Ten days from Bali to Labuan Bajo: three Bali nights, a Komodo boat trip under the 2026 park quota, Wae Rebo or Kelimutu options, sea seasons and etiquette.
Key takeaways
- Yes, if you fly rather than sail from Bali to Labuan Bajo, book the Komodo boat around the park’s daily quota (at least 500 a day until December 2026), and keep one…
- Base yourself in one area for all three nights and keep the third evening for packing, because the day 4 flight to Labuan Bajo is the hinge of the trip.
- Fly from Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ); it is the practical choice on a 10-day trip.
- Keep day 4 light. Check in, confirm tomorrow’s pickup time, departure pier and park booking with your boat operator, and watch the sunset from town.
- Choose a speedboat day trip if you are short of time; choose a one- or two-night boat if you want slower days with fewer long runs between sites.
Does a 10-day Bali to Komodo itinerary work?
Link to this answerYes, if you fly rather than sail from Bali to Labuan Bajo, book the Komodo boat around the park’s daily quota (at least 500 a day until December 2026), and keep one weather buffer day. Three Bali nights, a sea day or short liveaboard and one Flores excursion fit; Wae Rebo fits far better than Kelimutu.
This is a desk-researched suggested route checked on 16 October 2026, not a trip we have taken. Flores is recovering from a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on 15 August 2026: Komodo National Park reopened within days, while inland sites including Wae Rebo and Kelimutu closed; Kelimutu has since reopened with restrictions and Wae Rebo was reported to be reopening provisionally. Check each site’s status shortly before you travel.
The table assumes three nights in Bali, six in or around Labuan Bajo and a flight out on day 10. If you are still choosing between this and a Java route, use the Indonesia route planner; for the town itself, read the Labuan Bajo guide.
| Day | Base (night) | Main plan | Transport | Travel time |

| 3 | Bali | Full day; pack for the morning flight | Driver or tour | Keep drives short |
| 4 | Labuan Bajo | Fly; sunset in town | DPS–LBJ flight | Short domestic flight; check the schedule |
| 5 | Labuan Bajo or boat | Komodo day trip or start a liveaboard | Speedboat or phinisi | 2–4 h to park sites by boat (indonesia.travel) |
| 6 | Labuan Bajo or boat | Second sea day, or rest | Boat or none | Weather-dependent |
| 7 | Wae Rebo | Drive to Denge, trek up, welcome ceremony | Private car and trek | 5–6 h drive plus about 7 km uphill (indonesia.travel) |
| 8 | Labuan Bajo | Trek down and drive back | Trek and car | As day 7, in reverse |
| 9 | Labuan Bajo | Weather buffer | None planned | None |
| 10 | Depart | Fly out | LBJ flight | Check the schedule |
How should you spend the first three days in Bali?
Link to this answerBase yourself in one area for all three nights and keep the third evening for packing, because the day 4 flight to Labuan Bajo is the hinge of the trip. Choose a base with a manageable airport transfer, pay the Bali tourist levy and do not book a sunrise excursion for departure morning.
The UK FCDO says foreign tourists arriving in Bali pay a levy of 150,000 rupiah, online or on arrival, and that a visa on arrival requires proof of onward travel. Our visa-on-arrival guide covers entry. The FCDO also notes that Bali’s airport closes for Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence; check its date in your travel year.
Use where to stay in Bali to choose the base and getting around Bali before agreeing a driver quote. The 3-day Bali itinerary fits this first block, the best time to visit Bali covers weather, and the Bali guide covers the wider island.

How do you get from Bali to Labuan Bajo?
Link to this answerFly from Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport (DPS) to Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ); it is the practical choice on a 10-day trip. Book a morning flight on day 4, check the operating carrier and baggage allowance, and keep any boat trip off the same day in case of delays.
The tourism ministry names Komodo International Airport and the port as Labuan Bajo’s gateways, with flights from cities including Denpasar. Several Indonesian carriers have flown the route, but we could not confirm the current operators on airline or airport websites, so we do not name them here. Search by airport codes and check who operates the flight you buy.
Weather and volcanic ash can disrupt Flores flights; the FCDO notes that ash clouds can affect regional airports. After the August 2026 earthquake, BPOLBF said Komodo Airport stayed operational while some routes into Ende had cancellations. Choose a fare you can change, and check the checked-baggage allowance before adding dive or snorkel gear.

What should you do on arrival day in Labuan Bajo?
Link to this answerKeep day 4 light. Check in, confirm tomorrow’s pickup time, departure pier and park booking with your boat operator, and watch the sunset from town. Use the afternoon to withdraw cash and to tell the operator about swimming ability, seasickness and any dietary or medical needs.
Komodo National Park now requires advance registration through the SIORA online reservation system, and the park fee does not cover the boat, accommodation or operator services. Ask your operator to confirm in writing whether it books the SiOra permit for you and whether the trip price includes the park fee.
Hotels outside the harbour area may need a ride to the pier, so agree the pickup point and departure jetty with the operator rather than assuming the marina. After the earthquake, BPOLBF, the government authority for Labuan Bajo Flores tourism, published a WhatsApp line (0811-3879-4555) for destination conditions, RRI reported. Use it to check inland sites before you book days 7 and 8.

Should you choose a Komodo day trip or a liveaboard?
Link to this answerChoose a speedboat day trip if you are short of time; choose a one- or two-night boat if you want slower days with fewer long runs between sites. Either way, check the vessel’s sailing permit, life jackets, named sites, return time and what happens if the harbour authority restricts sailings.
The tourism ministry says park sites are 2–4 hours from Labuan Bajo by boat, depending on destination, vessel and weather. On rough days the harbour authority (KSOP) has issued sailing permits for Rinca only: in August 2026 detik reported trips to Komodo and Padar were stopped for forecast winds of up to 24 knots and waves of up to 2.4 metres.
Safety deserves real scrutiny. A tourist boat sank off Padar Island on 26 December 2025, and in July 2026 the navy stopped an open-deck boat that lacked a sailing permit. Ask for the boat’s name, its permit, crew numbers, children’s life jackets and radio equipment. The FCDO advises against sailing after dark unless the vessel is suitably equipped.
Marketplaces list both formats. Compare named operators, refund terms for weather cancellations and whether SiOra and park fees are included. Our Komodo National Park guide goes deeper on sites and fees.

What are the Komodo National Park rules in 2026?
Link to this answerBook entry in advance through SiOra, because the park caps daily visits (at least 500 a day until December 2026, after the year’s quota ran out). Walk with a ranger on Komodo and Rinca, never approach or feed the dragons, leave no rubbish and do not touch coral. The foreign visitor park fee is listed at Rp250,000.
The park’s spokesperson told Antara on 14 April 2026 that the 1,000-visitor daily limit had applied since 1 April. Floresa reported that the SiOra system did not always block extra bookings during the trial, and that some tourists without advance bookings were refused entry at Padar. Do not count on buying entry on arrival. After the year’s quota ran out in August, a 22 September 2026 park notice set a daily allocation of at least 500 people for September to December, CNN Indonesia reported.
The tourism ministry’s park page lists fees under Government Regulation 36 of 2024: Rp250,000 for foreign tourists and Rp50,000–75,000 for Indonesians, excluding boats and operators. It says rangers guide the trails and keep both visitors and dragons safe, and asks visitors not to approach, feed, chase or provoke wildlife. Follow the ranger’s instructions on distance and route at all times.
The quota and SiOra rules are new and may change. Check the current position with your operator and with Balai Taman Nasional Komodo, the park authority, and see our Komodo National Park guide for site-by-site detail.
When are sea conditions best for a Komodo boat trip?
Link to this answerApril–June and September–November are generally the best months, according to Indonesia’s tourism ministry, but no month is closure-proof. In 2026 the harbour authority restricted tourist sailings in January, February, July and August. Leave at least one spare day between your boat trip and your flight out.
The tourism ministry recommends April–June and September–November and warns that the rainy season can affect seas and boat schedules. The FCDO says Indonesia’s rainy season usually runs from October to March, varies in the east, and that sea conditions can change rapidly.
The 2026 record shows why a buffer matters. CNN Indonesia reported a run of sailing bans from 29 December 2025 into February 2026; detik reported another for 23–25 February; and in August, detik noted sailings had been repeatedly closed and reopened through July.
Busy months also mean quota pressure: Floresa reported that park visits peak in July and are lowest in January. Book SiOra-linked trips early for July and August, and check that your travel insurance covers boat trips and snorkelling.
Can you add Wae Rebo or Kelimutu on a 10-day trip?
Link to this answerAdd Wae Rebo, not Kelimutu, if you have only ten days. Wae Rebo is a two-day trip from Labuan Bajo: a five- to six-hour drive to Denge, an uphill trek of about 7 km and a night in the village. Kelimutu is in Ende Regency, far to the east, and needs different routing.
The official tourism site gives the five- to six-hour drive from Labuan Bajo to Denge and a trek of about 7 km, two to three hours depending on fitness; trips can also start from Ruteng. detik reported in April 2025 that the village bars treks starting after 16:00 WITA, so leave Labuan Bajo early.
Wae Rebo’s managers closed the village on 15 August 2026 because of landslide risk on the trail. Later reports said a provisional reopening began on 1 September, but we could not confirm this from an official source, so check with the village or your operator before booking.
At Kelimutu, the Geological Agency found a crack about 100 metres long near the rim of Crater I and told visitors to stay 6–10 metres from it, Metro TV reported on 24 August 2026. A ground operator, Khiri Travel, said on 27 August that the park had reopened from 07:00 to 12:00 with no sunrise visits. If Kelimutu is your priority, plan a route that ends in central or eastern Flores rather than returning to Labuan Bajo.

How should you behave when visiting Wae Rebo?
Link to this answerTreat Wae Rebo as a living village, not a viewpoint. Start the trek before the 16:00 WITA cut-off, join the welcome ceremony at the main house before exploring, dress modestly, follow the elders and your guide, carry cash because there are no ATMs, and take your rubbish back down.
Visitors are first taken to the main house, Niang Gendang, for the Waelu’u welcome ceremony, CNBC Indonesia reported. The village’s cultural preservation body told detik that ceremonies are held only until 18:00 WITA and that dinner is prepared for guests who arrive before then.
The tourism ministry asks visitors to dress modestly, follow local customs and guidance from elders or guides, keep the village and trail clean, and bring rain gear, a warm layer and enough cash. Our own advice: ask before photographing people or rituals, keep noise down in the shared mbaru niang houses at night, and ask your operator which village fees the price includes.
The same principles apply at other desa wisata, or tourism villages, across Flores. After the earthquake, RRI reported that tourist sites in Ngada and Nagekeo were restricted because of power and telecommunications outages; check that any village you add is open and expecting visitors.
Where should you stay in Bali and Labuan Bajo?
Link to this answerStay in one Bali base for three nights, then in Labuan Bajo for the rest, apart from any nights on a boat or in Wae Rebo. In Labuan Bajo, choose a hotel with an easy transfer to your operator’s pier, keep the booking flexible around weather days and ask about luggage storage.
In Bali, where to stay in Bali compares bases; a shorter airport transfer helps before a morning flight. In Labuan Bajo, ask whether the hotel will store your main bag while you are on a liveaboard or in Wae Rebo, so you can travel with a small pack. The Labuan Bajo guide explains how the town and the boat trip are planned separately.
After the August 2026 earthquake, at least one Labuan Bajo hotel was reported closed for repairs, so confirm your property is operating. Compare the same room, breakfast, taxes and cancellation date across sites. These links open provider searches, not properties we have inspected.
