Best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City, from WMO normals: dry December to March, hot April–May, wet May–November, Tet 2027 dates and late-year tidal flooding.

Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

Link to this answer

December to March is the best time for most visitors: WMO 1991–2020 normals show one to five rain days a month, with average highs of 31.6–33.6°C. April and May are the hottest months, peaking at 34.9°C as the rains return. September is the wettest month, averaging 273 mm. Tet falls on 6 February 2027.

Ho Chi Minh City has two seasons, not four. The World Meteorological Organization’s 1991–2020 normals, supplied by Viet Nam’s Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, show average highs between 31.6°C and 34.9°C in every month, so the real question is rain rather than temperature. Vietnam’s national tourism authority gives the same answer, listing December to April as the best time and May to November as a season of short afternoon showers (Vietnam Tourism).

Season shapes the day more than the trip. The War Remnants Museum opens from 07:30 to 17:30 every day (SGGP) and the Independence Palace from 07:00 to 18:00, including holidays (Independence Palace), so a wet-season visit still works if you save the indoor sights for the afternoon storms.

For where to sleep and how to fill the days, pair this page with where to stay in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City 3-day itinerary and the Ho Chi Minh City destination guide.

What is Ho Chi Minh City’s weather month by month?

Link to this answer

Average highs stay between 31.6°C and 34.9°C all year, so rain is the real variable. January to March average 8–18 mm and one or two rain days a month. From May to October the monsoon brings 13–19 rain days and 202–273 mm a month, before November and December dry out again.

Figures are the WMO’s 1991–2020 averages for Ho Chi Minh City (WMO World Weather Information Service). They are long-term averages, not forecasts: a dry week in July or a shower in February is entirely possible.

Read the rain-days column with the totals. Vietnam’s tourism authority says the wet season brings a dependable afternoon downpour, usually lasting a few hours (Vietnam Tourism weather guide), which is why mornings are the best time for outdoor sightseeing from May to November.

Why are December to March the easiest months?

Link to this answer

They combine the fewest rain days, one to five a month, with the coolest nights of the year, around 23–25°C. Days still reach 31.6–33.6°C, so walk in the mornings and evenings. Book early for Christmas, New Year and Tet, when the FCDO says petty crime typically rises and transport fills up.

December, January and February average 41, 12 and 8 mm of rain (WMO), which makes them the safest months for a Cu Chi tunnels day or a Mekong Delta trip; the FCDO says flooding is common in the Mekong Delta in the rainy season (FCDO). The official Cu Chi tunnels site is open every day from 07:00 to 17:00 (Cu Chi Tunnels Historical Site).

Tet changes the city’s rhythm. In 2026 the Nguyen Hue flower street opened on 15 February and stayed open until 21:00 on 22 February, the sixth day of the new year (Tuoi Tre). Plans for 2027 had not been announced when we checked, but Tet itself falls on 6 February 2027 (Tuoi Tre).

The FCDO says bag-snatching by thieves on motorcycles is common and that petty crime typically rises during the Christmas and Tet seasons, so keep phones and bags away from the kerb on busy holiday streets.

How hot is Ho Chi Minh City in April and May?

Link to this answer

These are the hottest months: WMO normals put average highs at 34.5°C in April and 34.9°C in May, with lows of 26.4°C, so nights bring little relief. April is still mostly dry, with four rain days; May brings 13 rain days and 202 mm as the wet season begins.

Use the heat to shape the day: walks before 10:00, museums through the afternoon and the riverside after sunset. The HCMC Museum in the former Gia Long Palace opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00, including holidays (HCMC Museum). From 1 October 2026 it, the War Remnants Museum and the Fine Arts Museum each charge 60,000 VND, with school and university students admitted free (Tuoi Tre).

Reunification Day on 30 April and International Workers’ Day on 1 May are public holidays (Tuoi Tre), and in 2026 they formed a four-day break from 30 April to 3 May (Tuoi Tre). The 2027 arrangement had not been announced when we checked, so expect busier flights and buses and book early.

Metro Line 1 is a cool way to cross the city in the heat: trains run from 05:00 until 22:00 on weekdays and until 23:00 at weekends and on public holidays (Tuoi Tre).

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

Link to this answer

Not if you plan around the afternoons. From May to October, WMO normals show 13–19 rain days and 202–273 mm of rain a month, but Vietnam’s tourism authority describes a dependable afternoon downpour rather than all-day rain. Mornings stay usable for sightseeing, while museums and the metro carry the storm hours.

The FCDO says the rain season in the north and south runs from June to September, that the tropical cyclone season normally runs from May to November, and that flooding is common in the Mekong Delta. A Mekong day trip, about a two-hour drive to Ben Tre according to Vietnam Tourism, is the outing most likely to be affected.

September, at 273 mm, is the wettest month, and July has the most rain days, 19 (WMO). Carry a light rain jacket rather than relying on an umbrella, and decide on a Cu Chi or Mekong day the evening before, from the forecast.

The FCDO added a warning about the tropical storm season to its Vietnam advice on 21 September 2026, noting that storms can cause serious travel disruption (FCDO Vietnam). Check it, and your airline, in the days before you fly.

What are Ho Chi Minh City’s late-year high tides?

Link to this answer

Late in the year, high tides on the Saigon River can flood low-lying streets even without rain. On 10 October 2026, water at Nha Be reached 1.71 m, and forecasters expected peaks between 04:00 and 06:00 and between 16:00 and 18:00. Plan airport runs and evening walks around those windows on high-tide days.

Tuoi Tre reported that high tides flooded multiple streets on 10 October 2026, citing the Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Station, with Phu An and Nha Be expected to reach 1.7–1.75 m over the following days (Tuoi Tre). Tuoi Tre linked those peaks to the second and third days of the ninth lunar month, so high-tide days move each year with the lunar calendar; check the local forecast for your dates.

In November 2025 the city named 12 streets in the former city that often flood by 0.1–0.3 m at high tide, including Calmette near the centre (Tuoi Tre). That is shallow, but it slows traffic; ask your hotel whether its street floods, and avoid tight airport connections during the afternoon peak.

Which holidays affect a Ho Chi Minh City trip in 2026 and 2027?

Link to this answer

Tet matters most: Lunar New Year’s Day is 6 February 2027, and public-sector workers are off from 4 to 10 February. National Day brings a break from 2 to 5 September 2027, and Reunification Day and Labour Day on 30 April and 1 May fill transport too. Book early for all three.

The 2027 dates come from the approved holiday schedule reported by Tuoi Tre on 2 October 2026; the 2026 dates come from its January 2026 holiday guide (Tuoi Tre). Holiday breaks drive domestic travel, so flights, trains and long-distance buses fill first.

Holidays do not close the main sights. The Independence Palace says it opens every day, including holidays and Tet, unless it announces otherwise (Independence Palace), and the HCMC Museum also opens on holidays and at Tet (HCMC Museum). Restaurants and small shops set their own hours, so ask your hotel what will be open.

What changes in 2026 and 2027 should shape your dates?

Three things. Under the current plan, Long Thanh airport will run at only about 6–10% of its designed capacity from December 2026 to March 2027, so check which airport your ticket uses. Museum fees in the city rose to 60,000 VND on 1 October 2026. And Metro Line 2, started in January 2026, will be under construction until about 2030.

Tuoi Tre reported on 14 October 2026 that Long Thanh will operate at around 6–10% of its designed capacity from December 2026 to March 2027 (Tuoi Tre). Tan Son Nhat, which Vietnam’s tourism authority puts just 7 km from the centre (Vietnam Tourism), remains the city’s main airport, but read your booking carefully if you fly in that period.

Metro Line 1 opened on 22 December 2024 with 14 stations over 19.7 km (VnEconomy). Line 2 construction began on 15 January 2026; the 11.3 km line will start at Ben Thanh and run along Cach Mang Thang Tam and Truong Chinh streets, with completion targeted for 2030 (Tuoi Tre).

For entry, the FCDO says British nationals can visit without a visa for up to 45 days, that the e-visa allows a 90-day stay with multiple entries, and that a digital arrival card for Tan Son Nhat has been encouraged since 15 April 2026 but is not mandatory. See our Vietnam e-visa guide.

Who should visit Ho Chi Minh City when?

First-timers and families do best from December to March, when rain is rare. Heat-tolerant city breakers can add April. Travellers with flexible plans can take the wet season, using mornings outdoors and afternoons indoors. Anyone with tight connections late in the year should check high-tide and storm forecasts first.

The table pairs each type of trip with the months that suit it, using the WMO averages and official holiday dates above. Whatever the month, start outdoor sightseeing early: the War Remnants Museum opens at 07:30 and the Independence Palace at 07:00.

If you are combining the south with the north, read the best time to visit Hanoi, since the two cities’ best months only partly overlap, and compare Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang by train or plane for the journey in between.
