What is the best 7-day itinerary for Hanoi?

Spend four days in Hanoi and three outside it. Arrive gently in the Old Quarter, give a day to the Imperial Citadel and the Temple of Literature by night, then take a two-day, one-night Ha Long Bay cruise. Rest on day five, visit Ninh Binh on day six, and finish at the Museum of Ethnology.

The Hanoi 3-day itinerary packs the city’s headline sights into three brisk days. A week lets you spread them out, see the Temple of Literature’s evening programme, sleep a night on Ha Long Bay and add Ninh Binh’s karst valleys, with a slow day in the middle so the trips do not run together.

Keep one hotel in the Old Quarter or the French Quarter for the whole week (see where to stay in Hanoi), and leave your main bag there during the cruise. If your cruise includes a transfer from Hanoi, confirm the pickup point and time when you book.

Hours, fees and travel times come from official pages and Vietnam’s tourism authority, checked on 17 October 2026. Check the best time to visit Hanoi first: storms, not heat, are what most often reshuffle this week.

What does the week look like at a glance?

Days one, two, five and seven are in Hanoi; days three and four are the Ha Long cruise; day six is Ninh Binh. Put the cruise on the days with the calmest forecast, and keep day five free so a storm-delayed cruise can move without losing Ninh Binh. The table lists the hours that matter.

The order is built around two constraints. The mausoleum opens only on Tuesday to Thursday and weekend mornings, according to Vietnam Tourism, and the Temple of Literature’s evening programme runs only on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (Temple of Literature). If day two cannot match both, choose the evening programme and see the mausoleum on day seven.

Day trips run on road time: about two and a half hours each way to Ha Long and about two hours to Ninh Binh, by Vietnam’s tourism authority’s estimates (Ha Long; Ninh Binh). Avoid stacking them back to back.

How should you spend days one and two in the city?

Keep day one light: check in, walk Hoan Kiem Lake and cross to Ngoc Son Temple, then eat in the Old Quarter. On day two, spend the morning at the Imperial Citadel, add the mausoleum if it is open, rest in the afternoon and return to the Temple of Literature for its evening programme.

Vietnam’s tourism authority describes Hoan Kiem Lake as busy with walkers in the mornings and evenings (Vietnam Tourism), and lists Ngoc Son Temple at 50,000 VND and the Old Quarter as a free, single square kilometre of 36 trade streets (Vietnam Tourism). At weekends the streets around the lake become pedestrian zones (DTiNews), a gentle first evening if you arrive on a Friday.

The Thang Long Imperial Citadel, at 19C Hoang Dieu, opens 08:00–17:00 every day (Imperial Citadel). The mausoleum, a short walk away, admits visitors on Tuesday to Thursday and weekend mornings until 10:15, according to Vietnam Tourism, which gives those hours for December to September.

The Temple of Literature opens 08:00–17:00 daily for 70,000 VND, with children under 16 free, and its evening programme, with a separate ticket, runs 18:30–22:00 on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays (Temple of Literature). Booking is through the temple’s own site or its ticket counter.

How do you fit a Ha Long Bay cruise into days three and four?

Link to this answer

Book a two-day, one-night cruise with hotel pickup. You leave Hanoi on the morning of day three, spend about two and a half hours on the road to Tuan Chau or Bai Chay, and sleep on board. Day four is a morning on the water and an afternoon drive back. Confirm the bay, route and fees included.

Vietnam’s tourism authority says Ha Long is about two and a half hours by road from Hanoi, with cruise transfers from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports (Vietnam Tourism), and that cruises run all year as a full day, two days and one night, or three days and two nights, with March to April and September to November the best times (Vietnam Tourism).

Ask which official route the boat follows. The Ha Long Bay Management Board publishes its day routes stop by stop, from Thien Cung and Dau Go caves on VHL1 to Ti Top island and Sung Sot cave on VHL2, with separate overnight fees (Ha Long Bay Management Board). A quote that names its stops is easier to compare than one that only says “Ha Long cruise”.

The FCDO advises considering safety standards carefully before an overnight boat trip, checking a boat’s registration and crew certification, and making sure you get a safety briefing and a life jacket. Read our Ha Long Bay guide for the full checklist.

What are the official Ha Long Bay fees?

Link to this answer

The Ha Long Bay Management Board charges 250,000 VND per person for day routes VHL1 and VHL2 and 200,000 VND for VHL3 and VHL4. Overnight trips carry their own fee, from 500,000 VND for one night on routes 3 and 4 to 750,000 VND for two nights on route 2. Check whether your quote includes them.

The day-route figures come from the Management Board’s fee page (Ha Long Bay Management Board), checked on 17 October 2026, and so do the overnight rates, which apply for up to 24 hours on board for one night and 48 hours for two. Our Ha Long Bay guide also covers Lan Ha Bay’s separate fees. These are per-person charges set by the authorities, so they are a fair line to compare between quotes.

A cheap cruise that leaves them out is not necessarily cheaper once they are added back. Lan Ha Bay, off Cat Ba Island, is managed by Hai Phong and charges differently, so if a listing mixes bays, ask which fees apply to your route.

Why keep day five slow in the French Quarter?

Link to this answer

Because it protects the rest of the week. After two long days on the road and water, a short walking day lets you catch up on sleep and laundry, and it gives a storm-delayed cruise somewhere to move. See Hoa Lo Prison in the morning and the Women’s Museum after lunch, both open every day.

Hoa Lo, at No. 1 Hoa Lo Street in Cua Nam ward, opens 08:00–17:00 every day, including public holidays and Tet (Hoa Lo relic site). The Vietnamese Women’s Museum at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00, for 40,000 VND (Vietnam Tourism).

The Hanoi Opera House nearby was under renovation when we checked, so admire it from outside; Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, free to enter, opens 08:00–11:00 and 14:00–20:00 from Monday to Saturday (Vietnam Tourism).

If the cruise was postponed, move it here and push this walking day to the slot it left. That swap is the reason the plan keeps day five unplanned beyond the two museums.

How do you do Ninh Binh on day six?

Link to this answer

Leave early by train, private driver or tour; Vietnam’s tourism authority puts Ninh Binh about two hours from Hanoi. Take a sampan through the Trang An karsts, see Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s capital in the 10th and 11th centuries, and climb Hang Mua’s 500 steps for the view if you have the energy and dry weather.

Vietnam’s tourism authority describes Trang An’s sampans, each rowed by a boat person using their feet, gliding through karsts and grottoes; Hoa Lu, protected by its karsts and rivers when it served as the capital; and Hang Mua, where 500 steps climb to a lookout over the river and paddies (Vietnam Tourism).

The same page lists April to June as the best time, says rice fields around Tam Coc turn golden in late May, and describes Bai Dinh as the country’s largest Buddhist temple complex, with cave temples about 300 steps up and a new temple area covering 500 hectares (Vietnam Tourism). Choosing Trang An or Tam Coc for the boat keeps the day manageable.

Boat prices were not published on an official page we could open, so check the ticket office or ask your tour what is included. Do not ride a motorbike there yourself: the FCDO says motorbike travel in Vietnam is much riskier than in the UK.

How should you spend the last day before flying?

If it is not a Monday, spend the morning at the Museum of Ethnology, open from 08:30, then have lunch by West Lake and collect your bags. Leave generous time for the airport: route 86 runs from Hanoi Station to Noi Bai, and a booked car is simpler with luggage or a tight connection.

Vietnam’s tourism authority lists the Museum of Ethnology as open 08:30–17:30 daily except Mondays and the New Year holiday, for 40,000 VND, with outdoor life-size replicas of ethnic houses (Vietnam Tourism). On a Monday, swap it for the mausoleum if it is a Tuesday-to-Thursday or weekend morning, or for a last Old Quarter walk.

Transerco’s route 86 opened in 2016 between Hanoi Station on Le Duan Street and Noi Bai, with eight stops over 33 km and journeys of up to 55 minutes (Vietnam News); fares and timetables have changed since, so check on the day. Vietnam’s tourism authority says the airport is also served by taxis and ride-hailing (Vietnam Tourism).

How should storms, heat and Tet change the week?

Link to this answer

Storms matter most. The cyclone season normally runs from May to November, and Ha Long cruises are suspended when storms approach, so book refundable terms and keep day five as the buffer. In summer, start Ninh Binh early. Around Tet, on 6 February 2027, book transport early and check which restaurants open.

The FCDO says the tropical cyclone season normally runs from May to November and that the northern rain season runs from June to September. On 24 August 2026, tourism services in Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay and Trang An were suspended as Storm Narra brought heavy rain to the north (DTiNews), which shows both day trips can stop together.

The WMO normals put June’s average high at 33.8°C and August’s rain at 335 mm, while October to December bring the fewest rain days. Tet falls on 6 February 2027, with public-sector workers off from 4 to 10 February (Tuoi Tre), so trains, buses and cruise transfers fill early.

What should you book before a week in Hanoi?

Link to this answer

Book the Ha Long cruise first, with free cancellation for storms, then the Ninh Binh driver or tour, and the Temple of Literature’s evening ticket if your dates fall on a Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday. City sights need no advance booking. Around Tet and in the storm season, book everything refundable.

Compare cruises on the route they name, cabin type, pickup time and whether the Management Board’s sightseeing fees are included; our Ha Long Bay cruise verdict covers who should skip the bay. For tour platforms, see GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook.

Check entry rules in our Vietnam e-visa guide: the FCDO says British nationals can visit without a visa for up to 45 days. If you continue south afterwards, compare Hanoi to Da Nang by train or plane.
