When is the best time to visit Vienna?
Link to this answerSeptember is the best single month to visit Vienna: GeoSphere Austria’s 1991–2020 data average a 21.0°C high with only 0.5 days reaching 30°C, and the opera season restarts. Late April to early June comes next. Choose late November and December for Christmas markets, and January to February for balls and quieter streets.
Vienna sits where Atlantic and continental weather meet, which gives it four distinct seasons, each with its own cultural calendar. Our month-by-month figures are averages we calculated from GeoSphere Austria’s monthly station data for Wien Hohe Warte, 1991–2020: July averages a 27.1°C high, January a −1.3°C low, and the city sees about 2,040 hours of sunshine a year. WienTourismus sums it up: there is no rainy season, though summer storms lift rainfall in the hot months.
What you come for matters more than the thermometer. Opera and concert lovers should aim for the September to June season, market lovers for Advent, and dancers for the January and February ball season. Pair your dates with where to stay in Vienna and fill the days with things to do in Vienna; the Vienna destination guide has the overview.
Two practical changes affect 2026–27 trips: a long closure of the central S-Bahn line from 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, and a rise in Vienna’s tourist tax from 5% to 8% on 1 July 2027. Both are covered below, with sources.
- Best overall: September, then late April to early June
- Best for atmosphere: mid-November to Christmas
- Best for balls and quiet museums: January and February
- Hottest and stormiest: July and August
- Verdict: September for weather plus culture
What is Vienna’s weather like month by month?
Link to this answerVienna swings from a 3.6°C average high and −1.3°C low in January to 27.1°C and 16.4°C in July at Hohe Warte. Rain peaks from May to August, driven by summer storms, with July averaging 6.3 thunderstorm days. December is the gloomiest month, averaging 56 hours of sunshine against 274 in July.
The table shows TravelShifu averages of the 360 monthly values (January 1991 to December 2020) in GeoSphere Austria’s station dataset, klima-v2-1m, for Wien Hohe Warte in Döbling. WienTourismus uses the same station and period for its own charts. Rain days count days with at least 1 mm; hot days are days reaching 30°C.
The city centre is warmer than the table suggests. For GeoSphere’s Wien Innere Stadt station, the same 1991–2020 calculation gives a July mean low of 18.3°C rather than 16.4°C, and 26.9 days a year of 30°C or more rather than 20.9. If you are sensitive to heat, that matters when choosing a room in the 1st district.
Winter snow is real but modest. Hohe Warte averages 31.9 days a year with snow cover, most in January (11.4) and February (8.8), and WienTourismus notes Vienna gets less snow than the rest of Austria. For wet-day plans, see Vienna in the rain.

Is Vienna worth visiting for the Christmas markets?
Link to this answerYes, if you accept crowds and short, grey days. The Wiener Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz runs daily from 13 November to 26 December 2026, 10am to 10pm, with ice skating in the park. December averages only 56 hours of sunshine and highs near 4°C, so plan indoor afternoons and evening market visits.
WienTourismus lists the Rathausplatz market from 13 November to 26 December 2026, open 10:00 to 22:00. Wiener Eistraum runs its Christmas ice rink in the Rathauspark from 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Smaller markets add variety: the Art Advent market at Karlsplatz is known for crafts and organic food, according to WienTourismus.
Shopping hours shape a December weekend. WienTourismus says most shops open Monday to Friday until 6:30pm and on Saturdays until 5pm or 6pm, with Sunday shopping limited to large railway stations, the airport and museum shops. 8 December is a public holiday on which stores are open, per its holiday list.
The end of the year is the hardest time to get concert tickets. The Vienna Philharmonic allocates its Preview Performance (30 December), New Year’s Eve Concert and New Year’s Concert (1 January 2027) only by an online draw; applications for the 2026–27 concerts closed on 28 February 2026, so plan a year ahead.
What is Vienna like in January and February?
Link to this answerCold, quiet and ceremonial. Highs average 3.6°C in January, the Christmas crowds have gone, and the ball season’s best-known night, the Opera Ball, falls on 4 February 2027. Wiener Eistraum turns Rathausplatz into an ice rink from 22 January to 7 March 2027. Museums are calmer, but Vienna’s semester holidays bring local families out in early February.
The Vienna Opera Ball takes place on 4 February 2027 at the State Opera and is the best known of Vienna’s winter balls. Wiener Eistraum runs from 22 January to 7 March 2027 on Rathausplatz. Both make late January and February livelier than mid-March.
Watch the school calendar. Vienna’s Bildungsdirektion sets the semester holidays for Vienna and Lower Austria from 30 January to 6 February 2027, which brings more families to museums and the ice rink. Between the end of the Christmas holidays on 6 January and 30 January, Vienna has no school holidays at all.
Pack for frost. Hohe Warte averages 7.9 ice days in January, when the temperature stays below freezing all day, and 11.4 days with snow cover in our GeoSphere-based averages. Pavements can be icy, so choose a hotel close to a U-Bahn station; where to stay in Vienna compares districts by line.
Is spring a good time to visit Vienna?
Link to this answerYes, especially from late April. April averages a 17.0°C high with only 6.5 rain days, and May reaches 21.2°C with more showers. The Vienna City Marathon on 18 April 2027, Easter holidays from 20 to 29 March and the Wiener Festwochen in May and June shape crowds, so book around them.
Spring is when Vienna moves outdoors again. In our GeoSphere averages April has the fewest rain days of the year (6.5) and has 220 hours of sunshine, while May is warmer but has the most rain days of the year (9.4) and a jump in thunderstorms, to 4.0 storm days.
Events to plan around: the Vienna City Marathon takes place on 18 April 2027, with a supporting programme from 17 to 19 April, and the Wiener Festwochen fills May and June with theatre, opera, music and dance; 2027 dates had not been published when we checked. Austrian Easter holidays run from 20 to 29 March 2027, and Whitsun holidays from 15 to 17 May, per the Bildungsdirektion Wien.
Public holidays cluster in May 2027: 1 May, Ascension Day on 6 May, Whit Monday on 17 May and Corpus Christi on 27 May. Shops close on these days, so stock up the day before. Spring is ideal for day trips from Vienna to the Wachau or Bratislava.
Is summer too hot for Vienna?
Link to this answerIt can be. July and August average highs of about 27°C, with about 8 days a month of 30°C or more at Hohe Warte, and more in the city centre. Thunderstorms peak at the same time. Summer brings free open-air festivals, but the State Opera season pauses after June, so culture-led trips suit September better.
Heat is the main summer risk. Our GeoSphere averages give 8.4 hot days in July and 7.6 in August at Hohe Warte, and WienTourismus warns that particularly hot days can exceed 35°C. In late June 2026 a record heatwave hit the city; ORF reported that it prompted debate about moving the Donauinselfest, though organisers kept the 2027 festival on its usual weekend.
Summer events are big and often free: WienTourismus says admission to both the Film Festival and the Donauinselfest is free. The Donauinselfest runs from 25 to 27 June 2027, the Film Festival on Rathausplatz from 3 July to 5 September 2027 and ImPulsTanz from 8 July to 8 August 2027. Vienna’s school summer holidays run from 3 July to 5 September 2027, per the Bildungsdirektion.
Opera lovers should check dates first. The State Opera’s 2026–27 season opened with a free open-air gala in the Burggarten on 6 September 2026 and lists premieres as late as 11 June 2027, so July and August are not opera months. Families can use Vienna with kids for heat-proof ideas.
Why is September to October the sweet spot for Vienna?
Link to this answerEarly autumn combines summer’s warmth with fewer storms: September averages a 21.0°C high, 7.4 rain days and 193 hours of sunshine, and October cools to 14.7°C. The opera and concert season restarts, the Viennale film festival runs from 22 October to 3 November 2026, and summer school holidays are over.
September’s figures in our GeoSphere averages are the best balance of the year: warm afternoons, cool nights (12.1°C) and only 1.5 thunderstorm days compared with 6.3 in July. October brings shorter days and 129 hours of sunshine, but it is still good walking weather.
Culture returns in force. The State Opera stages around 50 operas and ballets a season and often sells out, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. The Viennale, Austria’s largest international film event, opens on 22 October 2026 at the Gartenbaukino and runs until 3 November.
Two dates catch visitors out. Austria’s National Day on 26 October and All Saints’ Day on 1 November are public holidays, and Vienna’s autumn school holidays run from 27 to 31 October 2026, per the Bildungsdirektion. Museums are likely to be busier that week, and shops close on the holidays.
How do Austrian school holidays and public holidays affect a Vienna trip?
Link to this answerThey shape crowds and opening hours. Vienna’s 2026–27 school holidays fall in late October, over Christmas, in early February, at Easter, at Whitsun and from 3 July to 5 September 2027. On public holidays and Sundays most shops close, though most city-centre restaurants open daily.
Dates in the table come from the Bildungsdirektion Wien and WienTourismus. Neighbouring Lower Austria shares Vienna’s semester holiday dates, which concentrates domestic demand in that week.
Shops are the main casualty of a holiday. WienTourismus says Sunday and holiday shopping is limited to large railway stations, the airport and museum shops, while most city-centre restaurants open daily and some museums close one day a week, often Monday or Tuesday.
Transport runs on holidays too. Under-15s travel free on Wiener Linien on Sundays, public holidays and during Vienna school holidays, according to WienTourismus, and the U-Bahn runs all night every 15 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays, per its operating-hours page.
| Period | Dates | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| National Day | Mon 26 Oct 2026 | Public holiday; shops closed |
| Autumn school holidays | 27–31 Oct 2026 | Busier museums; All Saints’ Day on 1 Nov |
| Immaculate Conception | Tue 8 Dec 2026 | Public holiday, but stores open |
| Christmas school holidays | 24 Dec 2026–6 Jan 2027 | Rathausplatz market closes 26 Dec; Epiphany on 6 Jan |
| Semester holidays | 30 Jan–6 Feb 2027 | Families at museums and the ice rink |
| Easter holidays | 20–29 Mar 2027 | Easter Monday 29 Mar is a public holiday |
| May holidays | 1, 6, 17 and 27 May 2027 | Labour Day, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi |
| Summer school holidays | 3 Jul–5 Sep 2027 | Free Wiener Linien travel for under-15s; Film Festival on Rathausplatz |
What weather risks should you plan for in Vienna?
Link to this answerHeat and summer thunderstorms are the main risks, with icy pavements and grey skies in winter. The inner city holds heat at night, so a room with air-conditioning matters from June to August. In winter, short days limit sightseeing light: December averages under two hours of sunshine a day.
Thunderstorm days in our GeoSphere averages rise from 4.0 in May to 5.8 in June and 6.3 in July, and WienTourismus links the higher summer rainfall to those storms. Plan outdoor concerts and Danube Island days with a backup.
The FCDO’s Austria safety advice does not cover heat, so use the climate data. In our GeoSphere averages, the Innere Stadt station has 10.6 days of 30°C or more in July, against 8.4 at Hohe Warte, and nights stay warmer. Ask hotels about air-conditioning before booking a July or August stay.
Winter brings a different set of problems: 18.2 ice days a year at Hohe Warte, when the temperature never rises above freezing, and December sunshine of just 56 hours in the month. Choose museums and coffee houses for afternoons, and keep outdoor sightseeing for the brightest hours around midday.
What changes in 2026–27 should Vienna visitors know about?
Link to this answerTwo. From 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, the central S-Bahn line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed, so the CAT runs as a 21-minute bus to Wien Mitte. And Vienna’s tourist tax rises from 5% to 8% of the net room rate on 1 July 2027.
WienTourismus says trains will not stop at Rennweg or Wien Mitte during the closure. The City Airport Train runs premium coaches every 12 minutes between 7am and 7pm, otherwise every 15 minutes, from Wien Mitte (Marxergasse 1b). Railjet and Intercity trains reach Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes twice an hour, the REX 7 takes about 20 minutes, and the S7 terminates at St. Marx.
The Vienna Chamber of Commerce says the local tax is 5% of the assessment base now and 8% from 1 July 2027. Its worked example for a €130 night including breakfast gives €4.91 of tax at 5% and €7.65 at 8%. On a long stay, travelling before July 2027 saves a little.

When should budget travellers, families and culture lovers visit Vienna?
Link to this answerBudget travellers should look at January, outside the semester holidays, and March. Families should weigh summer festivals against heat. Culture lovers should aim for September to June, when the State Opera and concert halls are in season. Weather-sensitive travellers do best from late April to early June and in September.
Our budget suggestion is based on the calendar, not price data: 7 to 29 January 2027 falls between the Christmas and semester holidays in the Bildungsdirektion calendar, and the weeks between Eistraum closing on 7 March and the Easter holidays from 20 March are similarly quiet on the calendar. Expect cold weather and fewer events in exchange.
For culture, the State Opera’s season runs from September into June, and the Vienna Philharmonic’s year-end concerts need a lottery entry each February. Short on time? The Vienna in one day plan and 3-day itinerary work in any season; the Vienna Pass guide helps if you plan many museums.
