Desk-researched suggested itinerary, checked 16–17 October 2026; not a personally tested route. Museum days, Metro service and fire or weather closures change, so confirm each stop for your dates.

A Los Angeles 3-day itinerary by Metro: The Broad and Griffith at sunset, Hollywood and Museum Row, then Venice and Santa Monica, with closed days.

Key takeaways

How should you spend 3 days in Los Angeles?

Link to this answer

Spend day 1 downtown at The Broad and Walt Disney Concert Hall, then ride up to Griffith Observatory for sunset. Give day 2 to Hollywood Boulevard and Museum Row on the B and D Lines. Use day 3 for the Venice Canals, the boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier. Avoid starting on a Monday.

Three days in Los Angeles works only if you accept that you will see one slice of a huge region. This plan follows a single corridor, from downtown through Hollywood and Mid-Wilshire to the coast, so each day can be done on Metro with the odd ride-hail. It picks one big museum a day rather than three, and leaves Catalina, Pasadena and the theme parks for a longer stay.

It is a desk-researched suggested route, not one we have walked end to end. Opening days come from each venue’s own page, fares from LA Metro and LAX, and weather from NOAA and the National Weather Service, checked on 16 and 17 October 2026. Where a page would not load for us, such as Grand Central Market’s hours and the Getty’s transit directions, we have left the detail out rather than guess.

For a slower week with a Catalina day, Pasadena and more museum time, use the Los Angeles 7-day itinerary. To choose a base on this corridor, read where to stay in Los Angeles: downtown or Hollywood near a B Line station keeps all three days simple.

What does the 3-day Los Angeles plan look like at a glance?

Day 1 is downtown on foot and Griffith Observatory after dark. Day 2 is Hollywood in the morning and LACMA or the Academy Museum in the afternoon. Day 3 is the coast from Venice to Santa Monica. Each day has one timed booking at most, and the table shows the closures that decide your order.

A Thursday start fits best. The Broad stays open until 8pm on Thursdays, LACMA until 8pm on Fridays, and a Saturday on the coast leaves weekday rush hours behind. Friday to Sunday also works. A trip that starts on a Monday needs reordering, because The Broad and Griffith Observatory both close that day (The Broad, Griffith Observatory).

Day 3 depends most on the weather, so swap it with day 2 if the coast forecast is grey or wet. Days 1 and 2 have indoor anchors and survive rain, heat or the late-spring marine layer. If you land in the evening, keep day 1’s observatory visit and move The Broad to day 2’s morning instead of Hollywood.

How do you get from LAX and around Los Angeles for three days?

Link to this answer

For downtown or Hollywood, ride the $12.75 FlyAway bus to Union Station; for the coast, use the free airport shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center and the K Line. On Metro, a tapped bank card pays $1.75 a ride, covers two hours of transfers and stops charging after $5 in a day. Ride-hail late at night.

LAX says FlyAway runs between every terminal and Union Station or Van Nuys, seven days a week, for $12.75; you pay with a contactless Visa or Mastercard or the FlyAway app, and cash is not accepted on any route (LAWA). The Metro Connector shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center is free with proof of transit, and from there the K Line reaches Expo/Crenshaw for the E Line in about 18 minutes (LAWA, K Line timetable). LAX’s automated train to the terminals had still not opened to passengers when we checked (Spectrum News, 24 September 2026).

Each Metro trip costs $1.75 and a tap covers onward transfers for two hours, though not a return journey; the fourth and later rides in a day are free, and weekly spending stops at $18. Tap a credit or debit card or a phone wallet; cash works only on buses and does not count towards the caps (LA Metro).

You need three lines. The B Line runs from Union Station through Pershing Square and Vermont/Sunset to Hollywood/Highland and North Hollywood; the D Line shares its stations as far as Wilshire/Vermont, then runs west to Wilshire/La Cienega (B and D Line timetable). The E Line links downtown with Downtown Santa Monica in about 45 minutes (E Line timetable). For taxis and ride-hailing at the airport, LAWA sends passengers to the LAX-it lot (LAWA).

Day 1: how do you combine downtown with Griffith Observatory at sunset?

Link to this answer

Ride Angels Flight up Bunker Hill, then spend late morning at The Broad, which is free with a timed ticket. After lunch, take Walt Disney Concert Hall’s free self-guided audio tour. In the late afternoon, ride the B Line to Vermont/Sunset and the DASH shuttle up to Griffith Observatory for sunset and city lights.

Angels Flight runs every day from 6:45am to 10pm and costs $1.50 each way, or $0.75 one way with stored value on a TAP card. Its lower entrance is at 351 S Hill Street, across from Grand Central Market, and the top station is at California Plaza on Grand Avenue. The market’s own site blocked our check, so confirm its hours before planning breakfast there.

General admission to The Broad is free. Doors open at 11am from Tuesday to Friday, closing at 5pm except on Thursday, when it stays open until 8pm, and at 10am at weekends, closing at 6pm; the museum shuts on Mondays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. It recommends reserving a timed ticket, releases extra same-day tickets online, and requires advance reservations for the Infinity Mirrored Room. Across Grand Avenue, the LA Phil says free self-guided audio tours of Walt Disney Concert Hall run most days, last about an hour and start in the Grand Avenue Lobby (LA Phil).

Admission to Griffith Observatory is free; it shuts on Mondays, opens at noon from Tuesday to Friday and at 10am at weekends, and stays open until 10pm on every open day. Its directions page lists a DASH shuttle from Vermont/Sunset station every 20 to 25 minutes, daily from 10am to 10pm (Griffith Observatory). The Hollywood Sign Trust names the observatory as one of the two best places to see the sign (Hollywood Sign Trust); our Griffith Observatory guide covers timing.

Day 2: how do you pair Hollywood with Museum Row?

Link to this answer

Start at Hollywood/Highland for the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign view from Ovation Hollywood before the crowds build. Around midday, ride the B Line to Wilshire/Vermont and change to the D Line for Wilshire/Fairfax. Spend the afternoon at LACMA or the Academy Museum, and walk past the La Brea Tar Pits.

Stars run along both pavements of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street (Discover Los Angeles), and the Hollywood Sign Trust lists Ovation at Hollywood and Highland as its other recommended viewpoint (Hollywood Sign Trust), so you do not need a tour for a photo; see is a Hollywood Sign tour worth it?. The D Line’s Wilshire/Fairfax station opened on 8 May 2026 (LA Metro), but the Academy Museum warns that it is closed from 23 October to 1 November 2026, so use a bus or ride-hail on those dates (Academy Museum).

Wednesday is LACMA’s closed day; otherwise it opens at 11am on weekdays, closing at 6pm or at 8pm on Fridays, and runs from 10am to 7pm at weekends. It highly recommends timed tickets bought in advance, charges adults $30 and lets everyone in free on the second Tuesday of the month (LACMA tickets). The Academy Museum keeps 10am-to-6pm hours on every day but Tuesday, charges $25 for adults and admits under-18s free. It also listed its East Rolex Gallery as closed from 19 October to 12 December 2026.

The tar pits are best treated as a free walk between the two. The museum at La Brea Tar Pits is temporarily closed for what it calls a two-year transformation, but many outdoor areas of Hancock Park and select excavation sites remain accessible, and Insider Tours run during construction (La Brea Tar Pits).

Day 3: how do you spend a last day on the coast from Venice to Santa Monica?

Link to this answer

Begin at the Venice Canals while the streets are quiet, then walk to Abbot Kinney Boulevard for coffee and shops. Spend midday on Ocean Front Walk and at the free skatepark, then walk or cycle the beach path north to Santa Monica Pier for sunset. Ride the E Line back downtown afterwards.

Discover Los Angeles says Abbot Kinney built the canals in 1905, most were filled in 1929, and the survivors reopened in 1993 after restoration; you can walk them within the area bounded by South Venice Boulevard, Pacific Avenue, Ocean Avenue and Washington Boulevard (Discover Los Angeles). Abbot Kinney Boulevard, a few blocks from the beach, is lined with shops, galleries and restaurants. These are residential streets, so keep voices down and stay off private docks.

On the beachfront, the Venice Beach Skatepark is free to use from 9am to sunset, and Muscle Beach’s outdoor weights sit at the south end of the Venice Beach Recreation Center (Discover Los Angeles). The pier meets the city where Ocean Avenue crosses Colorado Avenue (Santa Monica Pier), and its Pacific Park funfair is free to enter, though ride times differ from one day to the next (Pacific Park); our Santa Monica Pier guide helps you decide how long to stay.

Downtown Santa Monica is the E Line’s western terminus, about 45 minutes from 7th Street/Metro Center (E Line timetable). If you fly home from the coast, Big Blue Bus Line 3 and Rapid 3 run to the LAX/Metro Transit Center for $1.10 with TAP (LAWA).

The Broad, LACMA, the Academy Museum or the Getty: which should you choose?

Link to this answer

Choose The Broad for contemporary art at no charge, LACMA for a wide-ranging collection on Museum Row, and the Academy Museum for film history. Choose the Getty Center, free with a timed reservation but with $25 parking, if you have a car and would trade day 3’s Venice morning for gardens and hilltop views.

Closed on Mondays, the Getty Center opens at 10am on other days and closes at 6:30pm, or 9pm on Saturdays, with free admission for anyone holding a timed-entry reservation; parking costs $25 per car, falling later in the day. We could not load its transit directions, so plan a car or ride-hail. Swapping it in turns day 3 into the Getty-and-Santa-Monica pairing that the 7-day plan uses, which suits art lovers more than beach walkers.

Cost and closures decide the rest. The Broad is free and closed on Mondays; LACMA costs $30 for adults and closes on Wednesdays; the Academy Museum costs $25 and closes on Tuesdays; the Getty is free but closed on Mondays. Three days rarely fit more than two of these well, so choose by interest rather than ticking off names.

Families may prefer the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, on the E Line, which opens daily from 9:30am to 5pm except on the first Tuesday of each month and some holidays (Natural History Museum). Read Los Angeles with kids for pacing ideas.

How should heat, rain, June Gloom and fire weather change the plan?

Link to this answer

Swap days when the forecast demands it. Downtown averages 28.9°C highs in August, so visit Griffith in the evening; February is the wettest month, so keep day 3 flexible. May and June often bring a grey coastal morning. From autumn, check Santa Ana fire-weather alerts before any beach or canyon plans.

In August, NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals put the average high at 31.6°C in inland Burbank, 28.9°C downtown and 24.8°C at coastal LAX, while February brings downtown its heaviest rain, 92mm on average (NOAA NCEI, downtown, LAX, Burbank). NOAA explains that the cool marine layer Southern Californians call May Gray or June Gloom is most persistent in early summer (NOAA), which is why the plan puts the beach last in the day.

Santa Ana winds, which the National Weather Service says blow mostly between September and May, dry the air and push up wildfire risk (NWS), and LA County Fire treats fire season as year-round (LA County Fire). Malibu’s alert page showed evacuation warnings for the Bryson Fire in the west of the city on 16 October 2026 (City of Malibu), and South Coast AQMD publishes daily air-quality forecasts (AQMD).

The FCDO does not advise against travel to the USA (FCDO). It says violent and gun crime rarely affect tourists but advises care in unfamiliar areas, warns against leaving passports or items on display in rental cars, and lists California among higher-risk earthquake areas (FCDO); the Earthquake Country Alliance advises “drop, cover and hold on” (Earthquake Country Alliance). For wet days, see Los Angeles in the rain.

What could you add with a fourth day, and which tours fit three days?

Link to this answer

With a fourth day, add Universal Studios Hollywood on the B Line or a Pasadena afternoon on the A Line. On a three-day trip, one booked product is plenty: a Hollywood or food walking tour on day 2, or bike hire on day 3. Keep tickets refundable while fire and weather alerts are possible.

Universal/Studio City is the B Line stop after Hollywood/Highland, a few minutes further on (B and D Line timetable); our Universal Studios Hollywood guide helps you decide whether it earns a full day. For Pasadena, the A Line reaches Memorial Park about 25 minutes after leaving Union Station (A Line timetable), and the line now runs from Pomona North to Long Beach (LA Metro).

Short on time? Los Angeles in one day picks a single corridor, and the 7-day itinerary adds Catalina and slower museum days. Check the month first in best time to visit Los Angeles, and entry rules in ESTA for UK travellers.

For tours, compare what is included, the meeting point and how late you can cancel if a fire or storm closes roads. GetYourGuide vs Viator vs Klook explains how refunds differ, and the Los Angeles destination hub collects the rest of our coverage.
