Where should you stay in Los Angeles?
Link to this answerFor a first visit without a car, stay downtown or in Hollywood near a B Line station. Choose Santa Monica for the beach and an E Line link to downtown, Koreatown for value and late-night food on the D Line, and West Hollywood for nightlife if you will use ride-hail. Pasadena suits a quieter base.
Los Angeles is a region of separate cities and neighbourhoods, and the right base depends on how you will move. Without a car, stay close to a Metro rail station on the corridor you will use most: the B Line for downtown, Hollywood and Universal City, the D Line for Koreatown and Museum Row, and the E Line for Santa Monica. With a car, parking costs and traffic matter more than stations.
We compared eight bases using LA Metro timetables, LAX transit information, city tax pages, venue pages and NOAA climate normals, all checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. We have not stayed in or inspected any hotel for this page. For property shortlists with dated guest scores, see Los Angeles hotels.
Match the base to your plan with the Los Angeles 3-day itinerary or the 7-day itinerary, and to the season with best time to visit Los Angeles: a beach base feels different under May and June’s coastal cloud than in September.
How do the best areas to stay in Los Angeles compare?
Link to this answerThe table compares eight bases on their nearest Metro stations, how they walk, how loud they get after dark and what to watch for. Price feel is relative within Los Angeles, not a quote. Rail access matters most if you will not drive, because distances between areas are long and most sightseeing involves crossing the basin.
Stations come from LA Metro’s own timetables for the B and D Lines, the E Line, the A Line and the K Line, and line termini from its schedules page. Journey times quoted on this page are approximate, read from those timetables.
Noise and walkability ratings are general guidance only. A courtyard room on a lively street can be quieter than a front room on a side street, so read recent reviews for the exact building, and check the walk from the door to the station on a map before you pay.
| Area | Best for | Nearest Metro or transit | Walkability | Noise and nightlife | Price feel | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown | First visit by Metro, museums, arena events | Union Station, Civic Center/Grand Park, Pershing Square, 7th St/Metro Center (B, D); Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill, Historic Broadway, Little Tokyo/Arts District (A, E); FlyAway to Union Station | Good in the core, patchy between districts | Busy around arena and convention events | Mid to high | Quiet blocks after dark; check the exact street |
| Hollywood | Walk of Fame, Griffith Park, nightlife | Hollywood/Highland, Hollywood/Vine, Hollywood/Western (B) | Good along the boulevard | Loud late on Hollywood Boulevard | Mid | Oscars and parade crowds |
| West Hollywood | Restaurants, bars, Santa Monica Boulevard | No Metro rail station; buses and ride-hail | Good on the main boulevards | Lively late | Mid to high | Ride-hail costs add up; Halloween Carnaval crowds |
| Koreatown and Mid-Wilshire | Value, food, Museum Row | Wilshire/Vermont, Wilshire/Normandie, Wilshire/Western, Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax, Wilshire/La Cienega (D) | Good along Wilshire Boulevard | Late-night clubs and 24-hour restaurants | Lower to mid | Wilshire/Fairfax closed 23 Oct–1 Nov 2026 |
| Santa Monica | Beach, families, walkable base | Downtown Santa Monica, 17th St/SMC, 26th St/Bergamot (E); Big Blue Bus 3 to LAX | Very good near the pier | Moderate; busy pier weekends | High | 15% hotel tax plus a nightly assessment; about 45 minutes to downtown by E Line |
| Venice | Boardwalk, canals, Abbot Kinney | No rail station; bus or ride-hail | Good near the canals and boardwalk | Busy boardwalk by day | Mid to high | Residential walk streets; long trips to Hollywood |
| Pasadena | Quieter base, Rose Parade, Old Pasadena | Del Mar, Memorial Park, Lake, Allen, Sierra Madre Villa (A) | Good in Old Pasadena | Quiet | Mid | Rose Parade demand around 1 January; hotter inland summers |
| LAX area | Late arrivals, early flights, stopovers | LAX/Metro Transit Center (C, K); LAX-it for taxis and ride-hail | Low | Road and airport traffic | Lower to mid | Little to see nearby |
Is downtown Los Angeles a good base for a first visit?
Link to this answerYes, if you will use Metro. Union Station is the FlyAway terminus and serves the A, B and D Lines, while 7th Street/Metro Center adds the E Line to Santa Monica. The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Little Tokyo and Angels Flight are walkable. The trade-off is uneven streets after dark, so choose the block carefully.
Three downtown stations, Grand Av Arts/Bunker Hill, Historic Broadway and Little Tokyo/Arts District, arrived with the Regional Connector in June 2023 (LA Metro), and The Broad names Grand Avenue Arts/Bunker Hill on the A and E Lines as its nearest stop (The Broad). Angels Flight climbs Bunker Hill from Hill Street, opposite Grand Central Market, from 6:45am to 10pm for $1.50, so a hotel in the core puts several sights on foot.
Downtown is also the hub for the rest of the city. Hollywood/Highland is about 25 minutes from Union Station on the B Line, Wilshire/Fairfax about 20 minutes on the D Line (B and D Line timetable), and Memorial Park in Pasadena about 25 minutes on the A Line (A Line timetable). FlyAway buses from LAX end at Union Station (LAWA).
Events concentrate crowds around the arena and convention centre: the LA Auto Show runs from 20 to 29 November 2026 at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LA Auto Show) and the Grammys are on 7 February 2027 (Recording Academy). Some downtown streets are quiet after office hours, so read recent reviews about the exact block and use ride-hail late at night if the walk feels unfamiliar.
Should you stay in Hollywood or West Hollywood?
Link to this answerStay in Hollywood for the Walk of Fame, Griffith Park and a direct B Line ride to downtown or Universal City. Choose West Hollywood for restaurants and nightlife along Santa Monica Boulevard, accepting that it has no Metro rail station, so most trips mean a bus or a ride-hail. Both are noisy at weekends.
The B Line stops at Hollywood/Highland, Hollywood/Vine and Hollywood/Western, and Universal/Studio City is the next stop north (B and D Line timetable). The Walk of Fame follows Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street (Discover Los Angeles), and the Hollywood Sign Trust names Ovation at Hollywood and Highland as a viewpoint for the sign (Hollywood Sign Trust).
Hollywood fills for big nights: the Hollywood Christmas Parade is on 29 November 2026 (Hollywood Christmas Parade) and the Oscars on 14 March 2027 (Academy). Expect street closures and higher rates around those dates, and choose a room away from the boulevard if you sleep lightly.
West Hollywood is a separate city with no station on the Metro rail timetables, so you will rely on buses or ride-hail. Its biggest street party, the Halloween Carnaval, takes over Santa Monica Boulevard from 6pm to 11pm on 31 October 2026 (Visit West Hollywood). We could not confirm the city’s current hotel-tax rate from an official page, so check the total on your booking.
Why consider Koreatown or Mid-Wilshire near Museum Row?
Link to this answerKoreatown is the value pick on the D Line, with Wilshire/Vermont, Wilshire/Normandie and Wilshire/Western stations and a famously late food scene. Mid-Wilshire, around Wilshire/La Brea and Wilshire/Fairfax, puts LACMA and the Academy Museum on your doorstep now that the D Line extension has opened. Neither is near the beach.
Discover Los Angeles places Koreatown west of downtown and south of Hollywood and says it has one of the largest concentrations of nightclubs and 24-hour businesses in the country (Discover Los Angeles). That makes late dinners easy and some streets loud; ask for a high floor or a room at the back.
Since 8 May 2026 the subway has continued west from Wilshire/Western to new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega, while work goes on beneath Beverly Hills, Century City and Westwood for later sections (LA Metro). LACMA says the D Line brings you directly to it at Wilshire/Fairfax (LACMA), but the Academy Museum warns that the station is closed from 23 October to 1 November 2026 (Academy Museum).
Museum Row has one gap: the museum at La Brea Tar Pits is closed for construction, though outdoor areas of Hancock Park remain open (La Brea Tar Pits). From Wilshire/Fairfax, 7th Street/Metro Center is about 13 minutes away (B and D Line timetable), so downtown evenings are easy.
Is Santa Monica or Venice the better beach base?
Link to this answerChoose Santa Monica for an easy, walkable beach base with three E Line stations and a direct bus to LAX. Choose Venice for the boardwalk, the canals and Abbot Kinney Boulevard, accepting that it has no rail station. Both are a long way from Hollywood and Griffith, so plan those days as full outings.
The E Line’s western stations are Downtown Santa Monica, 17th St/SMC and 26th St/Bergamot, and the ride from Downtown Santa Monica to 7th Street/Metro Center takes about 45 minutes (E Line timetable). Big Blue Bus Line 3 runs every 15 minutes and Rapid 3 every 20 to 30 minutes to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, for $1.10 with TAP or $1.25 in cash (LAWA). Santa Monica Pier is at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue (Santa Monica Pier).
Venice trades convenience for character. Discover Los Angeles describes the canals, restored and reopened in 1993, Abbot Kinney Boulevard a few blocks from the beach, and a free skatepark open from 9am to sunset (Discover Los Angeles). Many streets near the canals are residential, so a short-term rental there means living among neighbours rather than in a hotel district.
Both sit under the coastal marine layer in late spring. June’s average high is 22.2°C at LAX against 26.8°C at inland Burbank (LAX, Burbank), and NOAA notes that the cloud lingers longest in early summer (NOAA). Beach-first travellers who want sun should aim for July to October.
When do Pasadena or an airport hotel make sense?
Link to this answerPasadena suits travellers who want a calmer base with Old Pasadena’s streets and an A Line ride of about 25 minutes to Union Station, though it fills around the Rose Parade on 1 January. An LAX-area hotel makes sense only for a late arrival, an early flight or a one-night stopover.
The A Line serves Pasadena at Del Mar, Memorial Park, Lake, Allen and Sierra Madre Villa (A Line timetable), and has run from Pomona North to Long Beach since its extension opened on 30 September 2025 (LA Metro). The Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game fall on 1 January 2027, with Pasadena events from 28 December (Tournament of Roses), so book early or avoid those dates.
Inland summers are hotter. NOAA’s normals for Burbank, the nearest inland airport station, give an August average high of 31.6°C, against 28.9°C downtown (Burbank, downtown). A Pasadena base suits spring, autumn and winter trips better than August ones if you dislike heat.
Near LAX, the C Line runs from the LAX/Metro Transit Center to Norwalk and the K Line to Expo/Crenshaw and Redondo Beach (LA Metro); the transit centre opened on 6 June 2025 (LA Metro). Taxis and ride-hail pick up at the LAX-it lot (LAWA). For terminal waits, see our LAX lounge guide.
How do you get from LAX to each area?
Link to this answerFlyAway to Union Station is the simplest link for downtown, Hollywood and Pasadena, with Metro onward. For Santa Monica, take Big Blue Bus Line 3 from the LAX/Metro Transit Center. For West Hollywood, Venice or late arrivals, a taxi or ride-hail from the LAX-it lot is usually easier than changing buses with luggage.
FlyAway costs $12.75, runs seven days a week between every terminal and Union Station or Van Nuys, and takes only contactless Visa or Mastercard or its app (LAWA). The free Metro Connector shuttle links the terminals with the LAX/Metro Transit Center, where Big Blue Bus, Culver CityBus and Beach Cities Transit also stop. Metro caps fares at $5 a day once you tap a card (LA Metro).
LAX’s new people mover had not started passenger service by mid-October 2026, and Spectrum News reported a target of early January (Spectrum News, 24 September 2026). Until it opens, allow time for the shuttle. Our LAX to Los Angeles transfer guide compares the bus with booked cars.
| Area | Public transport from LAX | Changes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Downtown | FlyAway to Union Station | None to Union Station | $12.75; no cash |
| Hollywood | FlyAway, then B Line | One | Hollywood/Highland about 25 minutes from Union Station |
| West Hollywood | Taxi or ride-hail from LAX-it | None | No Metro rail station |
| Koreatown and Mid-Wilshire | FlyAway, then D Line | One | Wilshire/Fairfax closed 23 Oct–1 Nov 2026 |
| Santa Monica | Shuttle to LAX/Metro Transit Center, then Big Blue Bus 3 or Rapid 3 | One | $1.10 with TAP |
| Venice | Taxi or ride-hail from LAX-it | None | No rail station |
| Pasadena | FlyAway, then A Line | One | Memorial Park about 25 minutes from Union Station |
| LAX area | Free Metro Connector shuttle, taxi or hotel arrangements | None | People mover not yet in service |
Is it safe to stay in Los Angeles, and which risks affect your choice?
Link to this answerThe FCDO does not advise against travel to the USA. It says violent and gun crime rarely affect tourists but urges care in unfamiliar areas, lists California among higher-risk earthquake areas and warns about wildfires. Choose a well-reviewed block, keep valuables out of parked cars and check fire alerts before booking coastal or hillside stays.
The FCDO advises avoiding quieter areas alone at night, not leaving passports in rental cars, especially in the boot, and not leaving items on display, because gangs may target vehicles driven by people who look like tourists. It also notes that protests are common and can become violent, and asks travellers to follow local authorities’ instructions (FCDO).
Fire risk shapes where and when to stay. According to the National Weather Service, the dry Santa Ana winds that feed wildfires peak between September and May (NWS), LA County Fire calls fire season year-round (LA County Fire), and in mid-October 2026 the City of Malibu was posting evacuation warnings for the Bryson Fire (City of Malibu). Keep bookings refundable in autumn and check alerts before you travel.
If the ground shakes, the Earthquake Country Alliance’s advice is to drop, cover and hold on, then head promptly for higher ground if you are by the sea (Earthquake Country Alliance). South Coast AQMD’s daily forecast is worth checking on smoky or hot days (AQMD).
What should you check before booking a Los Angeles hotel?
Link to this answerCompare totals, not nightly rates. The City of Los Angeles charges a 14% occupancy tax, and Santa Monica charges 15% on hotels and 17% on home-shares plus a nightly tourism assessment. Check parking and resort fees, the walk to the nearest station, and keep free cancellation until your flights are ticketed.
Hotel bills in the City of Los Angeles include a 14% transient occupancy tax (Discover Los Angeles), and Measure TC, approved by voters in June 2026, will extend it to the whole price charged by online travel companies when it comes into force (NBC Los Angeles, 12 June 2026). Santa Monica has charged 15% on hotel and motel rooms and 17% on home-shares since 1 March 2023, and for 2026 adds a tourism assessment of $2.30 to $7.25 per room night depending on the average daily rate (City of Santa Monica).
Santa Monica voters decide Measure TT on 3 November 2026. It would keep those rates but let the council lower the hotel rate for corporate stays during designated major event periods, such as the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (City of Santa Monica). The Games run from 14 to 30 July 2028 (LA28), so book very early for those dates.
