Should you take the train or fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang?

Fly, for nearly everyone. The quickest of six trains on Vietnam Railways’ 28 October 2026 timetable, SE2, takes 16 hours 31 minutes from Saigon station, and two others take more than 19 hours. Rail only makes sense as slow travel, or broken into stages at coastal stops such as Nha Trang.

Vietnam Railways’ timetable for Wednesday 28 October 2026 shows SE8 at 06:00, SE6 at 08:45, SE22 at 10:15, SE10 at 13:15, SE4 at 19:20 and SE2 at 20:35 leaving Saigon station for Da Nang. Journey times run from 16 hours 31 minutes on SE2 to 19 hours 29 minutes on SE10.

On the same date, the best Saigon departure was 1 hour 23 minutes slower than the best from Hanoi, which tells you how far south the city sits on the line. Airline timetables were blocked by bot checks when we looked, so no flight time appears here; what we did verify are the airport links, check-in advice and the Long Thanh changeover that may affect flights from December 2026.

How does the door-to-door time compare from central Ho Chi Minh City?

By rail, 16 hours 51 minutes from Saigon station to Da Nang station on SE2, counting a 20-minute boarding buffer. By air, the ground pieces before take-off come to about 2 hours 45 minutes: a 45-minute bus ride to Terminal 3 and Vietnam Airlines’ advice to arrive two hours before departure.

Rail: 20 minutes to board at Saigon station (our assumption) + 16 hours 31 minutes on SE2, 20:35 to 13:06 the next day (Vietnam Railways) = 16 hours 51 minutes. The overnight SE4, 19:20 to 12:13, comes to 17 hours 13 minutes on the same basis.

Air: bus 109 from the Saigon bus station to Tan Son Nhat’s Terminal 3, which the city’s public transport centre says takes about 45 minutes depending on traffic, running every 15 to 25 minutes (VOH) + 2 hours at the airport, as Vietnam Airlines advises for Terminal 3 + the scheduled flight + a 20-minute wait at the Da Nang carousel (our assumption) + a short transfer, because the airport’s own guide says walkers reach the Han River in about 40 minutes. The fixed part is 3 hours 5 minutes plus the flight and that last ride.

What dominates is the rail run time, more than five times the air side’s fixed ground time. Even a long flight and a slow Da Nang transfer could not let the train catch up, so choose it for the experience or for stops, not for speed.

Which of the six trains is worth taking?

If you take the train at all, take an evening departure. SE4 leaves Saigon at 19:20 and arrives at 12:13, and SE2 leaves at 20:35 and arrives at 13:06, so one night covers most of the distance. SE22 and SE10 take over 19 hours and arrive before dawn or at breakfast, which suits few people.

The morning trains are the hard sell: SE8 leaves at 06:00 and reaches Da Nang at 23:21, and SE6 leaves at 08:45 and arrives at 01:46, so you give up a whole day and arrive when the city is asleep (Vietnam Railways). Times shift with seasons and holidays, so recheck on dsvn.vn before booking.

The line’s strength is the places in between. Nha Trang, Tuy Hoa, Dieu Tri, Quy Nhon, Quang Ngai and Tam Ky all appear in Vietnam Railways’ station list (Vietnam Railways), so a split journey with a beach night or two turns a gruelling ride into a coastal itinerary.

The run times quoted here are station to station, Saigon to Da Nang. If you plan a stopover, look up each leg separately, because the overnight trains that suit the full trip may pass your chosen stop in the small hours.

What should you know about flying from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang?

Check the terminal and, from December 2026, the airport. Vietnam Airlines moved its domestic flights at Tan Son Nhat to Terminal 3 on 17 May 2025, and Tuoi Tre reports that the new Long Thanh airport will run at 6 to 10% of its capacity from December 2026 to March 2027.

Vietnam Airlines moved almost all its domestic operations at Tan Son Nhat to Terminal 3 from 17 May 2025, keeping only its Con Dao, Rach Gia and Ca Mau routes and flights by Pacific Airlines and VASCO at Terminal 1. It asks passengers to reach the airport at least two hours before departure and points them to kiosks, self bag drop and online check-in.

Tuoi Tre reported on 14 October 2026 that Long Thanh will operate at around 6 to 10% of its designed capacity from December 2026 to March 2027, rising to about 50% from April to October 2027. The report did not say which flights will move, so read the airport code on your ticket for any trip from December.

Da Nang’s departure and arrival boards on 17 October 2026 listed Vietnam Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways services to and from Ho Chi Minh City (Da Nang airport). Back in the city, buses 109 and 152 serve Tan Son Nhat, with 152 running to Terminals 1 and 2 from 05:15 to 19:00 (VOH).

How do you book the train, and what does it cost?

Vietnam Railways sells seats and berths on dsvn.vn, and you need passport details that match the ticket. Fares move with campaigns rather than staying fixed: in September 2026 the railway cut Saigon–Nha Trang fares by 20% and some central-coast sleepers by up to 40%. Look for current offers before you pay.

The September 2026 campaign, which ended on 30 September, gave 20% off every class between Saigon and Nha Trang, 10% on journeys from Saigon or Nha Trang to Tuy Hoa or Dieu Tri, and up to 40% off sleepers between Da Nang and Dieu Tri. Those segment discounts reward breaking the journey, so watch for similar offers before buying one long ticket.

Foreign passengers identify themselves with a passport, and Vietnam Railways treats a ticket as invalid if the name or number on the boarding card differs from your document or from its electronic system. Typing errors on a reseller site become your problem on the platform, so copy the details from the passport itself.

Which mode handles luggage better on this route?

The plane has the clearer rules and the stricter limits. Vietnam Airlines publishes hand-baggage weight and size limits and charges for excess, while Vietnam Railways’ luggage rules would not load for us, so we have no rail limit to quote. On a 16-hour train you will also live out of the bag, so keep essentials in a small day pack.

For a long train ride, think in two bags: the main one stowed for the night and a small one with water, a charger, toiletries and a warm layer. If you plan a stopover on the coast, a backpack makes the station-to-hotel walks easier than a wheeled case.

What could change your plans in 2026 and 2027?

Three dated things: Long Thanh’s phased opening from December 2026, the railway’s special ticket-change terms for Lunar New Year 2027, and seasonal fare campaigns that come and go. As far as we could find, no official disruption notice for the Saigon–Da Nang line was in force on 17 October 2026.

Long Thanh matters even if you never fly from it, because a split between two airports changes how long the ground leg takes. Until the Tuoi Tre timeline is confirmed by your airline, assume Tan Son Nhat and check again when you receive any schedule-change email.

Weather in the south and on the central coast follows different patterns. Start with best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City and check the Da Nang forecast separately before a fixed-date booking.

Who should choose the train over the plane?

Slow travellers who want to stop along the coast, rail enthusiasts, and anyone who would rather spend a night in a berth than pay for a hotel. Everyone else should fly: on a one- or two-week trip, 16 to 19 hours on the train costs more time than it saves money.

The strongest rail case is a stopover itinerary: Saigon to Nha Trang or Quy Nhon, a few nights by the sea, then on to Da Nang. Each leg is shorter, the discounts in recent campaigns favoured exactly those segments, and you see the coast rather than an airport.

The strongest air case is everything else. A morning flight leaves the afternoon free in Da Nang or Hoi An, and Tan Son Nhat’s closeness to the centre keeps the Saigon end short, at least until Long Thanh changes the picture for some flights.
