Desk-researched comparison, checked 17 October 2026; not a personally tested journey. Train times come from Vietnam Railways’ timetable for Wednesday 28 October 2026. Airline schedules sat behind bot checks, so no flight time is quoted. Buffers marked as assumptions are ours.

Hanoi to Da Nang train vs flight, checked October 2026: six daily Vietnam Railways trains, fastest 15h08, against a flight from Noi Bai, door to door.

Key takeaways

Is the train or the plane better from Hanoi to Da Nang?

Link to this answer

Fly unless the journey is the point. Vietnam Railways’ timetable for 28 October 2026 shows six trains from Hanoi to Da Nang, the quickest taking 15 hours 8 minutes. The overnight trains reach the coast north of Da Nang in daylight, which is the best reason to choose rail over flying.

On Wednesday 28 October 2026, Vietnam Railways’ timetable listed SE7 at 06:00, SE5 at 08:00, SE9 at 13:00, SE3 at 19:20, SE19 at 19:45 and SE1 at 21:45 from Hanoi station to Da Nang. Run times ranged from 15 hours 8 minutes on SE3 to 16 hours 48 minutes on SE9. Tickets are sold on dsvn.vn, the railway’s own site.

Airline timetables were behind bot checks when we looked, so we have not printed a flight time. What we could confirm is the ground on each side: bus 86 runs from Noi Bai airport to Hanoi station, and Da Nang’s airport says the Han River area is about a 40-minute walk away.

Plan the Hanoi end with where to stay in Hanoi and the Hanoi 3-day itinerary, or see the Hanoi destination guide and Hanoi hotels.

  • Trains: six on 28 October 2026, leaving Hanoi between 06:00 and 21:45
  • Fastest: SE3, 19:20 to 10:28, 15 hours 8 minutes
  • Airport bus 86: Noi Bai to Hanoi station every 25–30 min, 50,000 VND
  • Vietnam Airlines closes check-in 40 minutes before domestic flights
  • Not quoted: flight block time, which we could not load

How long does Hanoi to Da Nang take door to door?

From Hanoi station, the fastest train reaches Da Nang station in 15 hours 8 minutes, or 15 hours 28 minutes with a 20-minute boarding buffer. The air journey can also start at Hanoi station, with bus 86 to Noi Bai, and only loses if the ride, airport buffer and flight together run past 15 hours.

Rail: 0 minutes of transfer if you start at Hanoi station + 20 minutes to board (our assumption) + 15 hours 8 minutes on SE3, 19:20 to 10:28 (Vietnam Railways, 28 October 2026) = 15 hours 28 minutes to Da Nang station. On the daytime SE7, 06:00 to 22:15, the same sum is 16 hours 35 minutes.

Air: up to 30 minutes waiting for bus 86, which Noi Bai airport lists every 25 to 30 minutes from 07:00 to 22:05 for 50,000 VND, plus the ride, for which it publishes no time + 90 minutes at the airport (our assumption; Vietnam Airlines closes domestic check-in 40 minutes before departure) + the flight on your booking + 20 minutes for bags (our assumption) + a short road hop, since Da Nang airport puts the Han River area about 40 minutes away on foot.

What dominates is the train’s run time. Every air-side piece we could verify is measured in minutes; the train is measured in a night. The real question is whether that night, in a berth that replaces a hotel room, is worth more to you than a day saved.

Which Hanoi to Da Nang train should you take?

Link to this answer

For most people one of the evening trains: SE3 leaves Hanoi at 19:20 and reaches Da Nang at 10:28, SE19 runs 19:45 to 11:35 and SE1 21:45 to 13:14. You sleep through the north and see the central coast by daylight. The 06:00 SE7 suits travellers who cannot sleep on trains.

All six trains on our sample date ran from Hanoi station; three left in the morning or early afternoon and three in the evening (Vietnam Railways, Wednesday 28 October 2026). Times change with the season and around Tet, so recheck for your date on dsvn.vn.

Because the evening trains arrive between 10:28 and 13:14, their last stretch, past Lang Co and around the Hai Van headland into Da Nang, runs in daylight. The daytime SE7 does the opposite: it shows you the northern provinces by day but reaches Da Nang at 22:15, after dark.

Vietnam Railways also promotes a tourist train linking the heritage city of Hue with Da Nang (dsvn.vn), which suits a stopover: take a night train as far as Hue, spend a day there, then finish the trip along the coast.

When is flying from Hanoi to Da Nang the better choice?

Link to this answer

On almost any short trip. If you have a week or less in Vietnam, a night and much of a day on the train is a large share of it. Da Nang’s airport lists Hanoi among its 13 domestic routes, and its boards showed Vietnam Airlines, Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways on the route.

Da Nang International’s route page lists 13 domestic destinations, Hanoi among them, with domestic flights at Terminal 1 (Da Nang airport). Its live boards on 17 October 2026 showed flights to and from Hanoi by Vietnam Airlines, Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways (Da Nang airport). We could not load airline timetables or fares, so compare them in a search tool for your date.

At the Hanoi end, Noi Bai’s public transport page lists city buses, including route 07 to Cau Giay and route 17 to Long Bien, alongside the express route 86 to Hanoi station, plus licensed taxis and contract cars that wait at the terminals. Vietnam Airlines closes domestic check-in 40 minutes before departure (Vietnam Airlines).

At Da Nang, Danabus routes 12 and 06 serve the airport from 05:30 to 19:00, with an estimated wait of 5 to 30 minutes, and Hai Van’s suburban bus runs to Hoi An between 07:30 and 16:00 (Da Nang airport). Ride-hailing apps work too; tell the driver Terminal 1 or 2.

How do Hanoi to Da Nang train tickets and fares work?

Link to this answer

Vietnam Railways sells tickets on dsvn.vn, and fares move with promotions. A September 2026 campaign cut Hanoi–Da Nang sleeper fares by up to 20% on some trains and took 20 to 30% off return legs booked early. Whatever you pay, the name and document number on the ticket must match your passport.

Vietnam Railways’ September 2026 promotion, which ran to the end of that month, gave up to 20% off sleepers and 15% off seats on several Hanoi–Da Nang trains, with smaller cuts on others. It also cut a return leg by 20% when booked 1 to 19 days ahead and by 30% when booked 20 or more days ahead. Treat these as examples of how the railway prices, and check what is running for your dates.

Since 1 January 2024, Vietnam Railways says, passengers must give identity details when buying and carry a matching document on board; for foreign nationals that means a passport. A ticket is invalid if the boarding card details do not match your ID or the electronic ticketing system, and you would have to buy a new one.

Resellers including our partner 12Go sell Vietnamese train seats with their own fees; our 12Go vs direct booking guide explains the trade-offs. Entry rules are in our Vietnam e-visa guide, and an eSIM for Vietnam keeps tickets and maps working on the move.

Is the train or the plane easier with luggage?

Link to this answer

We could not open Vietnam Railways’ carriage rules, so we quote no rail luggage limit. Vietnam Airlines charges for hand baggage over its limits: going up to 10 kg over costs the same as one checked bag at the airport. Pack for the stricter mode, which in practice means the plane.

Vietnam Airlines’ hand baggage page says carry-on bags must fit under the seat or in the overhead bin, and sets excess charges: an overweight bag of up to 10 kg, or an extra piece, costs the airport checked-bag charge for the route, and a bag over both size and weight limits costs twice the excess charge. Children under two may bring one bag of up to 3 kg plus a foldable stroller.

Check your own fare and test the bag in our cabin bag size checker; airline carry-on sizes compares carriers if you are flying with someone other than Vietnam Airlines.

On the train, rack and floor space in a sleeper compartment is shared with other passengers, so a soft bag that fits beside or above the berth is kinder than a hard case. Keep your passport, water and a warm layer in a small bag at the head of the berth.

What can disrupt Hanoi to Da Nang travel?

Link to this answer

Holiday peaks are the dated risk we found. Vietnam Railways has published separate change and refund rules for Tet Dinh Mui 2027, the Lunar New Year, linked from dsvn.vn, and its timetables shift around holidays. We found no current official disruption notice for this line when we checked on 17 October 2026.

Tet is when both trains and flights fill fastest and when change rules tighten. The Tet 2027 rules are linked from the dsvn.vn home page alongside the railway’s 2026 fare and refund policy; read them before you buy a ticket for the holiday period.

For weather, best time to visit Hanoi sets out the northern seasons. Conditions at the Da Nang end can differ, so check the forecast for both cities in the week before you travel.

On the day, keep the booking code and your passport together: Vietnam Railways says staff can ask to see a document that matches the boarding card (Vietnam Railways). A missed train is your loss unless your fare allows changes, so leave slack before an evening departure.

Who should take the train, and who should fly?

Link to this answer

Take the train if you want the overnight experience, a daylight run along the central coast, or a stop in Hue. Fly if your trip is short, you sleep badly on the move, or you are travelling with young children and lots of luggage. Couples with time often take the train one way and fly back.

The train rewards travellers who treat the journey as part of the holiday. An evening departure means no lost sightseeing day, the berth replaces a hotel night, and the last hours along the coast are the most scenic part of the trip. It also lets you break the journey at Hue.

The plane rewards everyone in a hurry. With a week or two in Vietnam, saving most of a day matters, and Da Nang’s airport sits so close to the centre that the arrival end of the trip is quick.

Continuing south afterwards? Our Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang comparison covers the southern half of the line, and the Hanoi 7-day itinerary suits a longer stay in the north first.

  • Train: evening departures, daylight coast, Hue stopover
  • Plane: short trips, light sleepers, families with lots of bags
  • Both: train south for the scenery, fly back to save time
