Desk-researched suggested itinerary, checked 16–17 October 2026; not a personally tested route. Museum days, ferry timetables and CN Tower hours change, so confirm each stop for your dates.

A Toronto 3-day itinerary: the AGO and Kensington, an Islands ferry with the CN Tower at dusk, then St Lawrence Market and the Distillery, with Monday closures.

Key takeaways

How should you spend 3 days in Toronto?

Link to this answer

Spend day 1 downtown west: the Art Gallery of Ontario, Kensington Market and Queen West. Give day 2 to the lake, with a morning ferry to the Toronto Islands and the CN Tower at dusk. Use day 3 for St Lawrence Market and the Distillery District before UP Express. Avoid Mondays for days 1 and 3.

Three days is enough for Toronto’s headline sights if you stop trying to see everything. This plan keeps each day inside one compact area, walks or rides one streetcar between stops, and picks a single big museum rather than three. It leaves Niagara Falls, Casa Loma and the outer neighbourhoods for a longer stay, or for one deliberate swap explained below.

It is a desk-researched suggested route, not one we have walked end to end. Opening days come from the venues’ own pages, ferry rules from the City of Toronto and transit details from the TTC and UP Express, checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. Where a venue page would not load for us, we have relied on the version verified for our sibling Toronto guides the day before and said so in the source list.

For a slower week with Niagara by GO train, High Park and the Scarborough Bluffs, use the Toronto 7-day itinerary. To pick a hotel that suits this plan, read where to stay in Toronto: anywhere near Union, King or St Andrew stations keeps all three days walkable.

What does the 3-day Toronto plan look like at a glance?

Link to this answer

Day 1 is the AGO, Kensington Market and Queen West. Day 2 is the Islands ferry, the waterfront and the CN Tower at dusk. Day 3 is St Lawrence Market, the Distillery District and the train to Pearson. Each day has one booked anchor at most, and the order avoids the city’s Monday closures.

The table sets out each day’s anchor, what to book, the closed days that should decide your order, and an indoor swap. Day 2 is the most weather-dependent, so check the forecast and the ferry season before you fix it; days 1 and 3 work in rain or snow.

If your trip starts on a Monday, put day 2 first, because the Art Gallery of Ontario and St Lawrence Market’s South Market both close on Mondays (AGO, St Lawrence Market). A Tuesday-to-Thursday or Friday-to-Sunday trip runs in the order shown.

Which days of the week suit a 3-day Toronto trip?

Tuesday to Thursday or Friday to Sunday work best. Mondays are awkward: the AGO and St Lawrence Market’s South Market close, and the ROM’s October 2026 calendar showed it closed on ordinary Mondays. Saturdays add the early Farmers’ Market, and Wednesdays or Fridays let you finish day 1 with an evening at the AGO.

The AGO opens at 10:30am from Tuesday to Sunday, stays open until 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, and is closed on Mondays. The South Market at St Lawrence Market opens Tuesday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, Saturday from 7am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, and closes on Mondays, while the Farmers’ Market trades on Saturdays from 5am to 3pm. Both pages blocked our checks on 17 October, so these hours are as verified for our sibling guides on 16 October.

The Royal Ontario Museum is the useful wet-weather swap, but check its calendar. Its operating hours page listed 10am to 5:30pm on most October 2026 days, closures on Mondays 5, 19 and 26 October, opening on Thanksgiving Monday (12 October), and a late opening to 8:30pm on Tuesday 20 October, the third Tuesday, when evening entry from 4pm is free (ROM visitor information).

Holidays move things too. Ontario’s public holidays include Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so check every venue for 25 and 26 December, and expect the city to be busier over long weekends such as Victoria Day and Canada Day (Government of Ontario). Our best time to visit Toronto guide lists the 2027 dates.

Day 1: how do you combine the AGO, Kensington Market and Queen West?

Link to this answer

Arrive on UP Express, drop bags and walk up Bay Street past Nathan Phillips Square to the AGO for its 10:30am opening. After two hours, walk west to Kensington Market for lunch, then south to Queen West for Graffiti Alley and Trinity Bellwoods Park. Ride the 501 streetcar back downtown for dinner.

UP Express runs from Pearson’s Terminal 1 to Union every 15 minutes in 28 minutes, from 5:27am on weekdays and 6:24am at weekends (UP Express, schedules). If your room is not ready, Union’s SkyWalk has a BagsAway luggage service beside the platform (UP Express). On the way north, Nathan Phillips Square outside City Hall is where the free Cavalcade of Lights is held; the City says more than 1.8 million people a year attend events there (City of Toronto).

The AGO is at 317 Dundas Street West. Adult single-day admission is $30, and the first Wednesday night of each month is free from 6pm to 9pm if you book online in advance. Allow about two hours for a first visit, longer if the weather is poor; the gallery is the day’s indoor anchor, so the order can flip if rain is forecast for the morning only.

Kensington Market sits between Dundas Street West and College Street, west of Spadina Avenue, with grocers, street food, vintage shops and live music; on the last Sunday of each month from May to October, Pedestrian Sundays close its streets to cars (Destination Toronto). From there, walk south to Queen West for Graffiti Alley on Rush Lane and Trinity Bellwoods Park, then take the 501 Queen streetcar east (Destination Toronto).

Day 2: how do you fit the Toronto Islands and the CN Tower into one day?

Link to this answer

Catch a ferry from the Jack Layton terminal before 10am, spend the morning on Centre or Ward’s Island, and return before the 5pm rush. Walk west along Queens Quay past Harbourfront Centre and the Music Garden, then go up the CN Tower for sunset. The tower’s last entry is 9pm, so dusk works most of the year.

Ferries leave from 9 Queens Quay West. All three routes, to Centre Island, Hanlan’s Point and Ward’s Island, run from mid-April to mid-October, and from 14 October to mid-April only the Ward’s Island route operates (City of Toronto). An adult return costs $9.57; tickets bought online use an express line and stay valid until the end of the calendar year. The City says waits can exceed 30 to 60 minutes between 10am and 3pm outbound and 5pm and 9pm back, and suggests Ward’s Island, about 35 minutes’ walk from Centre Island, as the quieter option (City of Toronto).

Back on the mainland, Queens Quay West is lined with Harbourfront Centre, the Toronto Music Garden and the Power Plant gallery, and the Martin Goodman Trail runs along the shore (Destination Toronto). If you need an indoor hour, Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is at 288 Bremner Boulevard, in the Entertainment District beside the CN Tower (Ripley’s, Destination Toronto).

The CN Tower opens its observation levels from 10am to 11pm, with last entry at 9pm. In autumn 2026 it flagged an early closure on 20 October and adjusted Main Observation Level hours on 20, 21 and 27 October and 3 and 6 November, so check before you book a sunset slot. Dinner in the Entertainment District or King West keeps the evening on foot.

Day 3: how do you spend a last day in Old Town before your flight?

Link to this answer

Eat breakfast at St Lawrence Market, from 7am on Saturdays or 9am on weekdays, then walk east to the Distillery District’s Victorian brick lanes for galleries, coffee and lunch. Walk or ride the 504 streetcar back towards Union and leave 28 minutes for UP Express plus a generous buffer for check-in and security.

Destination Toronto calls the peameal bacon sandwich the market’s most popular draw, suggests Saturdays for the farmers’ market, and recommends King station and the 504 streetcar east or a walk along Front Street East from Union (Destination Toronto). The South Market closes on Mondays (St Lawrence Market), so a Monday departure day should start at the Distillery instead.

The Distillery District is a preserved Victorian industrial quarter of brick lanes, galleries, cafés and breweries (Destination Toronto). From November to January its Winter Village adds more than 65 merchants and a 55-foot Christmas tree (Destination Toronto); exact dates for 2026 had not been published on the pages we could check, and weekend evenings get crowded.

For the airport, trains leave Union for Pearson every 15 minutes and take 28 minutes (UP Express). UP Express flagged planned construction on 31 October and 1 November 2026, with GO buses replacing trains between Union Station Bus Terminal and Terminal 1 (UP Express), so allow extra time that weekend. Our YYZ to Toronto transfer guide compares the train with a booked car.

AGO, ROM or Casa Loma: which one museum should you choose?

Link to this answer

Choose the AGO if art and an easy walk to Kensington matter most; it is already on day 1. Choose the ROM for natural history and world cultures, especially on a free third-Tuesday evening. Choose Casa Loma, open daily from 9:30am to 5pm, if a historic castle appeals more than galleries. Three days rarely fit two.

The ROM is at 100 Queen’s Park, beside Museum station on Line 1; the museum suggests St George station if you need a lift (ROM visitor information). It prices tickets by day on its booking calendar rather than listing a single adult fare, so check the date you want. Swapping it in means riding Line 1 north from Union, then walking into Yorkville, a compact pocket of Victorian houses, cobbled lanes and designer shops (Destination Toronto).

Casa Loma, at 1 Austin Terrace, opens daily from 9:30am to 5pm and sells date-specific general admission tickets online. In October it also runs Legends of Horror after dark, ticketed separately, so daytime visits can coincide with event set-up. It is a longer trip from the waterfront than either museum, which is why the 7-day plan gives it a whole afternoon.

Whichever you choose, place it on the day with the worst forecast. On the 7-day plan the ROM, Yorkville and Casa Loma share a day; on a 3-day trip, one of them is enough.

Can you fit Niagara Falls into a 3-day Toronto trip?

Link to this answer

Only by giving up a whole Toronto day. A direct GO train from Union runs to Niagara Falls GO all year, and Niagara Parks sells GO+WEGO packages from $22 at weekends and $34 on weekdays. If the falls matter more than the islands, swap day 2; otherwise save Niagara for a longer stay.

GO Transit serves Niagara Falls GO seven days a week year-round and advises checking construction notices before travelling (GO Transit). Niagara Parks’ GO+WEGO packages include unlimited WEGO bus travel at the falls and start at $22 at weekends and $34 on weekdays (Niagara Parks); GO also sells a $10 One-Day pass for Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, without the WEGO bus (GO Transit). We did not find an official journey time on these pages, so check the trip planner for your train.

At the falls, Journey Behind the Falls takes you down 125 feet to tunnels and an observation deck at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, for $33 per adult before 13% HST. Add the walk along the brink and lunch, and the day is gone. Tour marketplaces sell coach day trips that cut out the connections, at the cost of a fixed schedule.

Our view: a first three-day trip is better spent in the city, with Niagara as the headline of a fourth day or of the 7-day itinerary, which gives it day 5 and a full morning at the falls.

How should winter, rain or summer heat change the plan?

Link to this answer

From mid-October to mid-April only the Ward’s Island ferry runs and January averages a −8.9°C low with 31.5cm of snow, so swap day 2’s islands for the ROM and use the underground PATH. In July, with about eight days above 30°C, do the islands early and save galleries for the afternoon.

The 1991–2020 normals for Toronto Pearson give a January average low of −8.9°C, 31.5cm of snow and 8.8 days with a wind chill below −20, against 7.7 days above 30°C in July (ECCC). The UK government notes frequent summer thunderstorms between April and September and winter storms, including freezing rain, from November to April (FCDO).

In cold weather the PATH is the downtown lifeline: Destination Toronto describes it as the world’s largest underground shopping mall, linking dozens of buildings, six hotels and five subway stations in the Financial District (Destination Toronto). Between 28 November 2026 and 7 January 2027, the free Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square adds light installations, music and skating to a winter evening on day 1 (Destination Toronto).

Rain affects only day 2 badly. Keep the CN Tower if visibility is reasonable, replace the ferry with the ROM or Ripley’s, and walk the waterfront between showers. Check best time to visit Toronto for month-by-month conditions.

How do you get around for three days, and which tours fit?

Walk, and tap a bank card or phone on the TTC: an adult fare is $3.30 with free transfers for two hours on the same card, and a PRESTO day pass costs $13.50. Most visitors need one booked product at most, such as a CN Tower ticket, a harbour cruise or a guided Kensington food walk.

The TTC charges $3.30 for an adult tap with PRESTO, a debit or credit card or a mobile wallet, and children 12 and under ride free. Subway trains on Lines 1 and 2 run every 2 to 3 minutes at rush hours and every 4 to 5 minutes otherwise (TTC Line 1). UP Express costs $12.35 one way for adults, or $9.25 with PRESTO or a tapped bank card (UP Express fares, PRESTO fares).

British visitors flying in usually need an Electronic Travel Authorization, which costs CAN$7 on the Government of Canada site. Apply only through that official page. On tours, keep each product inside its day: a food walk fits day 1, a harbour cruise or island bike rental fits day 2, and a Distillery walk fits day 3. Read GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook for how refunds differ.

Families can lean on the islands and the aquarium; art lovers can give the AGO a full day; travellers with limited mobility should base themselves near Union and use the PATH and streetcars rather than long walks. For more choices, see things to do in Toronto.
