A Maldives 7-day itinerary: two nights on a guesthouse island near Malé, three at an Ari or Baa resort for whale sharks or mantas, then a Malé stop.

Key takeaways

What is the best 7-day itinerary for the Maldives?

Spend one night in Hulhumalé, two on a local guesthouse island near Malé and three at a resort in Ari or Baa, then fly home on Day 7. The local island gives you sandbanks and Maldivian life; the resort gives you whale sharks in South Ari or, in the southwest monsoon, mantas in Baa.

A week is long enough to see both sides of the Maldives without spending it in transit. This plan starts on an inhabited island, where Visit Maldives says the guesthouse industry is centred on the greater Malé region, and finishes at a resort further out, reached by seaplane or domestic flight.

It is the opposite of the Maldives 3-day itinerary, which stays at one speedboat resort near Malé. Here you change islands twice, so choose bases with where to stay in the Maldives and pick the month with the best time to visit the Maldives: the marine-life day depends on the season.

Everything that moves you between islands is booked in advance: the guesthouse transfer, the resort’s seaplane or flight, and the marine-life trip. The rest of the week stays loose.

What does the week look like at a glance?

Day 1 is arrival, Days 2 and 3 are on a local island, Day 4 is the flight or seaplane to Ari or Baa, Days 5 and 6 are resort and marine-life days, and Day 7 brings you back to Malé. Two transfer days are the price of seeing both worlds.

Put the first night in Hulhumalé or Malé if you land in the afternoon or evening; Trans Maldivian Airways suggests exactly that for late arrivals. If you land in the morning, go straight to the guesthouse island and add a night at the resort instead.

The resort leg on Day 4 must fit seaplane hours if your resort uses them, sunrise to sunset only, so leave the guesthouse island early enough to connect.

How is this week different from the 3-day plan?

Link to this answer

The 3-day plan uses one speedboat resort near Malé and one excursion. This week adds two nights on an inhabited island, moves to a resort in Ari or Baa for a marine-life day timed to the season, and leaves time for Malé on the way home. It accepts two extra transfer days.

On three days, every hour of transfer is a big share of the holiday, so the 3-day plan stays close to the airport. A week can absorb a seaplane or domestic flight, which opens up the atolls with the strongest wildlife seasons: South Ari’s year-round whale sharks, according to Visit Maldives, and Baa’s monsoon mantas.

The local-island nights are the other difference. They cost less in green tax, US$6 per night at guesthouses of 50 rooms or fewer against US$12 at resorts, Raajje.mv reported, and show you everyday Maldivian life, from tea shops serving hedhikaa to football on the beach, as Visit Maldives describes it.

How should you spend Days 2 and 3 on a local island?

Link to this answer

Transfer by speedboat or ferry on the morning of Day 2, walk the island, eat a Maldivian lunch and swim where local dress rules allow. On Day 3, take a sandbank and snorkel trip, then a sunset cruise. Dress modestly, expect no alcohol and check whether Ramadan falls in your week.

Visit Maldives’ local-life ideas include sandbank trips, sunset cruises alongside dolphins, bicycle rides, a few Dhivehi phrases and a breakfast of mashuni (grated coconut, tuna, onion, chilli and lemon) with roshi. Most islands with guesthouses have water-sports and diving centres, according to its guesthouse guide.

The FCDO says that outside resorts, including on beaches used by local people, visitors should cover their shoulders, avoid short or tight shorts and cover arms and upper legs when bathing, and that possessing or drinking alcohol outside resorts can lead to arrest and deportation. During Ramadan, which may begin on 7 February 2027, do not eat, drink or smoke in public by day.

Scheduled ferries run from Malé to most atolls, per Visit Maldives. Ask your guesthouse which transfer it uses, when the last boat leaves and what happens if the weather cancels it, and check that life jackets are provided, as the FCDO advises.

How do you handle the Day 4 transfer to Ari or Baa?

Leave the local island in the morning, connect at Velana and fly on by seaplane or domestic flight. Trans Maldivian Airways flies only between sunrise and sunset, allows 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand luggage, and charges US$5 a kilo above that. Baa is about 20 minutes by air to Dharavandhoo.

Trans Maldivian Airways says resort transfers are booked through its partner resorts, that oversized items such as surfboards need a charter, and that it does not carry smart bags with non-removable batteries. Pack for the smallest aircraft in your journey, not the biggest.

For Baa, Visit Maldives says several daily flights link Velana with Dharavandhoo Airport in about 20 minutes. For South Ari, ask your resort whether it uses a seaplane or a domestic flight and boat, and how long each leg takes.

Keep the morning simple: settle the guesthouse bill, confirm the boat time the night before and allow a buffer at Velana. If the morning boat is delayed, tell the resort at once, because seaplanes cannot fly after sunset.

What should the Day 5 marine-life trip be?

Match it to the atoll and month. In South Ari, whale sharks are seen year-round in the marine protected area. In Baa, Hanifaru Bay’s mantas gather in the southwest monsoon, with whale sharks from May or June to October or November. Divers near Malé can add Manta Point from May to October.

The table uses Visit Maldives’ pages on South Ari, Baa, Gnaviyani and North Malé diving, plus its Baa Atoll reserve page. Wildlife does not keep to a timetable, so treat these as the best odds rather than guarantees, and book a trip with a cancellation or reschedule option.

The FCDO reports fatal propeller accidents in the South Ari Marine Protected Area and at nearby whale shark sites, and says propeller-guard rules are not yet fully enforced. Choose an operator that gives a proper briefing and keeps groups small, and stay well clear of boat traffic in the water.

What should Day 6 at the resort look like?

Link to this answer

Keep it slow. Snorkel the house reef after a briefing, book a morning dive only if you are certified and have time before flying, and leave the afternoon for the spa, a nap or a sunset drink, since alcohol is available on resort islands. Pack the night before.

The FCDO warns that strong tidal currents can drag swimmers from the shoreline, advises swimming only in supervised or designated areas, and says many resort islands are more than an hour from the nearest of three hyperbaric chambers. Ask the dive centre how it would reach one before you book a dive.

Because Day 7 involves a seaplane or flight back to Velana, dive on Day 5 or early on Day 6 at the latest, and follow the dive centre’s guidance on flying after diving. The 3-day itinerary shows a compact version of this resort rhythm.

If you prefer culture to another reef day, ask whether the resort runs trips to a nearby inhabited island; Visit Maldives’ culture page describes the dhoni boats, lacquered woodwork and woven reed mats the country is known for.

How do you use Day 7 and a stop in Malé?

Transfer back to Velana in the morning. If your flight leaves in the evening, take a taxi into Malé for the coral-stone Hukuru Miskiy, built in 1658, and the presidential residence of Muleeaage, completed in 1919, then return in daylight. Keep a generous buffer before check-in.

Visit Maldives says Hukuru Miskiy and its 1675 minaret are the oldest built structures in Malé, made of interlocking carved coral blocks, beside a 17th-century graveyard where rounded tombstones mark women’s graves and pointed ones men’s. Muleeaage was built between 1914 and 1919 and has served as the presidential palace for long periods since.

The FCDO asks visitors to be respectful around mosques and during Ramadan, and says gang-related crime occurs mainly in Malé and Hulhumalé, so avoid empty streets on foot after dark. Airports scan transit and checked luggage for drugs, including cannabis.

If your seaplane leaves the resort in the morning, Trans Maldivian Airways says it looks after guests whose international flights depart after 9am, but a Malé stop only makes sense with an evening flight.

Can you swap the resort leg for the far south?

Link to this answer

Yes, if you dive or want quieter atolls. Fly to Fuvahmulah for whale sharks, seen year-round with the best odds in December and April, or to Addu for wetlands, cycling and mangrove canoeing in the southernmost atoll. Both use domestic flights from Velana and need a buffer night before flying home.

Visit Maldives says Fuvahmulah’s whale sharks are mostly large females averaging 8 metres. The FCDO’s warning about distance from hyperbaric chambers matters even more this far from Malé, so check your dive centre’s emergency plan.

Addu has five inhabited islands and a 16 km link road from Hithadhoo to Gan, and a nature park covering the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and the protected Koattey area, with guided tours, cycling routes and canoeing among red mangroves, the tourism board says. Domestic flights link Velana with the country’s 12 domestic and international airports.

Swap Days 4 to 6 for the southern leg and keep Days 1 to 3 as they are. If your international flight leaves early on Day 7, fly back on Day 6 and spend the last night in Hulhumalé.

Is a week the right length for the Maldives?

Link to this answer

For most first visits, yes. A week covers a local island, a resort further out and a marine-life day timed to the season, with time to rest. Plan the transfers first, book one excursion per island, and check Ramadan and the monsoon before you lock in dates.

The WMO averages for Malé show February as the driest month, at 38.1 mm, and November as the wettest, at 231.1 mm, while the southwest monsoon, which the Maldives Meteorological Service puts at mid-May to November, is also manta and whale shark season in Baa.
