and February, and only 43 to 69 hours of sunshine a month. Snow cover averages 6.9 days in January and 7.4 in February nationally, so snow is possible but not dependable.

Christmas runs on several tracks: Tivoli’s Christmas season from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, a market on Højbro Plads from 14 November to 20 December 2026 (VisitCopenhagen) and Kronborg’s Christmas-market weekends in Helsingør (Kronborg). Plan around closures: Rosenborg, Amalienborg and the National Museum shut on 24 and 25 December, and the National Museum and Louisiana also close on 31 December.

February has its own reason to go: Vinterjazz spreads concerts across the whole month. For a winter day trip, Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød opens every day of the year, Mondays and Christmas included, and the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde opens daily from 10am to 4pm between 19 October and 30 April.

Which Copenhagen events change crowds and prices?

Tivoli’s Christmas season, from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, is the big winter draw. In summer, Distortion in early June, Roskilde Festival from 26 June to 3 July 2027, Copenhagen Pride from 14 to 22 August and Copenhagen Cooking fill the calendar. Book early around those dates and keep free cancellation.

Dates come from the organisers or official tourism sites, checked on 16 October 2026: Tivoli, Vinterjazz, CPH:DOX, the Copenhagen Marathon, Copenhagen Cooking, VisitCopenhagen for the Højbro Plads market, and VisitDenmark for Distortion, Roskilde Festival and Copenhagen Pride, whose own sites we could not load.

The effect column is our reading of where demand concentrates, not a measured price change. Roskilde Festival takes place outside the city, so it matters most if your Roskilde day trip falls in that week; Tivoli’s seasons and Pride week affect the centre directly.

Which Copenhagen sights close on Mondays or in winter?

Link to this answer

The Glyptotek, SMK and Louisiana close every Monday. From November to March the National Museum and the Amalienborg Museum also close on Mondays, Rosenborg and Kronborg do so in November and December, and the Church of Our Saviour’s tower shuts for January. The Round Tower, Frederiksborg and the Viking Ship Museum stay open.

Monday closures stack up in Copenhagen in winter. A November Monday can find the National Museum, the Glyptotek, SMK, Rosenborg and the Amalienborg Museum all shut, so build Mondays around walks, the canal tour, the Round Tower or a day trip to Frederiksborg or Roskilde.

Hours come from each venue’s own page, checked on 16 October 2026: the National Museum, Glyptotek, SMK, Rosenborg, Amalienborg, Louisiana, Kronborg, the Round Tower, the Church of Our Saviour, Frederiksborg and the Viking Ship Museum. Kronborg had not yet published its 2027 hours.

Which month suits your kind of Copenhagen trip?

Link to this answer

First-timers should aim for late May to early September, swimmers and cyclists for June to August, Christmas fans for mid-November to late December and museum lovers for the quieter months, avoiding winter Mondays. Day-trippers get the most from April to October, when castles and museums keep their longest hours and Mondays are easier.

The table pairs trip types with the months that serve them best, using DMI’s climate averages and the opening patterns above. None of these months is reliably dry: even April, the driest, averages 38.5 mm of rain in DMI’s national figures.

Families should check Danish public holidays as well as their own school breaks, because the Easter and May holidays bring long weekends. Anyone adding Malmö should carry a passport whatever the season: the UK Foreign Office says border controls are in place in Sweden for people travelling from Denmark via the Öresund crossing (FCDO).

So when should you visit Copenhagen?

Link to this answer

Choose late May or June for the best mix of sunshine, long opening hours and pre-festival calm, July and August for swimming and festivals, and mid-November to December for Tivoli’s Christmas season. January to March suits a museum-led trip if you plan around Monday closures, short days and Tivoli’s closed season.

Safety barely changes with the seasons. The FCDO calls crime levels generally low but names the Central Station, Nørreport, Strøget, Nyhavn, Kongens Nytorv, Christiania and the airport as pickpocket hotspots, and advises extra care in Christiania and Nørrebro late at night. It also notes that cyclists often have right of way, so look both ways at cycle lanes.

Next, pick a base with where to stay in Copenhagen and plan the days with the Copenhagen 3-day itinerary or the Copenhagen 7-day itinerary. For arrival, see Copenhagen Airport to the city by train or transfer; Copenhagen hotels and the Copenhagen destination guide cover the rest.
