When is the best time to visit Prague?
Link to this answerFor most travellers, the best time to visit Prague is mid-May to June or September. Old Town afternoons then average 20–24 °C, the festival season is under way, and the cold, short days are months off. Choose late November to early January for the Christmas markets, accepting near-freezing nights and crowded market squares.
Prague’s seasons are sharply defined. Summer afternoons in the Old Town average 26–27 °C, winter days barely clear 4 °C, and sunshine swings from about 46 hours in December to about 229 in July. Those figures are 1991–2020 averages we calculated from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute’s monthly station records for the Klementinum, an Old Town observatory where regular measurements began in 1752. They describe the streets you will actually walk, not the airport on the city’s western edge.
The calendar matters as much as the weather. May brings the Prague Spring music festival and the marathon, mid-October the free Signal light festival, and late November to early January the Christmas markets on Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. Each draws visitors to the same few squares, so plan rooms early for those dates; the weeks in between are where mild weather meets a lighter event calendar.

What is Prague’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerAt the Klementinum in the Old Town, average highs climb from 3.9 °C in January to 26.5 °C in July, and lows hover around freezing from December to February. Rain is light all year, about 454 mm, but most of it falls from May to August. Sunshine peaks at about 229 hours in July.
The table shows 1991–2020 averages for the Praha-Klementinum station, 191 m above sea level, calculated by TravelShifu from the monthly records in ČHMÚ’s open climate data. “Rain days” counts days with at least 1 mm of precipitation, and the last column counts days that reached 30 °C or more. These are long-run averages, not a forecast, and recent years have run warmer: ČHMÚ’s 2024 climate yearbook rated 2024 the warmest year in the Czech national series since 1961, 2.0 °C above the 1991–2020 normal.
Read the rain columns together. More rain falls from May to August (256 mm) than in the other eight months combined, and a wet July day averages more than twice the rain of a wet January day, so summer rain tends to come in heavier bursts. Carry a light waterproof from May to August and keep an indoor plan; our Prague in the rain guide lists covered options.
| Month | Avg high (°C) | Avg low (°C) | Rain (mm) | Rain days (≥1 mm) | Sunshine (hours) | Days ≥30 °C |

Why does central Prague feel milder than the airport?
Link to this answerPrague’s airport weather station, Praha-Ruzyně, stands at 364 m on the city’s western edge, about 170 m above the Old Town’s Klementinum. Over 1991–2020 its January nights averaged −3.5 °C against −0.5 °C in the centre, and it had far more days with snow lying. Pack for the colder figure if you stay out of town.
ČHMÚ’s station metadata puts Ruzyně at 364 m and the Klementinum at 191 m. Using the same 1991–2020 monthly records, Ruzyně averaged about 17 days a year with at least 1 cm of snow on the ground, against about six in the Old Town, while the Klementinum logged roughly 16 days a year of 30 °C or more against under 10 at Ruzyně. The centre is warmer by day and noticeably warmer by night.
That gap shapes two decisions. In summer, central rooms stay warm overnight: the Klementinum averaged about six nights a year when the temperature never fell below 20 °C, all between June and August, so check for air conditioning or a courtyard-facing room when you book in the old centre. In winter, a hotel near the airport or in the western suburbs will feel colder and icier on the walk to the tram than an Old Town forecast suggests.
| 1991–2020 average | Klementinum (Old Town) | Ruzyně (airport) |
|---|---|---|
| Elevation | 191 m | 364 m |
| January high / low | 3.9 °C / −0.5 °C | 1.9 °C / −3.5 °C |
| July high / low | 26.5 °C / 16.6 °C | 24.6 °C / 13.1 °C |
| Rain per year | 454 mm | 495 mm |
| Sunshine per year | 1,717 hours | 1,804 hours |
| Days with ≥1 cm of snow lying | About 6 | About 17 |
| Days of 30 °C or more | 16 | 9.5 |
Is spring a good time to visit Prague?
Link to this answerSpring warms Prague fast. March highs average 10 °C, April reaches 16 °C with only about 25 mm of rain, and May climbs to 21 °C. May is the standout month for culture, with the Prague Spring music festival and the city marathon, but it is also when rainfall starts to rise sharply.
The Prague Spring festival has been held every May since 1946, with around three dozen concerts. The 2026 edition opened on 12 May with Smetana’s My Country and an open-air programme in Riegrovy sady (festival programme), and the festival’s site says tickets for the 82nd festival in 2027 go on sale on 4 November 2026. If a concert is the reason for your trip, book your room as soon as you hold tickets.
Runners, and anyone sleeping in the Old Town, should note the first weekend of May 2027. Prague City Tourism lists the Prague International Marathon for Sunday 2 May 2027, starting at 08:00 on Old Town Square, with family races on 1 May. Check the route before relying on a taxi that morning.
Easter Sunday is 28 March in 2027, so Good Friday (26 March) and Easter Monday (29 March) are public holidays, and Czech schools are off from 25 to 29 March, according to the 2026–27 school calendar. Prague’s spring school breaks are 22–28 February 2027 for schools in Praha 1–5 and 1–7 March for Praha 6–10. Labour Day (1 May) and Liberation Day (8 May) are also on the Czech public holiday list; both fall on Saturdays in 2027.
What is Prague like in summer?
Link to this answerSummer is Prague’s warmest, wettest and longest-lit season. July averages 26.5 °C highs, about seven days of 30 °C or more and 67 mm of rain over nine wet days. Czech schools break from 1 July to 31 August 2027, and two public holidays fall on 5 and 6 July.
Heat is the main summer risk. At the Klementinum, the 1991–2020 record averages 3.6 days of 30 °C or more in June, 6.8 in July and 4.9 in August, and ČHMÚ’s 2024 yearbook noted that year’s first 30 °C day on 7 April, the earliest on record, with Praha-Komořany among the three stations to reach it. Plan castle climbs and long walks for the morning, and keep a museum, a river trip or a shaded park for the afternoon.
Summer rain is heavier than winter rain: a wet July day averages more than 7 mm, against about 3 mm on a wet January day, using the same ČHMÚ records. Showers rarely wipe out a whole trip, but they can wipe out an afternoon, so book timed tickets for indoor sights such as the castle interiors (see is Prague Castle worth it?) with that in mind.
Saints Cyril and Methodius Day (5 July) and Jan Hus Day (6 July) fall on a Monday and Tuesday in 2027, giving Czechs a four-day weekend, and Czech summer school holidays run from 1 July to 31 August 2027 (school calendar). Families should read Prague with kids, and anyone wanting cooler air can escape on one of the best day trips from Prague.
Is autumn the best time to visit Prague?
Link to this answerEarly autumn is, in our view, Prague’s best all-round season. September still averages 20 °C highs with only 34 mm of rain, October cools to 14 °C, and November turns grey, with about 52 hours of sunshine. Mid-October brings the free Signal light festival, and the Petřín funicular reopened in September 2026.
September is the sweet spot in the ČHMÚ figures: 168 hours of sunshine, under seven rain days and almost no days above 30 °C. October halves the sunshine to about 111 hours and its nights average 7.8 °C, so pack a warm layer for evenings by the river. November is nearly as dull as December, level with January at about 52 hours of sunshine.
The Signal Festival ran on four evenings, 15–18 October 2026, turning façades and public spaces in the centre and Dejvice into free light installations, with a paid indoor zone; 2027 dates had not been published when we checked. Autumn also has three public holidays: Czech Statehood Day on 28 September, Independence Day on 28 October and Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day on 17 November (Czech holiday list). Czech schools add an autumn break on 29–30 October 2026.
After a two-year reconstruction, the Petřín funicular resumed service on 22 September 2026, reached by trams 9, 12, 15, 20, 22 and 23 to Újezd. PID’s ticket page says 24- and 72-hour tickets are valid on it but 30- and 90-minute tickets are not; a single ride costs 100 CZK at the station or 90 CZK in the Lítačka app. Compare that with the Prague Card if you plan a lot of sightseeing.
Is Prague worth visiting in winter and at Christmas?
Link to this answerYes, if you dress for it. From late November the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Christmas markets run until 6 January, while January highs average only 3.9 °C, with about 15 frosty nights and roughly 52 hours of sunshine. Once the markets close, January and February trade festive buzz for cold, dark days.
Prague City Tourism lists both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, with Wenceslas Square open 10:00–22:00. It describes the Old Town market as one of the largest and most visited holiday events in the Czech Republic, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors with stalls of Czech crafts, food and a daily cultural programme. Browse on a weekday morning and save the lit tree for an evening walk.
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and 26 December are all public holidays, as is 1 January (Czech holiday list), and Czech schools are off from 23 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Expect some shops, restaurants and attractions to change their hours over those days, and check opening times before you plan around them.
The cold is real but rarely extreme in the centre. Over 1991–2020 the Klementinum averaged about 15 January nights below 0 °C and six or seven days that stayed below freezing all day, yet only about two January days with at least 1 cm of snow lying, so a white Prague is a bonus rather than a promise. Build each day around one long indoor visit; Prague in the rain works for cold days too.
Which holidays and school breaks affect Prague dates in 2026–27?
Link to this answerCzech public holidays and school breaks are worth checking before you fix dates, because they stack with Prague’s big events. For 2026–27 the key windows are Christmas to New Year, the February and March spring breaks, Easter week, the early-May holidays and the July–August summer break. The table lists each one.
Public holidays come from the Czech foreign ministry’s holiday list, school breaks from the Ministry of Education calendar as reported by Finance.cz, and event dates from the organisers linked elsewhere on this page. Prague’s spring break depends on the district where a school sits, which is why it covers two separate weeks.
If you travel from abroad, your own school holidays matter just as much, because they decide when flights from home fill up. Where your dates overlap with both, choose a refundable room rate early and pick a base near a metro station using where to stay in Prague.
| Dates | Occasion | Notes |

When should you visit Prague for your kind of trip?
Link to this answerFirst-timers should aim for mid-May to June or September. Music lovers should target May for the Prague Spring festival, Christmas-market fans late November to early January, and heat-averse travellers April, May or late September. Families tied to school holidays can make July and August work by planning early starts.
The table matches each kind of trip to the climate and calendar above. It describes weather and events, not prices: room rates move with demand on your exact dates, so compare the same dates across a few nights before you commit.
Families should read Prague with kids, visitors with mobility needs should check step-free access in European cities for wheelchair users, and anyone planning a castle-town add-on should weigh whether the Český Krumlov day trip is worth it before fixing the order of nights.
| Traveller | Best window | Why | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time visitor | Mid-May to June, September | 20–24 °C afternoons, long days, busy cultural calendar | Book early around Prague Spring and the marathon |
| Budget-minded | January–February outside school breaks, early March, November | No headline festivals competing for rooms | Short, cold days; plan indoor sights |
| Families | June or early September if school allows; otherwise July–August | Longest days, parks and river trips | About 5–7 days of 30 °C or more in each of July and August |
| Heat-averse or less mobile | April–May, September to early October | Highs of 14–21 °C and little heat risk | April and October evenings are cool |
| Christmas markets | 28 Nov 2026–6 Jan 2027, ideally weekdays | Both main squares in market mode | Frosty nights and about 50 hours of sunshine a month |
| Classical music | May | Prague Spring festival | Tickets go on sale 4 November 2026 |
| Photographers | June and mid-October | Long June evenings; Signal light festival | Signal dates for 2027 not yet published |
How far ahead should you book Prague, and what will you pay on top?
Link to this answerBook as soon as your dates are fixed if they touch the Christmas markets, the Prague Spring festival or the marathon weekend; for January, February or November, a refundable rate leaves room to wait. Budget for Prague’s accommodation fee too: 50 CZK per person per night for guests aged 18 and over.
Prague’s local accommodation fee is set by city decree No. 18/2019 at 50 CZK per person for each started day of a stay, excluding the arrival day, for guests aged 18 and over, on stays of up to 60 consecutive days, and the accommodation provider collects it, according to Prague 7’s guidance. Prague 1 proposed in March 2025 that the legal cap be raised to 200 CZK, but we found no change to the 50 CZK rate when we checked in October 2026. Check whether your booking total includes it.
Transport is cheap to budget for. PID’s ticket page lists a 24-hour ticket at 150 CZK on paper or 140 CZK in the Lítačka app, and a 72-hour ticket at 350 CZK or 340 CZK; the Airport Express is the exception, at 200 CZK and not covered by those passes (PID airport page). Getting around Prague covers the network, and the 7-day itinerary suits longer stays.
Ad · search Prague stays for your dates on Booking.com or Agoda. No property is preselected; check the street address against the nearest metro or tram stop and whether the 50 CZK accommodation fee is included before paying.

What is the verdict on the best time to visit Prague?
Link to this answerGo from mid-May to June or in September for the best balance of warmth, daylight and things to do. Choose late November to early January for the Christmas markets, April or October for cooler walking weather away from the big festival dates, and avoid July and August only if heat is a real problem for you.
In one line: September is the safest single month, May the best for culture, December the best for atmosphere and January to February the quietest on the event calendar. Whichever you choose, the Old Town will be warmer than the airport forecast suggests, and summer rain arrives in short, heavy bursts rather than long grey days.
Next, pick a neighbourhood in where to stay in Prague, plan the sights with things to do in Prague, and if you are combining cities by rail, compare Vienna to Prague by train or plane and the best time to visit Budapest.
