When is the best time to visit Los Angeles?

Link to this answer

For most visitors, April and October to mid-November are the best times to visit Los Angeles. Downtown averages highs of 22–26°C with little rain, outside the winter wet season and the hottest weeks of August and September. Late spring brings coastal May Gray and June Gloom, and autumn brings Santa Ana fire weather to watch.

Los Angeles is warm and dry for much of the year, so the real choice is between cloud, heat, rain and fire risk. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for downtown give average highs from 19.7°C in December to 28.9°C in August, and about 362mm of rain a year, most of it from December to March (NOAA NCEI, annual normals). Discover Los Angeles counts 292 sunny or partly sunny days a year (Discover Los Angeles).

This guide uses those NOAA normals for downtown (the USC campus station) and LAX, the National Weather Service and NOAA for the marine layer and Santa Ana winds, LA County and city agencies for fire and debris-flow risk, and organisers for event dates, all checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. Where a 2027 date was not yet published, we say so.

Once you have a month, choose a base with where to stay in Los Angeles, plan a short trip with the Los Angeles 3-day itinerary or a week with the 7-day plan, and keep Los Angeles in the rain for winter swaps.

What is the weather like in Los Angeles month by month?

Downtown Los Angeles ranges from an average December high of 19.7°C to 28.9°C in August, while LAX on the coast stays cooler in summer, peaking at 24.8°C. Rain falls mainly from December to March, with February wettest at 92mm downtown, and June to September are almost completely dry. Hot days cluster from July to October.

The table converts the NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals for Los Angeles Downtown (USC campus) and Los Angeles International Airport into Celsius and millimetres (downtown, LAX). Wet days count days with at least 0.25mm (0.01in) of rain, and hot days are days at or above 32°C (90°F) downtown. These are 30-year averages, not forecasts.

The annual figures show how different the coast is. Downtown averages 25.6 days a year at 32°C or above, while LAX averages only 4.8; both get about 34 wet days a year, with LAX slightly drier at about 311mm (downtown annual, LAX). Downtown averages no nights at all at or below freezing.

How different is the weather on the coast and inland?

Link to this answer

Very different in summer. LAX’s average August high is 24.8°C, downtown’s 28.9°C and the Burbank airport station in the San Fernando Valley 31.6°C, where an average August brings 14 days at 32°C or above. Beach neighbourhoods stay cooler and cloudier; the valleys and inland suburbs get the heat.

NOAA’s normals for Burbank–Glendale–Pasadena airport give 12.0 days at or above 32°C in July, 14.2 in August and 11.3 in September, and 2.3 to 2.5 days at 38°C (100°F) or above in August and September (NOAA NCEI, Burbank). Downtown sits between the two, with 6.3 hot days in August, while LAX averages fewer than one a month in every month (LAX).

NOAA explains why: under strong high pressure, a cool marine layer can sit on the coast while “very warm, sunny conditions” begin just a mile or so inland (NOAA). That is why a summer trip can feel mild in Santa Monica and hot in Pasadena on the same afternoon.

For planning, put valley and inland sights such as Griffith Park, Pasadena or Universal City early in the day in July to September, and save the beach for the afternoon. In winter the pattern reverses less dramatically: nights are a little colder inland, but daytime highs are similar across the basin.

What are May Gray and June Gloom, and should they change your plans?

Link to this answer

They are local names for the marine layer, a low cloud deck that can cover the coast for days or weeks in late spring and early summer. Beach mornings are often grey and cool, while inland areas are sunny. It rarely spoils a trip, but beach-first travellers may prefer July to October.

NOAA describes the marine layer as cool, moist air trapped beneath a temperature inversion, particularly along the coasts of Central and Southern California, and notes that Southern Californians call it “May Gray” or “June Gloom” because it is most persistent in early summer (NOAA). A National Weather Service training page gives April to August as the main formation window, with coastal coverage most likely in May and June (NWS).

The numbers show it. LAX’s average June high is 22.2°C, while Burbank, inland, averages 26.8°C (LAX, Burbank). Rain is almost absent in both months, so the gloom is about light and warmth rather than wet days.

For a May or June trip, keep inland sights and museums for grey mornings, stay flexible about beach time, and pack a light layer for the coast. Photographers who want golden light over the ocean usually do better from late summer to autumn.

How wet is a Los Angeles winter, and what are the risks?

Link to this answer

Mild and only occasionally wet: downtown averages 63–92mm a month from December to February over five or six wet days, with highs near 20°C. The risk comes from intense storms, which can trigger flooding and debris flows below recent burn scars. LA County counts its rainy season from 15 October to 15 April.

NOAA’s normals give downtown 63mm in December, 84mm in January and 92mm in February, with 5.5 to 6.3 wet days a month (NOAA NCEI). Single seasons vary a lot: September 2026 brought 0.75in (19mm) of rain downtown against a normal of 0.13in (NWS).

LA County Public Works says debris flows depend on rainfall intensity and duration, can be highly destructive, and remain a risk for years after a fire: vegetation takes about four to five years to recover significantly. It defines the rainy season as 15 October to 15 April and publishes debris-flow forecasts and road closures (LA County Public Works). The UK government also warns of mudslides in burn areas (FCDO).

For visitors, winter is a good-value time for museums, food and the theme parks, with indoor swaps on rainy days. Avoid hiking or driving canyon roads in or below burn areas during heavy rain, and check road closures before heading to Malibu or the mountains.

When are Santa Ana winds, wildfire risk and smog worst?

Link to this answer

Santa Ana winds are most common from September to May, and they bring hot, dry air that raises wildfire risk from autumn. LA County Fire says fire season is now year-round. Ozone smog peaks from May to September. Check red flag warnings, fire alerts and AQMD air-quality forecasts during your trip.

The National Weather Service says Santa Ana winds occur most often during the cooler months, from September through May, typically feel warm or even hot, and increase wildfire risk because of their dryness (NWS). LA County Fire says climate change has made fire season year-round and urges residents and visitors to follow evacuation orders (LA County Fire).

This October showed the pattern. On 16 October 2026 the NWS Los Angeles office forecast moderate to strong Santa Ana winds, low humidity and hot temperatures for LA and Ventura counties (NWS Los Angeles); the LAFD had activated red flag parking restrictions, which apply when winds reach 25mph and humidity falls to 15% or lower (LAFD); and the City of Malibu listed the Bryson Fire with evacuation warnings in western Malibu (City of Malibu).

South Coast AQMD says summer ozone season starts in May and officially ends on 30 September, though high ozone can continue into autumn (AQMD); its daily forecast shows the cleanest time of day (AQMD forecast). Earthquakes are possible at any time: the Earthquake Country Alliance advises “drop, cover and hold on”, and at the coast to walk quickly to high ground after strong shaking (Earthquake Country Alliance).

Which Los Angeles events in 2026–27 affect crowds and prices?

Still to come in 2026 are Día de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever (24 October), the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval (31 October), the LA Auto Show (20–29 November) and the Hollywood Christmas Parade (29 November). In 2027 the Rose Parade falls on 1 January, the Grammys on 7 February and the Oscars on 14 March.

Events concentrate crowds in particular districts. Pasadena fills for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, Hollywood for the Oscars and the Christmas Parade, downtown for the Grammys, the Auto Show and the Golden Dragon Parade, and the desert for Coachella. If your dates are flexible, compare hotel prices for the event week with the weeks either side.

Dates come from the organisers: the Tournament of Roses and Rose Bowl Game, the LA Marathon, the Academy, the Recording Academy, Goldenvoice for Coachella and Stagecoach, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, Hollywood Forever’s Día de los Muertos, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the LA Auto Show, Visit West Hollywood, the LA County Fair and LA28. LA Pride had not announced 2027 dates; its 2026 parade was on 14 June in Hollywood (LA Pride).

How do US holidays, whale season and hotel taxes affect timing?

Link to this answer

US holiday weekends push up demand: Thanksgiving is 26 November 2026, and in 2027 Memorial Day falls on 31 May, Independence Day is observed on 5 July and Labor Day is 6 September. Grey whales pass from December to May. City of Los Angeles hotels charge a 14% occupancy tax, so compare totals.

The Office of Personnel Management lists Christmas Day 2026 on a Friday, New Year’s Day 2027 on a Friday, Martin Luther King Jr Day on 18 January, Washington’s Birthday on 15 February, Memorial Day on 31 May, Independence Day observed on Monday 5 July and Labor Day on 6 September 2027. Avoid long weekends if you want quieter beaches and theme parks.

NOAA Fisheries says eastern North Pacific grey whales move south from November to mid-February and then head north, a journey that continues through May (NOAA Fisheries). Discover Los Angeles lists whale watching from Point Dume from January to March (Discover Los Angeles), where California State Parks says the beach remains accessible but the lower car park is not (California State Parks) and year-round whale-watching cruises from Long Beach and San Pedro (Discover Los Angeles).

Discover Los Angeles says rooms in the City of Los Angeles are subject to a 14% transient occupancy tax (Discover Los Angeles). In June 2026, voters rejected Measure TT, which would have raised the rate to 16%, and approved Measure TC, which applies the tax to the full amount charged by online travel companies once it takes effect (NBC Los Angeles, 12 June 2026).

Which month suits which kind of Los Angeles trip?

Link to this answer

Beach-first travellers should aim for July to October, after the June Gloom. Sightseers and museum-goers do well in April, October and November. Winter suits budget-minded city breaks and whale watching, with indoor swaps for rain. Families on summer holidays should plan inland days early and beaches late.

Hikers should avoid the hottest inland weeks of August and September and watch fire-weather alerts in autumn; during the October 2026 red flag warning, Malibu closed Topanga Canyon Road between Mulholland Drive and the coast (City of Malibu). Award-season fans can time a trip for Oscars week in March, booking Hollywood hotels early.

Desert day-trippers should treat summer with caution: the NPS warns that extreme heat is a very serious safety risk at Joshua Tree in summer (NPS). Spring and autumn are better for the 7-day itinerary’s desert option.

  • Warm, dry and clear: late September to October (watch Santa Ana alerts)
  • Mild, dry and green: April
  • Coastal cloud: May and June
  • Hottest inland: August and September
  • Wettest: December to March, with February wettest downtown
  • Whales: December to May, best from January to March

So when should you go to Los Angeles?

Link to this answer

Go in April or from October to mid-November if you can choose freely: dry, warm and outside the summer peak. Choose July to September for reliable beach weather and accept inland heat, December to March for lower-key city breaks with some rain, and keep fire and air-quality alerts in mind whenever you travel.

The biggest mistake is to assume one climate for the whole city. In June, LAX averages a high of 22.2°C while Burbank, inland, averages 26.8°C, and an October week can switch from perfect to fire-weather alerts when Santa Ana winds blow. Pack layers, check forecasts by neighbourhood and keep bookings refundable.

Next steps: choose a base with where to stay in Los Angeles, plan the airport leg with LAX to Los Angeles, and compare fares with cheap flights from Los Angeles. The Los Angeles destination hub and Los Angeles hotels collect the rest.
