- Leave a buffer before any flight in case the return sailing is delayed.
How do you plan a trip to Nusa Penida from Bali?
Link to this answerTake a fast boat from Sanur, which the tourism ministry puts at 30 to 45 minutes depending on the weather, then hire a car with driver for the steep roads. With one day, choose the west or east coast. Budget for the Bali levy and Klungkung’s attraction charges, and treat cliffs and wave-washed rocks with real caution.
Nusa Penida is the largest of three islands south-east of mainland Bali, with Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, all in Klungkung Regency in Bali province. The tourism ministry’s Nusa Penida page lists Kelingking, Crystal Bay, Diamond and Atuh beaches, Teletubbies Hill, Manta Point and the Goa Giri Putri cave temple, and recommends visiting in the April to October dry season.
The island rewards planning more than most Bali day trips. Roads are steep and slow, the famous viewpoints are far apart, and the sea decides whether boats run on time. Start with our Bali guide for where to stay on the mainland and our fast-boat journey guide for the questions to ask any boat operator.
How do fast boats from Sanur to Nusa Penida work, and what should you check?
Link to this answerSeveral operators sail from Sanur through the day, and boats also leave from Kusamba and Padang Bai. Check the operator, which Sanur pier and which Nusa Penida harbour, the check-in time, luggage, life jackets and weather terms. Book ahead in holiday periods, and never rely on a same-day connection to an international flight.
The tourism ministry gives the crossing as 30 to 45 minutes and names Toyapakeh and Sampalan among the arrival points, so ask which harbour your boat uses: your driver needs to meet you there. Most Sanur sailings use the main harbour. Denpasar planned a second pier at Mertasari to ease traffic in Sanur, but its trial was postponed in February 2026 while it waited for a harbourmaster permit (Kompas, 18 February 2026). If a ticket names Mertasari, confirm the meeting point the day before.
The UK Foreign Office warns that sea conditions can change rapidly, vessels can be crowded and overloaded, and life jackets for children are not always available. Look at the boat before boarding, check there are life jackets, and avoid sailing after dark unless you are satisfied the vessel is equipped for it. BMKG’s maritime forecast shows wave conditions, but the operator and harbour authorities decide whether a sailing goes.
Pack valuables and phones in a dry bag, since boarding and landing can involve wet steps, and keep the operator’s contact number to hand for the return trip.
| Before you pay | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Operator name and vessel | Resellers sell several operators under one listing |
| Departure pier in Sanur | The main harbour and any Mertasari services are different meeting points |
| Arrival harbour on Nusa Penida | Your driver must meet the right harbour |
| Check-in time and return time | Sets how much of the day you actually get on the island |
| Life jackets, including child sizes | The Foreign Office says these are not always available |
| Weather cancellation and refund terms | Sailings can be delayed or cancelled in rough seas |

Should you ride a scooter or hire a driver on Nusa Penida?
Link to this answerHire a car with driver unless you are an experienced rider with the right licence and insurance. The tourism ministry warns that the roads are hilly and partly rocky. The UK Foreign Office says you cannot ride on a UK licence alone, should wear a good helmet, and reports a large rise in moped accidents in Bali.
The Foreign Office’s driving advice says UK visitors need a UK-issued International Driving Permit to drive, should check their travel insurance covers driving or riding, and should wear a helmet in good condition. It also warns that foreign nationals in even minor traffic incidents may be vulnerable to extortion, and suggests considering a private driver.
A driver also solves navigation and parking at the viewpoints. Agree the route, the number of stops, the finish time and whether attraction charges and parking are included before you set off. Ask for a vehicle with working seat belts, and say so if the driving on the hills feels rushed.
Which Nusa Penida spots should you visit, and how are they grouped?
Link to this answerThe west holds Kelingking, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay; the east has Diamond Beach and Atuh. With one day, pick one coast rather than racing both. Kelingking is the headline view, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong sit side by side, and Crystal Bay suits snorkelling and sunset.
Kelingking, in Bunga Mekar village on the south-west coast, is the headland shaped like a T. rex head; the tourism ministry points to the Cap de T-Rex viewpoint for the classic shot and calls the descent to the beach steep and dangerous. Broken Beach (Pasih Uug), which the ministry describes as a cove with a natural archway and turquoise pool, is about 3 km from Kelingking, and Angel’s Billabong is the rock pool beside it. Crystal Bay, on the west coast, is known for clear water and is popular with snorkellers and divers.
Diamond Beach and Atuh are on the east coast, a long drive from the western sights. Teletubbies Hill and the Goa Giri Putri cave temple make sense on a second day. Leave time at each stop rather than squeezing in one more viewpoint.
| Spot | Coast | What it is | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kelingking | South-west | T. rex-shaped headland above a beach | Steep, dangerous path; strong currents on the beach |
| Broken Beach (Pasih Uug) | West | Cove with a natural arch and turquoise pool | Stay well back from the cliff edges |
| Angel’s Billabong | West, beside Broken Beach | Tidal rock pool | Big waves can sweep people off the rocks |
| Crystal Bay | West | Beach with clear water; snorkelling and sunset | Ask about currents before swimming |
| Diamond Beach and Atuh | East | Beaches below the cliffs | A long drive from the west coast |
How dangerous are Nusa Penida’s cliffs and swimming spots?
Link to this answerSerious enough to plan around. In September 2026 an Australian visitor died after falling at Kelingking while looking for her own route to the cliff edge, and visitors have drowned or been swept off rocks at Kelingking and Angel’s Billabong. Stay on marked paths, keep back from edges and do not swim in surf.
The Kelingking death on 12 September 2026 happened when the visitor slipped while trying to find her own path towards the cliff edge; rescuers had to carry her up the steep, narrow stairway because high waves ruled out evacuation by sea (RRI, 13 September 2026). In October 2025 a French visitor drowned after strong currents caught her while swimming at Kelingking Beach, and authorities urged extreme caution when swimming or taking photographs near the shoreline (NusaBali, 16 October 2025).
At Angel’s Billabong, a visitor from India died in October 2024 after a large wave swept him off the rocks while he was taking photographs at the edge (Kompas, 18 October 2024). Ask your driver or local staff about the tide and swell before going down, and stay off the outer rocks when waves are breaking.
Help is slow to reach the bottom of a cliff. Wear shoes with grip, go down only if you are confident on steep, uneven steps, and keep children close. Do not expect a lift at Kelingking: Bali’s governor ordered work on a cliffside glass lift stopped and the structures dismantled in November 2025 (Antara, 23 November 2025), and the project remained in dispute in 2026.
Do you pay a tourist levy to visit Nusa Penida?
Link to this answerForeign visitors pay Bali’s IDR 150,000 provincial levy once for Bali, which includes Nusa Penida. Klungkung Regency also charges its own tourism levy: from 1 September 2026, reports say foreign adults pay Rp25,000 and children aged 4 to 13 pay Rp15,000, collected for the island area and at each participating attraction.
The provincial levy is paid through the official Love Bali site, which showed IDR 150,000 when we checked in October 2026; the UK Foreign Office says you can pay online or on arrival. Nusa Penida is part of Bali province, so this is not a separate island charge. Keep the QR voucher on your phone.
Klungkung’s charge is different. Its Regulation 4 of 2026 sets Rp25,000 per foreign adult and Rp15,000 per child aged 4 to 13 for the Nusa Penida area, and the same for Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan (Kompas, 12 August 2026). From 1 September 2026, under a scheme called One Gate One Destination, attractions in the scheme also charge per visit at the same rates, and detikBali reported that the per-attraction charge applies to domestic as well as foreign visitors (detikBali, 11 August 2026).
The scheme was weeks old when we checked, and the published reports do not list every attraction in it. Before you set off, ask your driver or tour whether attraction charges are included, how many attractions you will enter and how you pay. A separate marine-area fee for snorkellers and divers was introduced in 2023 under a provincial regulation (detikBali, 2023); ask your boat operator whether it applies and is included.
| Charge | Who pays | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bali tourist levy (provincial) | Foreign tourists | IDR 150,000 (Love Bali, checked October 2026) | Pay online or on arrival; covers Bali province |
| Klungkung tourism levy, Nusa Penida area | Foreign adults; children aged 4–13 | Rp25,000; Rp15,000 (reported August 2026) | Regulation 4 of 2026 |
| Attraction charge (One Gate One Destination) | Visitors to participating attractions | Same rates per visit, as reported | From 1 September 2026; ask if your tour includes it |
| Marine-area fee | Snorkellers and divers | Ask your operator | Provincial charge introduced in 2023 |
Is Nusa Penida better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
Link to this answerA day trip works if you accept one coast, an early boat and a fixed return time. Stay at least one night to see both coasts, snorkel without rushing, catch softer morning or evening light and avoid gambling on the last boat back. If you fly home the next day, return to Bali a day early.
On a day trip, the boat and the roads eat into your time: allow for check-in at Sanur, the crossing and the drive to the first viewpoint, then the same in reverse. That usually means the western sights only. Two days let you split west and east and add a manta snorkel without a race back to the harbour.
Weather is the hidden cost. Sailings can be delayed or cancelled when the sea is rough, so never connect an island day directly to an international flight; our fast-boat guide explains why a buffer night is worth it.

Where should you stay on Nusa Penida?
Link to this answerStay near your arrival harbour on the north coast for easy boat connections, or closer to the west or east coast if you want early starts at the viewpoints. Choose by road time rather than distance on the map, because the hills make short trips slow. Check harbour pickup and cancellation terms.
A night on the island lets you reach Kelingking or Diamond Beach before the day-trippers arrive from Bali, and it takes the pressure off the last boat back. Ask the property whether it meets your boat, whether it can arrange a driver, and how far it is from the coast you plan to explore first.
Keep at least one flexible night on the Bali side at the end of your trip, in case rough seas delay your return crossing.

How do you snorkel with manta rays at Nusa Penida responsibly?
Link to this answerChoose an operator that briefs you before you get in, keeps groups small and puts a guide in the water. Keep at least 3 metres from the mantas, approach from the side, and never touch, chase or block them. Mantas are fully protected in Indonesia, and sea conditions decide whether a trip goes ahead.
Indonesia gave both manta species full legal protection in 2014, banning their capture and trade (Mongabay, February 2014). The research charity Manta Trust recommends staying at least three metres away, staying passive and approaching from the side within the animal’s field of vision; its research found mantas avoided swimmers far more often when approached more closely (Manta Trust).
Manta sites can be exposed to swell and current. Ask whether the operator supplies life jackets or buoyancy aids, how many snorkellers each guide leads, and whether it will change site or cancel in rough water. If you are not a confident swimmer, say so before you board.
Do not feed or touch wildlife, stand on coral or kick up sediment, and keep splashing to a minimum near the animals.

Check group size, whether a guide swims with you, life jackets and the boat’s safety kit, whether the marine-area fee is included, the start time and hotel pickup, and the weather-cancellation policy. Avoid any trip that offers touching or feeding wildlife.
