Desk-researched guide, checked 16 October 2026; not a personally tested trip. Weather figures are 1991–2020 averages for Toronto Pearson (Airport), not forecasts, and 2027 event dates appear only where organisers had published them.

Best time to visit Toronto, from Environment Canada 1991–2020 normals: warm June–September, snowy winters, plus TIFF, Carnival and CNE dates for 2026–27.

Key takeaways

When is the best time to visit Toronto?

Link to this answer

For most visitors the best time to visit Toronto is June to September, when Environment Canada’s 1991–2020 normals at Pearson airport show average highs of 22–27°C and all three island ferry routes are running. September is the best balance after the summer peak. January and February are coldest, with highs just below freezing.

Toronto’s seasons are defined by temperature, not rain. At Toronto Pearson (Airport), the station Environment and Climate Change Canada uses for its 1991–2020 normals, the average daily high runs from −1.2°C in January to 27.4°C in July, while precipitation stays between about 50mm and 81mm in every month (ECCC Canadian Climate Normals 1991–2020). What changes is the form it takes: January averages 31.5cm of snow, July none.

Weather figures on this page come from those normals. Event dates come from Destination Toronto and the organisers, and ferry schedules, public holidays and taxes from the City of Toronto and the Governments of Ontario and Canada, checked on 16 October 2026. Where an organiser had not published 2027 dates, we say so rather than guess, and nothing here is a forecast.

Once you have a month, choose a base with where to stay in Toronto, plan a week with the Toronto 7-day itinerary or a short break with the 3-day plan, and check entry rules in Canada eTA for UK travellers.

What is Toronto’s weather like month by month?

Link to this answer

Toronto swings from a January average high of −1.2°C to 27.4°C in July at Pearson airport. Precipitation is steady at roughly 50–81mm a month, with much of it falling as snow from December to March. July averages 7.7 days above 30°C, while about 17 January days never climb above 0°C.

The table turns the ECCC normals for Toronto Pearson (Airport) into a planning view. “Wet days” are days with at least 0.2mm of rain or melted snow, and highs and lows are averages of daily maximum and minimum temperatures over 1991–2020. Downtown runs a little milder: the composite Toronto (City) station averages a January low of −6.7°C against −8.9°C at Pearson, and a July low of 18.1°C against 16.6°C (ECCC, Toronto City).

Snow is the defining winter feature. Pearson averages 114.5cm of snowfall a year, with measurable snow on 44.7 days, and at least 1cm of snow lies on the ground on 21.0 days in January and 20.4 in February. The average last spring frost falls on 27 April and the first autumn frost on 20 October, a frost-free period of 174 days (ECCC).

Heavy rain is a summer event rather than a winter one. Days with 10mm or more of precipitation peak at 3.0 in June, and the wettest single day of the 1991–2020 period, 126mm, fell in July. Summer heat is often humid: Environment Canada counts 18.3 days with a humidex of 30 or more in an average July (ECCC).

Is summer the best time to visit Toronto?

Link to this answer

Summer is the warmest and busiest time. July averages 27.4°C highs, 30.5 days above 20°C and 18.3 days with a humidex of 30 or more. June to August bring Pride, the Caribbean Carnival, the CNE, all three island ferry routes and patio season, so book rooms early and plan around thunderstorms.

Heat builds quickly. Pearson averages 3.4 days above 30°C in June, 7.7 in July and 4.0 in August, and days with a humidex of 35 or more average 8.0 in July (ECCC). Nights stay warm downtown, where the July average low is 18.1°C (ECCC, Toronto City). Put long walks in the morning and evening, and keep air-conditioned galleries for the middle of the afternoon.

The UK government notes that summer thunderstorms are frequent in most parts of Canada between April and September, and that June to July is the peak tornado season in southern Ontario (FCDO). It also notes a particular wildfire risk in Ontario’s forested areas in summer and points travellers to the Government of Canada’s smoke and air-quality information. Storms usually pass quickly but can pause ferries and outdoor events.

Summer is festival season. In 2026, Destination Toronto listed Pride Month for all of June with the parade on 28 June (Destination Toronto), Luminato from 3 to 28 June (Destination Toronto) and the Toronto Caribbean Carnival from 30 July to 3 August (Destination Toronto). The City’s summer ferry timetable runs from mid-May to mid-September on all three island routes (City of Toronto).

Are September and October good months to visit Toronto?

Link to this answer

Yes. September still averages 22.3°C highs and 19.7 days above 20°C, and the film festival fills King Street West in the middle of the month. October cools to 14.6°C highs, with the average first frost on 20 October. From 14 October the island ferries switch to a single winter route.

September is the best-balanced month in the normals: an average high of 22.3°C, 10.2 wet days and only 1.3 days above 30°C (ECCC). The CNE runs until Labour Day, and its 2027 dates are 20 August to 6 September (CNE). Thanksgiving falls on Monday 11 October 2027 and is one of Ontario’s nine public holidays (Government of Ontario).

The Toronto International Film Festival ran from 10 to 20 September 2026, centred on TIFF Lightbox with screenings at venues including Roy Thomson Hall and the Princess of Wales Theatre (Destination Toronto). Destination Toronto describes King Street West becoming a red-carpet hub every September (Destination Toronto), so nearby hotels and restaurants are in demand that fortnight. The 2027 dates were not on its listing when we checked.

October brings Nuit Blanche, a free all-night art festival that ran from 7pm on 3 October to 7am on 4 October in 2026 (Destination Toronto). The City’s winter ferry timetable starts on 14 October, when service drops to the Ward’s Island route only (City of Toronto); Ward’s Island is about a 35-minute walk from Centre Island (City of Toronto).

What is Toronto like from December to March?

Link to this answer

Cold and often snowy. January averages a −8.9°C low, 31.5cm of snow and 8.8 days with a wind chill below −20 at Pearson. Build days around museums, markets and the underground PATH, and enjoy the free Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square, which runs from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027.

The cold is manageable with proper layers. Pearson averages 16.9 days in January and 13.7 in February when the temperature never rises above 0°C, and a wind chill below −30 on about 1.8 January days (ECCC). The UK government warns that winter storms, including freezing rain, blizzards and hail, are frequent in many parts of Canada from November to April (FCDO).

Toronto has an indoor answer. Destination Toronto describes the PATH as the world’s largest underground shopping mall, with tunnels linking dozens of buildings, six hotels and five subway stations in the Financial District (Destination Toronto). The Royal Ontario Museum’s October 2026 calendar lists 10am to 5:30pm but shows it closed on ordinary Mondays, and open until 8:30pm, with free evening entry, on the third Tuesday (ROM), and the Art Gallery of Ontario closes on Mondays but stays open until 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays (AGO).

Winter events help. The Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square is free, with light installations, live music and skating, from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027 (Destination Toronto). Destination Toronto lists the Distillery Winter Village from November to January and Winterlicious, with prix fixe menus at more than 200 restaurants, from January to February (Destination Toronto); exact 2027 dates were not yet published.

Is spring a good time to visit Toronto?

Link to this answer

Spring is changeable but rewarding. March still averages 17.2cm of snow, April brings 12.5 wet days and the last frost around 27 April, and May reaches 19.2°C highs. High Park’s cherry blossoms usually appear between late April and early May, and the island ferries return to three routes from mid-April.

The thaw is gradual. Average highs are 5.0°C in March and 12.0°C in April at Pearson, and April still averages 2.2 days of measurable snowfall (ECCC). By May, 12.3 days on average reach 20°C, which makes late May one of the most comfortable times to walk the neighbourhoods and the waterfront before the summer humidity arrives.

Destination Toronto points to the Sakura watch in High Park between late April and early May, the Hot Docs documentary festival, which it calls North America’s largest, and Doors Open Toronto in May, when more than 150 historically and architecturally significant buildings open to visitors (Destination Toronto). Exact 2027 dates for these events had not been published when we checked.

Two practical dates matter. The City’s spring ferry timetable starts in mid-April with reduced trips on all three routes, and the summer timetable in mid-May (City of Toronto). Good Friday falls on 26 March 2027 and Victoria Day on Monday 24 May 2027, while Easter Monday is not one of Ontario’s public holidays (Government of Ontario).

Which Toronto events in 2026–27 affect crowds and prices?

Link to this answer

Still to come in 2026 are the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair (6–15 November) and the Cavalcade of Lights (from 28 November). For 2027, the CNE has announced 20 August to 6 September; TIFF, Pride and the Caribbean Carnival had not published 2027 dates on the pages we checked, so use their 2026 timing as a guide.

Toronto’s big events concentrate demand in particular districts rather than across the whole city. TIFF pulls people to King Street West and the Entertainment District, the CNE and the Royal fill Exhibition Place west of downtown, and Pride centres on downtown and the Church–Wellesley Village. If your dates are flexible, compare prices for the event week with the weeks either side.

Dates come from Destination Toronto’s annual events listings and the organisers, checked on 16 October 2026: the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair at Exhibition Place, the Cavalcade of Lights, the CNE, TIFF, Pride and the Toronto Caribbean Carnival, whose parade dances along Lakeshore Boulevard. Destination Toronto also lists the Toronto Waterfront Festival as paused for 2026 (Destination Toronto).

Which weather and practical risks should you plan for in Toronto?

Link to this answer

In winter, plan for snow, freezing rain and wind chill; in summer, humid heat, thunderstorms and the occasional wildfire-smoke day. Year-round, the practical risks are ferry queues on busy days, event-week prices and petty theft. None should stop a trip, but each changes how you pack and pace your days.

Winter storms affect travel more than daily life downtown. The UK government advises following local warnings, notes that highways are often closed by winter snowstorms in several provinces, and says hire companies often set stricter requirements, such as a higher minimum age (FCDO). If you plan to drive beyond the city in winter, read renting a car in Canada first; within Toronto, the subway and the PATH make a car unnecessary.

Ferry queues are the most common summer frustration. The City says peak times are 10am to 3pm towards the islands and 5pm to 9pm back to the city, when waits can exceed 30 to 60 minutes at weekends and on holidays, and that online ticket holders use an express line at the terminal (City of Toronto). Ward’s Island is the City’s suggested alternative to busy Centre Island.

On personal safety, the FCDO’s advice for Canada focuses on petty crime: do not leave bags unattended and keep valuables and your passport somewhere safe. It also says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Canada and advises staying aware of your surroundings and following local authorities (FCDO).

How do holidays and hotel taxes affect a Toronto booking?

Link to this answer

Ontario’s 2027 public holidays include Family Day (15 February), Good Friday (26 March), Victoria Day (24 May), Canada Day (1 July), Labour Day (6 September) and Thanksgiving (11 October). On hotel bills, expect Toronto’s 6% Municipal Accommodation Tax on the room, plus 13% HST, which also applies to that tax.

The Government of Ontario lists nine public holidays: New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It notes that employers are not required to give Easter Monday or the first Monday in August (2 August in 2027) as holidays, although some do. Both Christmas Day and Boxing Day are on the list, so check opening days for 25 and 26 December.

On tax, the City of Toronto’s temporary Municipal Accommodation Tax rate of 8.5% ended on 1 August 2026; hotels and short-term rentals now charge 6% on the room portion for stays of four hours or more, shown as a separate line on hotel invoices (City of Toronto). HST is also payable on the MAT portion (City of Toronto), and Ontario’s HST rate is 13% (Canada Revenue Agency).

British visitors flying to Canada usually need an Electronic Travel Authorization or a visa, not both (FCDO); the official eTA costs CAN$7 on the Government of Canada site. Book a cancellable room as soon as your dates are fixed, earlier for TIFF, the CNE or Pride weeks, and see cheap flights from Toronto for onward trips.

So which month should you choose for Toronto?

Link to this answer

Choose September for the best balance of warmth and city life, late May or June for long days before peak heat, and July or August for festivals and the islands. Choose December for lights and markets, and January to March only if you are happy to plan around snow, wind chill and indoor sights.

For most British visitors the deciding factor is cold, not rain. A January day at Pearson averages a high of −1.2°C and brings precipitation on 16.2 days of the month, much of it snow, while September averages 22.3°C and 10.2 wet days (ECCC). Pack for the month, not the city’s reputation: a warm coat in winter and light layers for humid summer evenings.

Next steps: pick a base with where to stay in Toronto, plan the arrival with YYZ to Toronto by UP Express or car, and choose sights with things to do in Toronto. The Toronto destination hub and Toronto hotels collect the rest.

  • Warmest weather: July, with 27.4°C average highs at Pearson
  • Best balance: September, with 22.3°C highs and 10.2 wet days
  • All three island ferry routes: mid-April to mid-October
  • Film festival: TIFF ran 10–20 September in 2026
  • Lights: Cavalcade of Lights, 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027
  • Coldest: January, with a −8.9°C average low and 31.5cm of snow
