How should you spend 3 days in Punta Cana?

Keep day 1 for the beach in front of your hotel and an early night, give day 2 to a Saona Island catamaran trip, and spend day 3 in Cap Cana at the Hoyo Azul cenote, then on Macao or Juanillo beach. Book Saona with a clear weather-cancellation policy and keep departure day light.

Punta Cana is not a city you walk around. The Dominican tourism ministry describes it as the country’s best-known resort area, with more than 50km of white-sand beaches along the eastern tip of the island, from Macao and Bávaro to Cabeza de Toro, Bibijagua, Los Corales and Juanillo (Go Dominican Republic). Three days work best when the coast is your base and you leave it for one or two outings only.

This plan is a desk-researched suggestion, not a route we have travelled. Opening times come from the venues, safety guidance from the UK Foreign Office and rainfall from the 1991–2020 climate normals for the Punta Cana weather station, all checked on 16 October 2026. Excursion pickup times vary by hotel, so treat clock times as a sketch.

Choose your base first with where to stay in Punta Cana: a hotel at Uvero Alto, at the northern end of the coast, adds road time to every trip south to Cap Cana or the Saona departure points. What does the 3-day Punta Cana plan look like at a glance?

Day 1 stays on your own beach after the airport transfer. Day 2 is a full-day catamaran to Saona Island, usually with an early hotel pickup. Day 3 is Cap Cana: Scape Park’s Hoyo Azul cenote at opening, then a wilder beach such as Macao or Juanillo. No day has more than one fixed booking.

The table lists what anchors each day, what to book and the weather swap. Saona trips depend on the sea, so put day 2 in the middle of your stay: if the operator cancels, you still have another day to move it to.

Scape Park, which contains Hoyo Azul, opens every day from 9am to 5pm, with attractions closing at 4:30pm (Scape Park). That makes day 3 the easiest day to swap, because it does not depend on a boat or a fixed sailing time.

What do you need to sort out before you land in Punta Cana?

Complete the Dominican Republic’s free E-Ticket entry and exit form before you check in for your flight, carry proof of an onward or return ticket, and arrange an authorised airport transfer or taxi. British visitors can stay 30 days without a visa, and the US$20 departure tax is already included in your airfare.

The UK Foreign Office says arrivals must fill in an entry and exit form, which can be completed up to seven days before arrival and produces a QR code to show at check-in or on arrival; you may also be refused entry without proof of onward or return travel (FCDO entry requirements). The tourism ministry adds that the form is free and that the US$20 departure tax is included in your airline ticket (Go Dominican Republic).

Passport rules need a careful read. The FCDO says a British passport need only remain valid for the length of your visit, a rule it lists as applying until 31 December 2026, with possible changes after that date. The tourism ministry’s general guidance asks for six months’ validity, so if your passport is close to expiry, renew it before you book rather than rely on the shorter rule.

For the airport run, the FCDO advises using an authorised airport or hotel taxi service, or booking from a registered provider, and warns that motorbike taxis are often driven badly and may not provide a helmet (FCDO safety). The tourism ministry notes that the airport is a short drive from most resorts, with transfers, taxis and car hire available (Go Dominican Republic).

Day 1: how should you spend your first day on the Punta Cana coast?

Keep day 1 within walking distance of your hotel. After the transfer, swim only where your hotel or the beach signals it is safe, walk the sand in the softer late-afternoon light and eat early. Most long-haul arrivals are tired, and day 2 begins with an early excursion pickup from the hotel lobby.

Beaches on this coast are long, open and mostly backed by hotels, so the simplest first afternoon is a walk from your own property. The FCDO notes that lifeguards may not be present at pools or on beaches, that the sea can be dangerous, especially in the hurricane season, and that you should follow instructions about sea conditions and warning systems (FCDO). Check the flag or ask at the beach desk before you swim.

If you stay around Bávaro or Los Corales, an evening stroll to a beachfront restaurant outside your hotel is an easy way to see more of the coast. Keep bags off chairs and tables and do not leave drinks unattended, two habits the FCDO highlights for bars and restaurants in the Dominican Republic.

Use this evening to confirm tomorrow’s pickup. Excursion companies collect from hotel lobbies across a wide stretch of coast, so check the time and meeting point on your voucher or in the booking app, and be in the lobby early.

Day 2: is a Saona Island catamaran trip worth a full day?

Yes, if you want one classic Caribbean boat day and do not mind a long coach ride first. Saona is known for its natural pools, and trips sail from the south coast towards La Romana and Bayahibe. Choose an operator with clear safety information and a weather-cancellation policy, and expect to be out most of the day.

The tourism ministry promotes catamaran excursions to Isla Saona, “famous for its natural pools”, and lists Saona and Catalina trips, along with snorkelling and diving in Cotubanamá National Park, among the highlights of the La Romana area, which it places 45 minutes from Punta Cana (Go Dominican Republic: Punta Cana, La Romana). From hotels further north the road journey is longer, which is why Saona fills a whole day.

The FCDO warns that recreational and adventure tourism providers may not meet UK safety standards and asks travellers to check safety standards with operators and make sure their insurance covers the activity (FCDO). Before paying, look for the boat type, life-jacket policy, group size, what lunch and drinks are included and what happens if the sea is too rough to sail.

If you get seasick or travel with very young children, a shorter boat trip or a second beach day may suit you better. Catalina Island, which the tourism ministry also lists for catamaran trips from the La Romana side, is an alternative; compare the time on the water and on the road rather than the island’s name.

Day 3: how do you combine Hoyo Azul, Cap Cana and Macao?

Arrive at Scape Park in Cap Cana for its 9am opening and walk to Hoyo Azul while the morning is cooler. Spend the afternoon on a beach with a different character: Juanillo, close to Cap Cana, or Macao, which the tourism ministry recommends for surfing and a more natural setting. Finish with dinner at Cap Cana’s marina.

Hoyo Azul is a turquoise cenote inside Scape Park, roughly 14m deep at the foot of a 75m limestone cliff; you cross a suspension bridge and walk past an orchid garden to reach it, then jump in or use the steps (Go Dominican Republic). The park also offers zip lines, horse riding, buggy tours and the more demanding Iguabonita cave expedition, which climbs El Farallón, a cliff about 100m high (Go Dominican Republic).

Scape Park opens daily from 9am to 5pm, with attractions closing at 4:30pm, and warns that some attractions run limited schedules (Scape Park). Packages differ in what they include, so check that yours covers Hoyo Azul before you pay. A morning visit suits the heat and leaves the afternoon free.

For the afternoon, the tourism ministry suggests Playa Macao for “a more natural setting and surfing” (Go Dominican Republic). Juanillo, on the Cap Cana side, is the closer choice. Cap Cana’s marina, built for yachts and sport-fishing boats within a resort community of hotels and beach clubs, is a pleasant place to end the day (Go Dominican Republic).

How should weather and the hurricane season change this plan?

Rain falls in every month in Punta Cana, but March is the driest, with about 50mm on average, and September the wettest, with about 135mm. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November and peaks in early September, so trips from August to October need flexible bookings and good insurance.

The 1991–2020 WMO climate normals for the Punta Cana station (78479), submitted by the Dominican Republic and archived by NOAA, give 1,158.6mm of rain a year, with a secondary peak of 129.3mm in May (WMO normals).

The US National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaks on 10 September and is most active between mid-August and mid-October (NHC). The FCDO adds that the sea can be dangerous in this period and recommends following local news and official weather reports (FCDO).

Can you add Altos de Chavón or La Romana to a 3-day trip?

Only with care. Altos de Chavón sits inside the Casa de Campo resort, which says access is limited to hotel guests, residents and their guests, apart from concert-goers with tickets and pre-arranged educational visits. If you are not staying there, choose an excursion that explicitly includes entry, or give the day to the coast instead.

The tourism ministry describes Altos de Chavón as a replica 16th-century Mediterranean-style village and suggests it as a cultural excursion (Go Dominican Republic). Casa de Campo lists a 5,000-seat amphitheatre opened with a Frank Sinatra concert in 1982, a church consecrated in 1979 and a Regional Archaeological Museum open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm (Casa de Campo).

The same page says the village is typically open from 9am to 6pm but that access is limited to hotel guests, residents and their guests. Concert-goers without a stay show their ticket at the property entrance, and educational group visits run Monday to Friday with at least 48 hours’ notice. Older itineraries that treat the village as a casual drop-in may not work.

If culture matters more than beaches on day 3, a day trip to Santo Domingo’s colonial centre is the other option, but it is a long drive for a three-day stay. The Punta Cana 7-day itinerary has room for it.

Which tours fit a 3-day Punta Cana trip, and how do you choose one?

Book one boat excursion and, at most, one land activity. For Saona, compare the pickup zone, boat type, time on the water and the weather-cancellation policy. For Scape Park, check that the package includes Hoyo Azul. Avoid stacking two excursions on one day, because transfers along this long coast quickly eat into your time.

Marketplaces list Saona catamarans, Scape Park packages, buggy and horse-riding tours, and airport transfers. Who should change this 3-day plan?

Families with young children may prefer a calm hotel beach and Scape Park to a long Saona day. Surfers should give more time to Macao. Nature lovers can swap the beach afternoon for the freshwater lagoons of the Indigenous Eyes reserve. Anyone visiting from August to October should keep at least one day unbooked.

The tourism ministry highlights walks through the freshwater lagoons of the Reserva Ecológica Ojos Indígenas as one of the area’s natural attractions (Go Dominican Republic).
