Where should you stay in Bali?
Link to this answerOn a first trip, split your nights between Ubud for temples and rice terraces and one beach base: Sanur for calm water and families, Seminyak for restaurants and sunsets, or Uluwatu for surf and cliffs. Choose Nusa Dua for big resorts, Jimbaran for a quick airport run and Kuta for budget rooms.
Bali is an island, not a city, and the right base depends on what you plan to do each day. There is no rail network: getting around means cars with drivers, taxis, ride-hailing apps or the six Trans Metro Dewata bus corridors, which ANTARA lists as linking Denpasar’s Ubung terminal and Kuta with the airport, Sanur, Nusa Dua and Ubud. Pick the area first, then the hotel.
The tourism ministry’s own area guides show how different the bases are: Sanur’s lagoons are protected by offshore reefs, Canggu is a black-sand surf beach backed by rice paddies, and Nusa Dua is a purpose-built enclave of international hotels. Ubud, in the island’s centre, has no beach at all but sits among rice terraces, according to its ministry page.
Use this page to pick the area, then plan the days with the Bali 3-day itinerary or the Bali 7-day itinerary, and check the season with the best time to visit Bali. The Bali destination guide has the wider picture, and our Denpasar hotels page includes a beachfront stay in Sanur.
How do Bali’s main areas compare?
Link to this answerEight bases cover most trips. Ubud is the cultural centre; Seminyak and Canggu are the lively west-coast pair; Kuta and Legian are cheap and loud; Sanur is calm and walkable; Nusa Dua is all resorts; Jimbaran is close to the airport; and Uluwatu suits surfers and clifftop sunsets.
The transport column uses the six Trans Metro Dewata corridors that ANTARA listed in August 2026, at a standard fare of Rp4,400, plus drive times from the tourism ministry’s area pages. IDN Times reported in April 2026 that the buses run from about 04:30 or 05:00 until roughly 18:20–18:40, so evenings mean a taxi, an app ride or a hotel car.
Price feel is relative rather than a quote, and no area is uniformly cheap or expensive: Seminyak has budget hostels as well as high-end resorts, and Uluwatu ranges from simple warung rooms to villas. Compare the final total, including tax and any airport transfer, before you pay.
| Area | Best for | Getting around | Walkability | Noise and nightlife | Price feel | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ubud | Culture, rice terraces, wellness | TMD Corridor 4 to Monkey Forest central parking; drivers for day trips | Good in the centre | Quiet to moderate | Budget to high | No beach; about 45 minutes to Sanur by road |
| Seminyak | Restaurants, shopping, sunsets | Walk or taxi; no TMD corridor ends here | Good, especially in the evening | Lively evenings | Mid to high | Traffic can get very congested (tourism ministry) |
| Canggu | Surf, cafés, villas | Car or hotel pickup advised; 45 minutes from the airport | Limited; the ministry advises a car | Moderate to lively | Mid | Black-sand surf beach |
| Kuta and Legian | Budget stays, surf lessons, a first night | TMD Corridors 1, 5 and 6 start at Kuta central parking | Good | Loud at night | Budget to mid | Bag snatching often reported in Bali (FCDO) |
| Sanur | Families, calm lagoons, boats to the Nusa islands | TMD Corridor 3 to Icon Mal Bali; 20 minutes by taxi from the airport | Very good: 5 km beachfront path | Quiet | Mid | Reefs are very shallow at low tide |
| Nusa Dua | Resorts, families, conferences | TMD Corridor 6 to Nusa Dua central parking | Within the resort enclave | Quiet | High | 20–30 minutes from Kuta |
| Jimbaran | Seafood dinners, calm bay, early flights | Taxi; 15 minutes from the airport | Moderate | Quiet to moderate | Mid to high | Planes take off and land within view |
| Uluwatu and the Bukit | Surf, cliffs, temple sunsets | Car or taxi; about an hour from the airport | Limited | Quiet | Budget to high | Expert-only reef breaks; temple monkeys grab belongings |
Is Ubud a good base in Bali?
Link to this answerUbud is the best base for culture: temples, dance, galleries and rice terraces are close, and the centre is walkable. It is inland, with no beach, and the tourism ministry suggests staying just outside the centre if you want quiet among the paddies, or in town to be close to the action.
The tourism ministry’s Ubud page places the town in the central part of the island and sets out a simple choice: accommodation off the centre, among rice fields, for nature, or a room in the centre to stay close to the action. It recommends early starts at the Tegallalang rice terraces, which another ministry page puts a 20-minute drive north of Ubud.
Ubud is also the one inland base with a bus. Trans Metro Dewata’s Corridor 4 runs between Ubung terminal in Denpasar and the Monkey Forest central car park, per ANTARA. The Monkey Forest itself is open from 09:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00, and evening performances at Ubud Palace cost about Rp100,000, according to the ministry’s Ubud highlights.
If you visit the Monkey Forest, follow its visitor guidelines, which ban food and drink inside the forest and ask visitors not to touch the macaques. The FCDO says rabies is present, so get medical help immediately after any bite or scratch. WARN’s guide to ethical wildlife tourism in Indonesia covers the animal attractions worth skipping (WARN is the not-for-profit our founder set up; we give it 10% of our profits).
Should you stay in Seminyak or Canggu?
Link to this answerChoose Seminyak for restaurants, boutiques and an easy walk to the beach; choose Canggu for surf, cafés and villa stays with rice paddies behind the shore. No bus corridor ends in either, Seminyak’s traffic can get very congested, and Canggu is easier with a car or hotel pickup, so check how you will get to dinner.
The tourism ministry describes Seminyak as an upmarket fashion, dining and accommodation area just north of Legian and Kuta, about 10 km from Denpasar, with a beach that is relatively quiet during the day. It warns that traffic in the west-coast conurbation can get very congested at times, and suggests exploring Seminyak itself on foot in the cooler evenings.
Canggu is a wide black-sand beach in North Kuta known for its surf, with rice paddies behind the shore; it hosted the Indonesia Surfing Championship in 2004. The ministry puts it 45 minutes by car from the airport, 20 to 25 minutes from Seminyak and about 25 minutes from Tanah Lot, and advises hiring a car or arranging a hotel pickup.
Both suit couples and groups who want to eat out every night; families wanting calm water may prefer Sanur. The FCDO reports drink spiking in Bali and methanol poisoning from drinks bought in licensed venues in tourist areas, so watch your drinks being poured and do not accept drinks from strangers.
Is Kuta or Legian a good place to stay?
Link to this answerKuta and Legian suit budget travellers, surf beginners and anyone who wants a short first night near the airport. They are walkable and busy, with shops, bars and a long beach, and three bus corridors start at Kuta central parking. Expect noise at night and take the usual precautions with bags and drinks.
The tourism ministry’s Kuta page traces the area from a 1960s village with one hotel to a holiday town of shops, restaurants and discos along the road to Legian, and says it is easy to get around on foot, by bike or by metered taxi, while parking a car is very tight. Its Bali overview adds that in the evenings the area throbs to the beat of disco music.
Kuta is the hub of the bus network. ANTARA lists three Trans Metro Dewata corridors starting at Sentral Parkir Kuta: to Terminal Pesiapan, to Politeknik Negeri Bali and to the Nusa Dua central car park (August 2026). The standard fare is Rp4,400, and the same report mentions QRIS Tap payment on the buses.
The FCDO says bag snatching is often reported in Bali, pickpocketing is a risk in busy tourist areas and police often raid venues popular with foreigners. Keep your bag concealed, carry only what you need and use registered taxi firms such as Bluebird, or check that an app driver matches the profile.
Why choose Sanur for a Bali stay?
Link to this answerSanur is a calm, walkable beach base: offshore reefs create shallow lagoons for swimming, a paved 5 km beachfront path makes it easy to walk or cycle, and fast boats leave for Nusa Penida and Lembongan. It suits families, older travellers and anyone planning island day trips.
The tourism ministry’s Sanur page says the waters are protected by a long string of offshore reefs, creating warm, shallow lagoons for swimming and snorkelling, though the reefs can be very shallow at low tide. Its paved beachfront path runs some 5 km from the Mertasari area in the south to the main beach at Jalan Hangtuah, and the page calls Sanur a great place to walk, with relatively quiet streets.
Getting in and out is simple. The ministry puts Sanur 20 minutes by taxi from Ngurah Rai airport, about 30 minutes from Kuta or Legian and 45 minutes from Seminyak or Ubud, and Trans Metro Dewata’s Corridor 3 runs from Ubung terminal to Icon Mal Bali in Sanur, per ANTARA and IDN Times.
Sanur is also a departure point for the Nusa islands. The ministry’s Nusa Penida page gives the fast-boat crossing as 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the weather, and our Nusa Penida guide covers the island’s own levy and safety. For a beachfront stay, see our Denpasar hotels page, which includes one Sanur property.
Is Nusa Dua or Jimbaran better for a resort stay?
Link to this answerChoose Nusa Dua for a self-contained resort holiday with calm, clear water and big hotel facilities; choose Jimbaran for a smaller bay, beachfront seafood dinners and the shortest airport run. Both are quieter than the west coast, and Nusa Dua has a bus link to Kuta.
The tourism ministry describes Nusa Dua as a purpose-built enclave of international luxury hotels, spas, golf courses and convention centres with clear, shallow water, about 20–30 minutes from Kuta and 15 minutes from Jimbaran on the bypass road. Trans Metro Dewata’s Corridor 6 links Kuta’s central car park with Nusa Dua’s, per ANTARA.
Jimbaran is a former fishing village on a 4 km bay protected by an unbroken coral reef, which keeps the water calmer than many Bali beaches. The ministry puts it 15 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from Legian, Seminyak and Sanur via the toll road, and notes that from the beachfront seafood restaurants you can watch planes take off and approach the airport.
Either works for a last night before an early flight, or for families who want a pool and a calm beach without much driving. If you want temples and rice terraces too, add a few nights in Ubud: the 7-day itinerary shows how to split the week between two bases.
Should you stay in Uluwatu?
Link to this answerStay in Uluwatu if surfing, cliff views and sunsets matter more than walking to dinner. The tourism ministry calls it home to the most famous waves in Bali, and the clifftop temple stages an evening Kecak dance, but places are spread out and the airport is about an hour’s drive away.
The ministry’s Uluwatu page describes several breaks that work with different swells and tides, including an outside reef that only works on big swells and temple breaks for experts only, because the water is very shallow. Check the tide and swell with a local surf school before paddling out.
Uluwatu Temple, on a cliff on the south-west coast, is the island’s second most important temple, according to the ministry, which warns that its monkeys take glasses, cameras and hair clips. The Kecak dance is performed in the evening in front of the temple entrance, timed with sunset; the ministry gives no fixed showtime, so check on the day.
Accommodation ranges from simple warung rooms to villas and starred hotels, the ministry says, but evenings mean a car or scooter ride. The FCDO reports a large increase in moped accidents in Bali and says a UK licence alone is not valid there, so budget for a driver if you do not ride. Jimbaran is a quieter compromise closer to the airport.
How do you get from Bali’s airport to each area?
Link to this answerFrom Ngurah Rai airport you can take a taxi, an app ride, a prebooked transfer or a bus. The tourism ministry puts Jimbaran 15 minutes away, Sanur 20, Canggu 45 and Uluwatu about an hour. Trans Metro Dewata’s Corridor 2 runs from the domestic arrivals stop to Ubung terminal for Rp4,400.
The drive times are the ministry’s, and its Seminyak page warns that traffic in the south can get very congested at times, so allow more on arrival day. The FCDO recommends registered taxi firms such as Bluebird, Silverbird and Express, and says app users should check that the driver matches the profile. Our getting around Bali guide explains pickups in more detail.
Buses are cheap but limited. ANTARA lists Corridor 2 between Ubung terminal and the airport’s domestic arrivals stop, and IDN Times reported it running from about 05:00 to 18:40 in April 2026. Long-haul arrivals after dark, or anyone with large bags, will find a car simpler. In mid-October 2026, fuel queues in Bali cut some bus departures, Kompas reported.
Plan the first and last nights around flights. Going by the ministry’s drive times, a late arrival is easier in Kuta, Jimbaran or Sanur than in Ubud or Uluwatu, and fast-boat days to the Nusa islands start from Sanur. If you are heading on to Lombok or the Gilis, read our fast-boat guide and the Gili Islands guide.
| Corridor | Route (ANTARA, August 2026) | Hours reported (IDN Times, April 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sentral Parkir Kuta – Terminal Pesiapan | 04:30–18:30 |
| 2 | Terminal Ubung – Ngurah Rai airport, domestic arrivals stop | 05:00–18:40 |
| 3 | Terminal Ubung – Icon Mal Bali (Sanur) | 05:00–18:30 |
| 4 | Terminal Ubung – Sentral Parkir Monkey Forest (Ubud) | 05:00–18:20 |
| 5 | Sentral Parkir Kuta – Politeknik Negeri Bali | 05:00–18:30 |
| 6 | Sentral Parkir Kuta – Sentral Parkir Nusa Dua | 05:00–18:20 |
What rules and safety checks apply wherever you stay in Bali?
Link to this answerStay in licensed accommodation, pay the Rp150,000 tourist levy, dress modestly at temples and use licensed transport: all four are in the governor’s 2025 circular for visitors. The FCDO adds warnings about bag snatching, drink spiking, methanol and moped crashes, which apply in every area.
Bali’s governor set out visitor obligations and prohibitions in Circular Letter 7 of 2025: stay at licensed accommodation, use licensed transport and guides, change money only at authorised changers, pay the levy and respect sacred sites. The Love Bali FAQ sets the levy at Rp150,000 per person, paid once and cashless.
The FCDO says rape and sexual assault are reported at high rates in Bali, reports drink spiking in Bali, Lombok and the Gilis, and warns of methanol poisoning from drinks bought in licensed venues in tourist areas. Watch drinks being poured, avoid poorly lit areas at night and arrange rides home in advance.
