How should you spend 7 days in Vienna?
Link to this answerSpend five days in the city at an unhurried pace, one district or theme a day, and two on day trips: the Wachau valley with Melk Abbey, and Bratislava. Book Schönbrunn, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Belvedere by time slot, and plan around the central S-Bahn closure, which runs until the end of October 2027.
A week lets you trade a checklist for neighbourhoods. Where our Vienna 3-day itinerary compresses the Ring, Schönbrunn and the museums, this plan gives each its own day, adds a wine-tavern evening and leaves the city twice. A 7-day VIENNA ticket for public transport costs €28.90 on paper or €25.20 digitally and runs for seven consecutive days from validation, WienTourismus says.

What should you book ahead, and what changes in 2026–27?
Link to this answerBook time slots for Schönbrunn, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which has admitted visitors only by reserved slot since 8 September 2026, and the Belvedere, where slots are free. Note two changes: the central S-Bahn closure until the end of October 2027, and the Sisi Museum’s renovation, with closures of some areas until it reopens fully on 19 November 2026.
From 7 September 2026 to the end of October 2027, trains do not run on the inner-city S-Bahn between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof and do not stop at Wien Mitte or Rennweg, WienTourismus says. The City Airport Train runs as a 21-minute bus to Wien Mitte instead, the S7 ends at St. Marx, and Railjet and Intercity trains reach the Hauptbahnhof from the airport in about 15 minutes, twice an hour.
Vienna’s accommodation tax also rises from 5% to 8% of the net room rate on 1 July 2027, the Vienna Chamber of Commerce says, so a week in spring 2027 costs slightly less in tax than the same week that summer. Children under 15 ride Wiener Linien free on Sundays, public holidays and during Vienna school holidays, per WienTourismus.

What should you do on days 1 and 2 in the Innere Stadt and Hofburg?
Link to this answerGive day 1 to St Stephen’s Cathedral and the Albertina, and day 2 to the Hofburg: the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments, the Spanish Riding School’s visitor centre and a 40-minute State Opera tour. Splitting them leaves time for coffee houses and lets you see the cathedral during its tourist visiting hours.
St Stephen’s welcomes tourists Monday to Saturday from 9am to 11:30am and 1pm to 4:30pm, and on Sundays and holidays from 1pm to 4:30pm, subject to liturgical changes; the church itself opens from 6am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 7am on Sundays and holidays. Its rules exclude sleeveless tops and short skirts. Then walk to the Albertina at the southern end of the Hofburg, open daily 10am–6pm and until 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, where €19.90 buys Dürer’s Hare, Monet’s Water Lily Pond and the Habsburg state rooms.
On day 2, the Sisi Museum, entered under the Michaelerkuppel, opens daily 9am–5:30pm with last entry at 4:30pm; the €20 ticket also covers the Imperial Apartments, and renovation brings some changes and closures until the grand reopening on 19 November 2026. The Spanish Riding School’s visitor centre at Michaelerplatz 1 opens daily 9am–4pm, with performance and morning-training dates on the school’s own site.
Finish with a State Opera tour: tours last 40 minutes and run in German and English at every listed time; only spare places are sold at the box office, so book online. To see a performance, check the 2026–27 season, which runs from September into June.
How do you spend day 3 at Schönbrunn and the Naschmarkt?
Link to this answerTake the U4 to Schönbrunn for an early palace time slot, then walk the free park up to the Gloriette. After lunch, ride the U4 back towards Karlsplatz for the Naschmarkt’s stalls and the reopened Wien Museum. Arrive at the palace soon after 8:30am, because last admission is 45 minutes before closing.
Schönbrunn Palace opens daily, including holidays: 8:30am–5:30pm until 2 November 2026 and 8:30am–5pm from 3 November to 31 March 2027, with longer hours on some Advent dates. The Palace Ticket, about 75 minutes with an audio guide, costs €42, and the shorter State Apartments route €30; the palace strongly recommends booking online and warns that fake ticket sites exist. Reach it on the U4 to Schönbrunn, trams 10 and 60 or bus 10A, per its directions.
The park is free and opens at 6:30am, closing at 7pm in October and 5:30pm in November and December; the fountains do not run from mid-October to mid-April. The Privy Garden, Orangery Garden, maze and Gloriette terrace need separate tickets.
In the afternoon, the Naschmarkt has around 130 stalls and a Saturday flea market, and nearby Karlsplatz has the reopened Wien Museum, WienTourismus notes.
How do you plan the Wachau and Melk day trip on day 4?
Link to this answerTake the train to Melk, tour the abbey in the morning, then board a DDSG boat downstream through the Wachau to Krems and return by train. The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket, from €77, bundles the rail journey, the boat and abbey entry. Boats ran from 28 March to 1 November in 2026, so in winter visit Melk by train only.
Melk Abbey opened 9am–5:30pm from April to October 2026 and opens 10am–4:30pm from 2 November 2026 to 6 January 2027; from 7 January to 19 March 2027, weekday visits are guided only, at 11am, 1:30pm and 3pm. Admission is €16, plus €4 for a guided tour, with English tours at 10:55am and 2:55pm from April to October. The abbey says the walk from Melk station takes 10 to 15 minutes.
The DDSG Wachau line runs between Melk and Krems via Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein. In the 2026 main season, from 25 April to 4 October, boats left Melk at 11am, 1:50pm, 2:35pm and 4:25pm, reaching Krems in under two hours; the 1:50pm sailing also ran in the shorter spring and autumn seasons. DDSG warns that low water can cancel scheduled cruises. The ÖBB Wachau-Ticket includes second-class rail from Vienna and back, the boat in either direction and abbey entry.
To hop between wine villages instead, the VOR Wachauticket costs €13 for a day on selected buses and the Danube ferries at Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen and Spitz. Compare options in best day trips from Vienna.
What should you see on day 5 in the museum quarter?
Link to this answerSpend the morning at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which opens daily from 10am and until 9pm on Thursdays, using a reserved time slot. After lunch, cross to the MuseumsQuartier’s courtyards and galleries, and spend the evening in Spittelberg’s lanes. If you travel on a Thursday, flip the order and see the paintings in the evening.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum charges €22 online or €24 on site, and visitors under 19 enter free. Since 8 September 2026, admission is only during reserved time slots, so book before you go; it closes early, at 3pm, on 24 December 2026.
Across the Ring, WienTourismus describes the MuseumsQuartier as one of the world’s leading cultural complexes and a popular outdoor space, with Spittelberg’s bars and craft shops a few streets away; the where to stay in Vienna guide covers both as bases. If you plan many paid museums this week, check whether a pass pays off in is the Vienna Pass worth it.
How do you make day 6 a Bratislava day trip?
Link to this answerIn season, take the Twin City Liner catamaran from the Vienna City pier at Schwedenplatz, which reaches Bratislava in 75 minutes and sails up to three times a day each way. Outside the boat season, go by train and check ÖBB’s journey planner for departures. Either way, carry a valid travel document, as WienTourismus advises.
WienTourismus places the Twin City Liner pier on the Danube Canal at Schwedenplatz, between the Marienbrücke and the Schwedenbrücke, and says a valid travel document is required. It does not list the season or fares, so check the operator’s timetable before you plan the day around the boat.
All ÖBB long-distance trains stop at Wien Hauptbahnhof, which WienTourismus says can be reached from any U-Bahn or S-Bahn station in under 30 minutes; for Bratislava, check ÖBB’s planner for the current service and departure station, because timetables change. Keep the day loose: the old town is compact, and a slow lunch matters more than a long list.
How do you spend day 7 at the Belvedere, the Prater and a Heuriger?
Link to this answerSee Klimt’s The Kiss at the Upper Belvedere in the morning, ride the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater in the afternoon, and end at a Heuriger, a wine tavern on the city’s edge. If you fly home today, keep the Belvedere and take a Railjet from the Hauptbahnhof to the airport.
The Upper Belvedere opens daily 9am–6pm and holds 24 paintings by Gustav Klimt, including The Kiss; the Lower Belvedere opens 10am–6pm, and time-slot tickets are free to book. The Giant Ferris Wheel, built in 1897 and almost 65 metres tall, turns daily from 9am to 11:45pm all year; a standard ticket costs €14.50. Nearby, the Karmelitermarkt runs a farmers’ market on Fridays and Saturdays, WienTourismus says.
A genuine Heuriger serves only wine from its own vineyards, and Heuriger culture is on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Look for a pine bush and an “Ausg’steckt” sign, which show a tavern is open; the classic areas include Grinzing, Nussdorf, Neustift and Stammersdorf, and smaller taverns open only on set dates, so check before you go.
For the airport, Railjet and Intercity trains run from the Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, twice an hour, WienTourismus says; our Vienna to Budapest guide covers onward rail.
How should you adapt the week to weather and season?
Link to this answerVienna’s hottest weeks are July and August, with about eight days a month of 30°C at Hohe Warte, so put Schönbrunn’s gardens and the Wachau early in the day. In winter, the Wachau boats stop, Christmas markets take over from 13 November 2026, and December averages under two hours of sunshine a day.
Climate figures are TravelShifu averages of GeoSphere Austria’s station data for Wien Hohe Warte, 1991–2020: 8.4 hot days in July and 7.6 in August, and 56 hours of sunshine in December. The best time to visit Vienna has the full table, and Vienna in the rain more indoor ideas.
Autumn and winter add events: the Viennale film festival runs from 22 October to 3 November 2026, and the Christmas market on Rathausplatz from 13 November to 26 December 2026. Schönbrunn’s fountains stop from mid-October to mid-April, and Melk switches to guided-only weekday visits from 7 January 2027.
| Day | Hot summer day | Rainy day | November to March |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Cathedral early; Albertina in the afternoon | Keep; mostly indoors | Keep; check holiday hours |
| 3 | Schönbrunn at 8:30am; park before noon | Palace rooms; skip the Gloriette | Palace closes at 5pm; fountains off |
| 4 | Morning abbey, afternoon boat | Abbey; check the boat is sailing | Melk by train; boats not running |
| 5 | Museums in the heat of the day | Keep; indoors | Keep |
| 6 | Early boat or train | Train; a shorter walking loop | Train only if the boat is off |
| 7 | Belvedere at opening | Upper and Lower Belvedere | Christmas markets until 26 Dec |
Which tours are worth booking, and what else should you know?
Link to this answerA guided tour earns its cost on the Wachau day if you want wine stops without timetables, and for the Hofburg or Schönbrunn if you want commentary. Bratislava is easy to do yourself by boat or train. Book refundable options, and validate public transport tickets: the FCDO warns of on-the-spot fines of €100 to €500.
Compare what each listing includes, such as transport, abbey entry, tastings and time on site, and the cancellation terms; our GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook comparison explains the platforms. The FCDO says crime in Austria is generally low but pickpocketing is higher in big city centres, main stations and city parks after dark.
For the city overview, see the Vienna destination guide and Vienna hotels; getting around Vienna covers tickets in more depth.
- Is a week too long for Vienna? No; five city days plus two trips keeps the pace slow.
- Do I need a car? No; trains, boats and the U-Bahn cover every day.
- Can I add Budapest? Yes, as an overnight trip; see Vienna to Budapest by train or plane.
- What if the Wachau boats are not running? Visit Melk by train, or swap in a museum day.
- Where should I stay? See where to stay in Vienna.
