How should you spend 7 days in Punta Cana?

Alternate beach days with three long outings. Settle in on days 1 and 2, see Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone on day 3, rest on day 4, then snorkel at Catalina from Bayahibe on day 5. Drive north to Miches on day 6 and finish at Hoyo Azul in Cap Cana, ten minutes from the airport.

A week in Punta Cana works best as a rhythm rather than a checklist. The Punta Cana 3-day itinerary gives you one beach day, a Saona catamaran and Hoyo Azul; this plan keeps the beach at its heart but adds the country’s capital, a different island and the quieter north-east coast, with a rest day between each long trip.

It is a desk-researched suggestion, not a route we have travelled. Sights and distances come from the Dominican tourism ministry, bus details from the operator, safety guidance from the UK Foreign Office and rainfall from the WMO’s 1991–2020 normals, checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. Several Dominican government and attraction sites blocked our checks, so some hours carry a “confirm locally”.

Your resort zone decides how long each outing takes: Cap Cana is closest to the airport and the southern coast, while Uvero Alto adds road time to everything. Choose with where to stay in Punta Cana, and check the season in best time to visit Punta Cana.

What does the 7-day Punta Cana plan look like at a glance?

Days 1, 2, 4 and 7 stay close to your hotel; days 3, 5 and 6 are full-day outings to Santo Domingo, Bayahibe and Miches. No two long trips fall on consecutive days, which leaves room to move a boat trip if the sea is rough. The table lists bookings and a bad-weather swap for each day.

Put the sea-dependent day, Catalina, in the middle of the week so a cancellation can move to day 4. The Santo Domingo day depends on traffic rather than weather, and Miches works in light rain if you skip the viewpoint.

Before booking any excursion, read the FCDO’s warning that recreational and adventure tourism providers may not meet UK safety standards, and check that your insurance covers boat trips and water sports (FCDO).

Days 1 and 2: how should you settle in on the coast?

Complete the free E-Ticket entry form before you fly, take an authorised transfer and spend the first evening on your own beach. On day 2, do nothing more ambitious than a long beach walk: from Bávaro you can reach the beachfront restaurants and craft stalls of Los Corales and Bibijagua on foot.

The FCDO says arrivals must complete an entry and exit form, which can be filled in up to seven days before arrival and produces a QR code, and that you may be refused entry without proof of onward travel (FCDO entry requirements). The tourism ministry adds that the form is free and the US$20 departure tax is included in your airfare (Go Dominican Republic).

The tourism ministry describes more than 50km of beaches on the eastern tip of the island, from Macao and Bávaro to Cabeza de Toro, Bibijagua, Los Corales and Juanillo, and highlights Bibijagua and Los Corales for local crafts and beachfront ambience (Go Dominican Republic). Swim only where flags or staff say it is safe: the FCDO notes that lifeguards may not be present (FCDO).

For the airport run, the FCDO advises an authorised airport or hotel taxi or a registered provider, and notes that ride-hailing apps are widely available; it warns that motorbike taxis are often badly driven (FCDO). Use day 2 to book the week’s outings once you know your hotel’s pickup times.

Day 3: how do you see Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone from Punta Cana?

Leave early by private tour or the Expreso Bávaro bus; the tourism ministry puts the capital about two and a half hours away by road. Walk Calle Las Damas, visit the cathedral and the newly reopened Alcázar de Colón, and see Fortaleza Ozama. Return before dark, or stay overnight to avoid driving at night.

Go Dominican Republic calls the Colonial Zone a UNESCO World Heritage Site and points to Calle Las Damas, the first paved street in the Americas, the Primada de América Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in the Americas, and Fortaleza Ozama, the oldest European military structure in the New World (Go Dominican Republic). The Alcázar de Colón, the viceregal palace museum, reopened on 29 September 2026 after three years of works (Diario Libre, 28 September 2026).

Expreso Bávaro charges RD$400 one way, sells only single tickets, cannot be booked in advance or online, and asks passengers to be at the station an hour before departure; its Bávaro stops are at Cruce de Friusa and Cruce de Verón, and it arrives near Parque Enriquillo or the Joaquín Balaguer Metro station in Santo Domingo (Expreso Bávaro). The operator gives a journey of about three hours (Expreso Bávaro).

The FCDO says the crime rate is high and that foreigners have been mugged at gunpoint or knifepoint in daytime in residential districts, and warns that driving outside the main cities at night can be dangerous (FCDO). Keep valuables out of sight, stay in busy streets, and plan the return so you are back on the highway in daylight; an overnight stay in the capital is the relaxed alternative.

Day 4: why build in a rest day, and what can you do nearby?

Because a long road day to the capital and an early boat trip back to back are tiring, and because a free day lets you move a sea-dependent trip. Spend it on your beach or by the pool, or walk the freshwater lagoons of the Ojos Indígenas reserve, checking its hours locally first.

The tourism ministry lists walks through the freshwater lagoons of the Reserva Ecológica Ojos Indígenas among Punta Cana’s natural attractions (Go Dominican Republic). We could not confirm current opening hours or fees from an official source, so ask your hotel before you go.

If day 5’s boat trip is cancelled for rough seas, this is where it moves. Keep an eye on sea conditions with your operator the evening before; the FCDO warns that the sea can be dangerous, especially in the hurricane season (FCDO).

Day 5: how do you combine Bayahibe, Catalina and the Cueva de las Maravillas?

Head south-west to Bayahibe, the gateway to Cotubanamá National Park, and take a boat to Isla Catalina, which the tourism ministry rates for snorkelling and diving. On the way back, stop at the Cueva de las Maravillas, a lit cave with hundreds of Taíno pictographs between La Romana and San Pedro.

Go Dominican Republic puts Bayahibe 20 minutes from La Romana and describes it as the main gateway to Cotubanamá National Park, with trails, caves and cenotes; it calls Catalina ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving, and Saona famous for its beaches and natural pools (Go Dominican Republic). Cotubanamá, also known as Parque Nacional del Este, includes Saona, whose beaches are the country’s most important turtle-nesting site (Go Dominican Republic).

If you have already done the Saona catamaran from the 3-day plan, Catalina gives this day a different character: more time in the water, less on deck. Choose an operator that publishes its boat type, life-jacket policy and weather-cancellation terms.

The Cueva de las Maravillas lies between San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana and has hundreds of well-preserved Taíno pictographs and petroglyphs, with lighting, ramps, a footpath and a lift. We could not confirm its hours or fee from an official page, so call ahead. Nearby Altos de Chavón limits access to Casa de Campo guests, residents and their guests, apart from ticketed concerts (Casa de Campo).

Day 6: is Miches or Los Haitises worth the drive north?

Yes, for travellers who want green hills and lagoons rather than more resort beach. Miches is about 1.5 hours north by road, with the Montaña Redonda viewpoint, Laguna Redonda and Playa Esmeralda. From January to March it is the base for humpback whale trips, and Los Haitises National Park is accessible from the town.

The tourism ministry describes Montaña Redonda’s panoramic swings and 360-degree views over the coast, including Laguna Limón, and lists Laguna Redonda and Playa Esmeralda among Miches’ sights (Go Dominican Republic). Humpback whales gather in the Bancos de la Plata sanctuary and La Navidad from January to March, with excursions from Miches (Go Dominican Republic).

Los Haitises National Park covers about 1,600 square kilometres, and its caves hold the country’s largest concentration of petroglyphs and pictographs; the tourism ministry suggests exploring by boat from Samaná or by kayak through the mangroves (Go Dominican Republic). It is a long day from Punta Cana, so a guided tour that handles the boat is the practical choice.

Low cloud can hide the Montaña Redonda view, so check the forecast and keep the lagoons and beach as a fallback. The tourism ministry says the ProMiches initiative, launched in 2025, promotes monitoring and responsible tourism in the sanctuary (Go Dominican Republic), so choose a whale-watching operator that follows observation protocols.

Day 7: how do you spend your last morning before the flight?

Arrive at Scape Park in Cap Cana for its 9am opening and swim in the Hoyo Azul cenote, then spend an hour on Juanillo beach before heading to the airport. Cap Cana says it is ten minutes from Punta Cana International, so this works even with an early-afternoon flight.

Hoyo Azul is a turquoise cenote about 14m deep at the foot of a 75m limestone cliff, reached by a suspension bridge and a path past an orchid garden (Go Dominican Republic). Scape Park opens daily from 9am to 5pm, with attractions closing at 4:30pm; check that your package includes Hoyo Azul.

Cap Cana describes itself as ten minutes from Punta Cana International Airport, which makes it the most practical last-morning outing from any zone. Leave wet swimwear time to dry, or pack a waterproof bag, and keep your passport and E-Ticket QR code to hand for departure.

If you did Hoyo Azul on the 3-day plan, swap in Macao, which the tourism ministry recommends for a more natural setting and surfing (Go Dominican Republic), or simply a last swim at your hotel.

How should rain, storms and sargassum shape a Punta Cana week?

Rain falls in every month, from about 50mm in March to 135mm in September in the WMO’s 1991–2020 averages. The hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and sargassum usually peaks in June or July. From May to November, keep outings flexible and choose a resort with good pools.

The WMO 1991–2020 normals for the Punta Cana station give 1,158.6mm of rain a year, with March the driest month at 50.4mm and September the wettest at 135.3mm, plus a secondary peak of 129.3mm in May (WMO normals). The National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic season peaks on 10 September, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October (NHC).

The University of South Florida expected Caribbean sargassum to keep declining until about November, and warns its outlooks cannot predict a particular beach (USF, September 2026). Hotels clear their own beaches with machinery and staff, while public stretches often struggle to keep pace (Dominican Today, 9 July 2026).

For this plan, rain matters most on days 5 and 6. Move Catalina to day 4 if the sea is rough, and do Miches on a clearer day. Santo Domingo’s cathedral and museums offer cover on a wet day 3.

Which tours fit a week in Punta Cana, and who should change the plan?

Book three at most: a Santo Domingo day tour if you would rather not take the bus, a Catalina or Bayahibe snorkelling trip, and a Miches or Los Haitises excursion. Families with young children can swap Santo Domingo for a beach day; divers can add a second Bayahibe day; winter visitors should add whales.
