Where should you stay in Riyadh?

For a first trip, stay in Olaya: it sits on metro Line 1 and puts you near Riyadh’s business, dining and shopping core. Choose Diriyah for heritage evenings at At-Turaif, Al Murabba for the old city and museums, and KAFD for business. The FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh province.

Riyadh is a large city built around cars, and its metro is the main thing that changes where a visitor should sleep. Gulf News described the network at launch in December 2024 as six colour-coded lines covering 176 km, with Line 1 (Blue) along Al Olaya and Al Batha roads and Line 4 (Yellow) along King Khalid International Airport Road. A hotel within walking distance of a station saves a lot of taxi time.

Diriyah, the UNESCO-listed first capital of the Saudi dynasty north-west of the centre, is a different kind of base: geared to evenings, since At-Turaif opens at 5pm, and best reached by car. KAFD and the event zones suit specific trips rather than general sightseeing.

This guide compares six areas and does not rank hotels. Shortlists with dated guest scores are on Riyadh hotels, and the Riyadh destination guide covers the wider city.

Should you book a Riyadh hotel now?

Only for essential travel, and only on refundable terms. The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Riyadh province and all Saudi airports except Medina, and asks British nationals to stay away from King Khalid International Airport. Leisure travellers should wait for the advice to change before committing to dates.

The FCDO’s Saudi Arabia page, updated on 15 October 2026, follows a serious incident at King Khalid International Airport on 10 October and warns that further attacks against airports, with disruption and cancellations, are very likely. It also says travelling against FCDO advice may invalidate your travel insurance. TradeArabia, via Zawya, reported airport operations suspended until 17 October.

For essential trips, choose a hotel away from the airport corridor, confirm the property can arrange transport, and keep a written record of the cancellation terms. The FCDO’s wider advice applies across the city: follow the instructions of Saudi authorities, stay away from military and oil facilities, and shelter indoors if told to.

How do Riyadh’s main areas compare?

Olaya offers the best all-round mix of metro access, restaurants and hotel choice. Al Murabba and Al Batha are closest to the old city’s museums and souqs. Diriyah is the atmospheric heritage choice but needs a car, KAFD suits business trips, and the Boulevard zones only make sense for event nights.

Transit notes use Gulf News’s guide to the metro at launch; check current stations and timings in the Darb app, through which the article says tickets are sold. Diriyah details come from Diriyah’s own visitor page. Price feel is qualitative; check live totals for your dates.

Walking is seasonal in Riyadh. WMO normals from the National Center for Meteorology average 43.7°C highs in July and August, so treat every area as a taxi-and-metro area from May to September.

Why is Olaya the best first-time base?

Link to this answer

Olaya runs along King Fahd Road and Olaya Street, the commercial spine of modern Riyadh, with towers, malls and a wide choice of restaurants. Metro Line 1 follows Al Olaya road south to Al Batha, putting the old city a short ride away, and taxis to Diriyah and KAFD are straightforward.

The metro is Olaya’s big advantage. Gulf News reported standard fares at launch of SR4 for a two-hour pass, SR20 for three days and SR40 for seven days, bought in the Darb app and shown as a QR code at the gates; first-class passes cost more. Fares may have changed since, so check the app.

The trade-offs are traffic and scale. Olaya’s main roads are wide and busy, and crossing them on foot is unpleasant in heat. In the cool months, short walks between a hotel, a mall and a metro station are realistic; from May to September, plan door-to-door rides.

Olaya is also the most practical base for business visitors who are not working inside KAFD, and for anyone mixing museums, Diriyah and dining. Food ideas near your base are on Riyadh eats.

Should you stay in Al Murabba or Al Batha near the old city?

Link to this answer

Stay here if Riyadh’s history is your priority. The old centre holds the Masmak fort, the National Museum and traditional souqs, and metro Line 1 links Al Batha with Olaya. Choose by recent reviews rather than star ratings, and expect to take taxis in the evening for dining elsewhere.

We could not open the Saudi Museums Commission’s or Visit Saudi’s pages from outside the kingdom on 16 October 2026, so we do not quote opening hours for the National Museum or Masmak here; check them locally the week you travel. What matters for choosing a base is that both sit in the historic core, a short taxi ride from Olaya.

Photography rules matter here more than elsewhere: the FCDO says it is illegal to film or photograph government buildings, diplomatic premises, military installations and palaces, and that you should photograph local people only with their consent. Ask before taking pictures in the souqs.

If you prefer a calmer hotel, sleep in Olaya and spend a morning here instead; the Riyadh 3-day itinerary builds a full old-city day.

Is Diriyah worth staying in?

Link to this answer

Yes, if heritage evenings are the heart of your trip. At-Turaif, the UNESCO-listed first capital of the Saudi dynasty, opens daily from 5pm to midnight, and Bujairi Terrace stays open late. The catch is distance: Diriyah lies north-west of central Riyadh, and 2026 road works have closed several access routes.

Diriyah’s visitor page lists At-Turaif as open daily from 5pm to midnight, with last entry at 11pm; Bujairi Terrace from 9am to midnight Saturday to Tuesday and to 1am Wednesday to Friday; and Zallal from 9am to midnight Sunday to Thursday and to 1am on Friday and Saturday. UNESCO describes At-Turaif as the first capital of the Saudi dynasty, founded in the 15th century, and an outstanding example of the Najdi architectural style.

The same page lists 2026 road closures, including King Khaled Road southbound from 14 June and King Khaled Branch Road from 29 May, with diversions mapped. Parking costs SAR 10 an hour at Samhan, and valet is SAR 195 for cars dropped after 3pm unless you qualify for the diners’ offer. Diriyah also asks visitors to buy access passes only through its official channels.

Diriyah promotes on-site stays, and the area suits couples and culture-focused travellers who will spend most evenings there. Business visitors and anyone relying on the metro should stay in Olaya and visit by taxi.

When do KAFD or the Boulevard area make sense?

Link to this answer

KAFD makes sense when your meetings are there: it is a mixed-use district with hotels, restaurants, shops and the KAFD Grand Mosque. The Boulevard and other Riyadh Season zones make sense only for event-focused trips during the season, which was announced to open on 21 October 2026 and run about ten weeks.

KAFD’s own site presents the district as a place where work, living and leisure come together, listing luxury hotel stays, dining, wellness and retail, along with landmarks such as PIF Tower and the KAFD Grand Mosque, which it says offers 1,466 prayer spaces. It is a polished, self-contained base, but some distance from the old city and Diriyah.

For the 2026 season, Gulf News named zones including Boulevard World, Boulevard City, Wonder Garden and The Groves. Staying near a zone shortens late-night journeys home, but out of season the advantage disappears. Check event status before booking, because the season announcement predates the October attacks on the airport.

How do you get around, and what about the airport?

Link to this answer

Use the metro where it fits and taxis or ride-hailing for the rest; Riyadh is not a walking city in heat. Metro Line 4 runs along the airport road, but airport operations were suspended after the October attacks and the FCDO says to stay away until it is secure, so check your routing.

If you plan to drive, the FCDO warns that driving standards are poor and that there are a high number of serious accidents, and advises travelling in convoy and in daylight through desert areas. Most short-stay visitors are better off with taxis or ride-hailing, plus the metro for longer runs along Olaya.

While King Khalid International Airport is closed or restricted, the FCDO suggests that travellers leaving Saudi Arabia consider going overland to a neighbouring country and flying from there; check the current routing with your airline. According to TradeArabia’s report, Etihad, among others, cancelled Riyadh flights until 19 October.

Which local rules affect your stay?

Dress modestly, with loose clothing covering elbows and knees for men and women; women do not need an abaya or headscarf. Do not bring alcohol, since possessing it can lead to prison. Unmarried tourists may share a hotel room. Avoid public affection, respect Ramadan daytime rules and ask before photographing people.

All of these points come from the FCDO’s laws and customs section, which also says same-sex relations are illegal, that sex outside marriage is illegal, including for tourists, and that criticising the King, the government or Islam can lead to prosecution. Read it in full before you travel.

For Muslim travellers, mosques and halal food are everyday infrastructure; is Riyadh Muslim-friendly? and what a halal-friendly hotel means cover hotel questions, and the religious site etiquette guide covers mosque visits. During Ramadan, the FCDO asks visitors not to eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in daytime; see Ramadan travel planning.

What should you check before booking a Riyadh hotel?

Link to this answer

Check that the rate is fully refundable, that your insurance is valid for your dates while FCDO advice stands, and that the hotel’s exact location suits your transport, ideally near a metro station. Confirm parking or transfers if you will visit Diriyah, and whether Riyadh Season event nights coincide with your stay.

Visas come first: the Saudi eVisa portal offers a one-year, multiple-entry tourist visa with stays of up to 90 days for 68 eligible nationalities, and the FCDO says it includes health insurance up to SAR 100,000. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.

The links below open provider searches, not properties we have inspected. Compare the same room type and total price on both, check the map pin rather than the district name in the listing, and save the cancellation terms. For the timing of a later trip, read best time to visit Riyadh.
