When is the best time to visit Riyadh?

On climate alone, go between November and February, when National Center for Meteorology normals give average highs of 20–28°C. March is warm but showery, and May to September is extreme heat. As of 16 October 2026, though, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh province, so postpone leisure trips.

Riyadh has a desert climate of very hot, dry summers and short, mild winters. The WMO climate page for Riyadh, which publishes the National Center for Meteorology’s 1982–2011 averages, shows January highs of 20.1°C and lows of 6.9°C, against highs of 43.7°C in July and August. Almost all the year’s rain falls between November and May, and June to September average none at all.

Right now, safety matters more than timing. The FCDO, in advice updated on 15 October 2026, advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh province and to every Saudi airport except Medina, following a serious incident at King Khalid International Airport on 10 October. The next section explains what that means; the rest of this page is for planning a trip once the advice changes.

When you do have dates, pair this page with where to stay in Riyadh, the Riyadh 3-day itinerary and the Riyadh destination guide.

Should you travel to Riyadh right now?

Link to this answer

Not for a holiday. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh province and all Saudi airports except Medina, warns that further attacks on airports and flight cancellations are very likely, and notes that travelling against its advice can invalidate travel insurance. King Khalid International Airport operations were also suspended after attacks.

According to the FCDO, the Houthis have launched missiles and drones at locations in Saudi Arabia since 13 July, and British nationals should stay away from King Khalid International Airport until it is secure. Saudi aviation authority figures reported by Khaleej Times put the death toll from the 10 October attack at 12, with 309 injured. The FCDO suggests that anyone leaving the country consider travelling overland to a neighbouring country and flying from there.

Flights are disrupted too. TradeArabia, via Zawya, reported that the airport’s suspension was extended until Saturday 17 October, that Etihad had cancelled Abu Dhabi to Riyadh flights until 19 October, and that Air France-KLM had suspended Riyadh services until the end of October. If a flight of yours is cancelled, our Saudi Arabia flight delay compensation guide explains what you can and cannot claim.

If your travel is essential, sign up for FCDO email alerts, follow the instructions of Saudi authorities, and get written confirmation that your insurer will cover the trip. Book only refundable stays and flights. Everything below assumes the advice has been lifted, or that you are planning a later season.

What is Riyadh’s weather like month by month?

Link to this answer

Riyadh’s average highs climb from 20.1°C in January to 43.7°C in July and August, with nights still around 26°C in midsummer. Rain is light and seasonal: March and April are the showeriest months, with about 10 and 12 rain days, while June to September are effectively dry.

The table uses the National Center for Meteorology normals published by WMO for 1982–2011. A rain day is any day with at least 0.1 mm of rain, a very low threshold, so with monthly totals this small most rain days bring short showers rather than washouts. The figures are 30-year averages, not forecasts.

Two patterns stand out. The comfortable window is narrow, roughly November to March, and the heat builds quickly: average highs jump from 33.3°C in April to 39.4°C in May. And although total rainfall is small, the FCDO warns that heavy rains between November and February can cause flooding.

Why are November to February the best months to visit?

Link to this answer

These four months combine average highs between 20°C and 28°C with cool evenings, which suits walking Diriyah, the old city and outdoor dining. Riyadh Season’s ten-week programme also falls mostly in this window. Bring a warm layer: January nights average 6.9°C, and occasional heavy rain can cause local flooding.

From the WMO normals: November averages 28.1°C highs, December 22.1°C, January 20.1°C and February 23.3°C. Each month has four to six rain days, but monthly totals stay at or below 17 mm. That makes daytime sightseeing comfortable and evenings at Diriyah’s At-Turaif, which opens daily from 5pm to midnight, cool to chilly after dark.

Late October to December overlaps with Riyadh Season, so expect events, traffic around the zones and more competition for rooms on big nights. January and February fall outside the 2026 season’s announced ten weeks, which suits travellers who want heritage sights rather than events.

Pack for contrasts rather than heat: a jacket for evenings, comfortable shoes for At-Turaif’s lanes, and clothing that meets Saudi norms. The FCDO says men and women should wear loose clothing that covers the elbow and falls below the knee, and that women do not have to wear an abaya or cover their hair.

Is March or April a good time to visit?

Link to this answer

March is a good second choice, with average highs near 28°C, though it brings some of Riyadh’s showeriest weeks. April is warmer at about 33°C and the wettest month on average, so keep afternoons flexible. Ramadan also moves through this part of the year; in 2026 it began on 18 February.

The WMO normals give March 21.8 mm over 9.8 rain days and April 26.3 mm over 12.4 rain days, the highest figures of the year. Plan an indoor alternative for each afternoon, such as a museum or mall, and keep outdoor time flexible.

Ramadan shifts about 11 days earlier each year. The FCDO says it began on 18 February in 2026 and lasts 30 days, so in 2027 it will fall mostly in February and early March, with exact dates set by the moon. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum in public in daytime, including in your car.

Ramadan evenings can be a memorable time to visit, with gatherings after sunset, but attractions may change their hours. Read Ramadan travel planning and is Riyadh Muslim-friendly? before you book.

How hot is Riyadh in summer, and can you still visit?

Link to this answer

Very hot. Average highs are 42.6°C in June and 43.7°C in July and August, nights stay around 25–26°C, and there is essentially no rain. Essential trips are manageable with air-conditioned transport and evening plans, but outdoor sightseeing in the middle of the day carries a real risk of heat illness.

The FCDO’s health advice warns of an increased risk of heat stroke and dehydration in summer and tells travellers to take adequate liquids and salts. Average lows in the WMO normals stay above 25°C from June to August, so evenings bring relief rather than cool air.

If you must travel in summer, plan outdoor time after sunset. Diriyah’s At-Turaif opens only from 5pm, and Bujairi Terrace stays open until midnight or 1am, according to Diriyah’s visitor page. Use museums and malls in the daytime and keep transfers in air-conditioned cars.

May and September are not shoulder months in any comfortable sense: their average highs are 39.4°C and 40.6°C. October is the real turning point, averaging 35.5°C, with evenings cooling to around 18°C.

When is Riyadh Season 2026, and how does it affect a trip?

Link to this answer

Riyadh Season 2026 was announced to open on Wednesday 21 October and run for about ten weeks, with boxing, UFC, tennis, concerts, theatre and zones such as Boulevard World and Boulevard City. It fills evenings and event venues across the city, so book big nights early and check that events are going ahead.

Gulf News, in a report last updated on 27 September 2026, said the General Entertainment Authority’s chairman had announced the 21 October opening of the seventh edition, under the slogan Big Time. Zones named include Boulevard World, with new Netherlands, Portugal and Yemen pavilions, Boulevard City, Wonder Garden, The Groves and the Ana Arabia exhibition at VIA Riyadh.

That announcement predates the October attacks on King Khalid International Airport, and we found no official statement since on whether the programme will change. On 16 October 2026 the official Riyadh Season site still carried 2025 branding. Check ticket pages and news before travelling for an event.

For travellers who are not going for events, the season is mostly a planning factor: expect busier roads and venues around big fixtures, and late finishes in the zones. If heritage is your focus, January and February offer similar weather with fewer event nights.

Which months suit which kind of traveller?

Link to this answer

Heritage and walking trips fit December to February; event-goers should target Riyadh Season’s late-October-to-December run; families wanting warm but bearable days can use November or March. Business travellers often have no choice, so summer visits need indoor plans. Everyone should check FCDO advice first while the current warning stands.

The table summarises the trade-offs using the climate normals and event dates on this page. Whichever window you choose, keep bookings refundable until you are confident the FCDO advice and flight schedules allow the trip.

Travellers combining Riyadh with Umrah should plan the pilgrimage separately. The Saudi eVisa portal says the tourist visa covers leisure, events, family visits and Umrah outside Hajj, and our Umrah DIY vs package guide compares the two approaches.

What should you sort out before any Riyadh trip?

Check the FCDO advice, then your visa: UK and many other passport holders can use Saudi Arabia’s tourist eVisa, valid for a year with stays of up to 90 days in total. Your passport needs six months’ validity. Pack for the dress code, leave alcohol at home, and buy insurance that covers your dates.

The official eVisa portal says nationals of 68 eligible countries, including the UK, US, Canada and Australia, can apply online for a one-year, multiple-entry visa allowing up to 90 days in the country. The FCDO adds that it includes health insurance up to SAR 100,000, that you can also apply on arrival at international airports, and that your passport must be valid for six months from arrival.

The FCDO also warns that you may be refused entry if your passport shows travel to, or birth in, Israel. Its laws and customs section says not to bring alcohol into the country, that it is illegal to photograph government buildings, palaces and military installations, and that public displays of affection should be avoided. For mosque visits, read the religious site etiquette guide.

So when should you go to Riyadh?

Link to this answer

Wait until the FCDO lifts its advice against all but essential travel to Riyadh province. Then aim for late November to February for the best weather, or late October to December if Riyadh Season events are the draw. March is a sound backup. Avoid June to August unless your trip is essential.

Riyadh’s climate gives it a short, clear season, and its events calendar is concentrated in the same months. When the advice changes, book flexible rates first and confirm event dates before committing to anything non-refundable.

For a first visit, three days covers Diriyah, the old city and Olaya; see the 3-day itinerary, the 7-day itinerary and things to do in Riyadh. Choose a base with where to stay in Riyadh and Riyadh hotels.
