Where should you stay in the Maldives?

For a short first trip, stay at a resort near Malé that uses speedboat transfers. For a week, consider two nights on a local guesthouse island and the rest at a resort further out in Ari or Baa. Use Malé or Hulhumalé only for a night between flights, and the far south for whale sharks and wetlands.

The Maldives is 1,192 islands in 26 atolls stretching 871 km, and only 200 are inhabited, according to Visit Maldives. Resorts follow a one-island-one-resort model, while guesthouses sit on inhabited islands among local people, as the tourism board’s guide to guesthouse culture explains. Choosing a base is mostly choosing between those two worlds, then deciding how far from the airport to go.

Distance decides the transfer. Visit Maldives says resorts around the airport are reached by speedboat and those further afield by seaplane, with daily flights to 12 domestic and international airports and scheduled ferries from Malé to most atolls (connectivity). Trans Maldivian Airways, the seaplane operator, flies only between sunrise and sunset.

Once you have a base, time the trip with the best time to visit the Maldives, compare villa costs in best overwater villas in the Maldives and plan the days with the Maldives 3-day itinerary or the 7-day itinerary. Our Maldives hotels page and destination guide have more.

How do the Maldives’ main bases compare?

Link to this answer

Eight bases cover most trips. Malé and Hulhumalé are transit stops; resorts in the Malé atolls are a speedboat ride away; guesthouse islands near Malé are the budget option; Ari is for whale sharks; Baa is a biosphere reserve with mantas; and Fuvahmulah and Addu, far south, need a domestic flight.

The table compares the bases by transfer, island life and rules rather than by price, because no official source publishes typical rates. Price feel is relative: a small local-island guesthouse charges a lower green tax and serves no alcohol, while resorts add the higher tax, transfers and meal plans to the room rate.

Two rules apply everywhere. Maldives Immigration requires a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and a return ticket, and the FCDO says alcohol is available only on resort islands and must not be taken out of them.

Should you choose a resort or a local guesthouse island?

Link to this answer

Choose a resort for privacy, alcohol, a pool and transfers handled for you. Choose a guesthouse island for lower costs and local life, accepting Islamic dress and alcohol rules. On a week-long trip you can combine both: two or three local-island nights, then a resort further out.

Visit Maldives says the guesthouse industry boomed after rules that confined tourism to resorts on uninhabited islands were relaxed, with the greater Malé region as the main hub, and that guesthouse guests can still book excursions, water sports, snorkelling and diving (guesthouse culture). Its local-life ideas include sandbank trips, sunset dolphin cruises, bicycle rides and a breakfast of mashuni and roshi.

The rules differ sharply. The FCDO says that outside resorts, including on beaches used by local people, men and women should cover their shoulders, avoid short or tight shorts and cover arms and upper legs when bathing; that alcohol is only available on resort islands; and that nudism and topless sunbathing are banned everywhere, resorts included. Ramadan may start on 7 February 2027, it adds.

Taxes differ too. Since 1 January 2025, resorts, resort hotels, guesthouses with more than 50 rooms and vessels charge a green tax of US$12 per guest per night, and guesthouses on inhabited islands with 50 rooms or fewer charge US$6, Raajje.mv reported. The tourism goods and services tax rose from 16% to 17% on 1 July 2025, MMTV reported. Visit Maldives’ travel information page still showed the older rates when we checked.

Is Malé or Hulhumalé worth a night?

Link to this answer

Worth one night when your flight lands too late for a seaplane or leaves early in the morning. Trans Maldivian Airways suggests a night in Malé or Hulhumalé for arrivals after 15:30. Neither is a beach-holiday base, and the FCDO reports gang-related crime in both, so avoid empty streets after dark.

Trans Maldivian Airways asks guests to land by 15:30 to reach a resort the same day and, if no flight arrives in time, suggests a night in Malé or Hulhumalé to see local life. You can take a taxi from the airport to Malé, according to Visit Maldives, which also says the main public hospital, IGMH, and the private ADK and Treetop hospitals are in Malé.

Malé is the capital and home to about a third of Maldivians, per Visit Maldives. With a spare morning, see Hukuru Miskiy, built in 1658 of carved coral, whose 1675 minaret and mosque the tourism board calls the oldest built structures in Malé, and Muleeaage, the presidential residence, built between 1914 and 1919.

The FCDO says gang-related violence, including knife crime, occurs mainly in Malé and Hulhumalé, and advises avoiding empty roads on foot, particularly after dark. Political protests occasionally take place in Malé. Choose a hotel on a busy street, arrange your airport transfer in advance and keep the stay short.

Why choose a resort in the Malé atolls?

Link to this answer

They are the easiest resorts to reach: Visit Maldives says resorts around the airport use speedboats, so neither travel day depends on seaplane hours. The atoll also has the country’s most established dive sites, a May-to-October manta season at Manta Point and the most accessible surf breaks, which suits short stays.

Visit Maldives says Malé Atoll was the first to establish tourism and has some of the country’s most popular dive sites, including the Maldives Victory wreck at about 35 metres and Manta Point in the south-east of North Malé Atoll, where mantas feed during the southwest monsoon from May to October.

Surfers have the shortest transfer. The tourism board’s surfing guide says North Malé Atoll is the most popular and accessible surf area because of its many resorts and its closeness to the international airport, names breaks such as Cokes at Thulusdhoo and Lhohis at Lhohifushi, and gives a season from mid-February to November, best from March to May and from September to the end of November.

A speedboat resort suits a short stay because it frees the arrival and departure days from the seaplane’s sunrise-to-sunset window. Ask the resort how long the boat takes, what it costs per person and whether life jackets are provided, which the FCDO asks travellers to check. The Maldives 3-day itinerary assumes this kind of base.

What is it like to stay on a local guesthouse island?

Link to this answer

You stay among Maldivian families on an inhabited island, eat local food, join boat trips to sandbanks and reefs, and swim where local dress rules apply. There is no alcohol, Ramadan changes daytime life, and the green tax is US$6 a night at guesthouses of 50 rooms or fewer instead of US$12.

The tourism board’s guesthouse guide says styles range from budget to boutique and bed-and-breakfast inns, that most islands with guesthouses have water-sports and diving centres, and that women are expected to dress more modestly on inhabited islands than in resorts. Its local-life list suggests football on the beach, tea and hedhikaa (short eats) and learning a few Dhivehi phrases.

Islands near Malé are the easiest to reach, because the greater Malé region is the guesthouse hub and scheduled ferries run from Malé to most atolls, per Visit Maldives. Surfers can weigh up islands near North Malé’s breaks; the surfing guide names Cokes at Thulusdhoo among the best known.

The FCDO says you can be arrested and deported for possessing or drinking alcohol outside resorts, and that in daytime during Ramadan you should not eat, drink or smoke in public outside resorts. Check that your guesthouse is registered, because Maldives Immigration requires a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility, and ask what happens if bad weather cancels a ferry.

Should you stay in Ari or Baa Atoll?

Link to this answer

Choose Ari for whale sharks: Visit Maldives says they are seen year-round in the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Choose Baa for manta rays: Hanifaru Bay has seen up to a hundred in one gathering during the southwest monsoon, and whale sharks arrive from May or June. Both mean a seaplane or domestic flight.

The South Ari Marine Protected Area has the highest whale shark re-sighting rate of any hotspot in the world, according to Visit Maldives, because the same individuals return. The FCDO reports fatal accidents involving boat propellers in the protected area and at nearby whale shark sites, and says propeller-guard rules are not yet fully enforced, so choose operators carefully.

Baa Atoll’s biosphere reserve covers over 139,000 hectares, with nine core areas where extraction is banned and boats may not anchor except in emergencies, according to Visit Maldives. Hanifaru Bay, on its eastern side, draws mantas as the tide pushes plankton in, and whale sharks gather from May or June to October or November. Several daily flights take about 20 minutes from Velana to Dharavandhoo.

Both atolls are further from Malé, so the transfer shapes your first and last days. If your resort uses seaplanes, land by 15:30, per Trans Maldivian Airways, and remember its 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand-luggage allowance. The Maldives 7-day itinerary builds a week around an Ari or Baa resort.

Are Fuvahmulah and Addu worth the extra flight?

Link to this answer

For divers and repeat visitors, yes. Fuvahmulah’s whale sharks are seen year-round, mostly large females averaging 8 metres, with the best odds in December and April. Addu, the southernmost atoll, has five inhabited islands, a 16 km link road, wetlands and mangroves. Both need a domestic flight from Velana.

Visit Maldives gives Fuvahmulah, in Gnaviyani Atoll, a year-round whale shark season with the highest probability in December and April, and says most of the animals seen are large females averaging 8 metres. The FCDO warns that many resort islands are more than an hour from the nearest of the country’s three hyperbaric chambers, so ask any dive centre how it would reach one.

Addu is the southernmost atoll, with five inhabited islands forming six districts and a 16 km link road from Hithadhoo to Gan. Its nature park covers the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and the protected Koattey area on Hithadhoo, with guided nature tours, cycling routes and canoeing among red mangroves where baby stingrays and sharks live, the tourism board says.

Getting there means one of the domestic flights that Visit Maldives says link Velana with the country’s 12 domestic and international airports. Allow a buffer night near Velana before your international departure.

How do transfers and arrival rules affect where you stay?

Link to this answer

Book the transfer with the stay: seaplanes fly only from sunrise to sunset and need you on the ground by 15:30, speedboats serve resorts near the airport, and domestic flights reach the outer atolls. Before you fly, submit the free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours of arrival and carry your accommodation confirmation.

Trans Maldivian Airways says resort transfers are reserved through its more than 80 partner resorts, that it looks after departing guests whose international flights leave after 9am, and that it charges US$5 a kilo plus taxes over the 25 kg allowance, with no bag over 32 kg. Surfboards and other oversized equipment need a charter flight.

Maldives Immigration requires a passport valid for at least a month, confirmed return tickets, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered facility and enough funds, and every traveller must submit the free IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours before arrival. The FCDO says British tourists get a 30-day visa on arrival and that bringing in alcohol or pork is illegal.

If your flight lands late, book the first night in Hulhumalé or Malé and the resort from the next day; if it leaves early, do the reverse. Our Maldives 3-day itinerary shows how to fit a short stay around these windows.

What safety checks apply wherever you stay in the Maldives?

Link to this answer

Ask where it is safe to swim, because the FCDO warns that strong tidal currents cause drownings; check life jackets on every boat; and know how your dive centre would reach one of the three hyperbaric chambers. Medical care is limited outside Malé and Hulhumalé, so carry insurance that covers evacuation.

The FCDO advises swimming only in supervised or designated areas and asking resort staff about conditions, and says terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out while crime levels are low on resort islands. Its health page says the only fully equipped hospitals are in Malé and Hulhumalé.

Drug laws are severe: the FCDO says even small quantities of cannabis can lead to arrest and that airports scan the luggage of transit passengers. It is also illegal to take tortoiseshell or coral out of the country.
